I'm genuinely so upset about the potential foreshadowing of Usopp dying. Like, it's just... it feels like such a lame way to complete an arc? Especially when he's barely given focus lately? No matter how meaningful/emotional the sacrifice might be, the idea of him not getting to see his friends all achieve their dreams, to Not see Luffy become King of the Pirates??? And for what? Why can't a brave warrior of the sea survive and be the one to spin his own tales? Ugh, I'm sorry, I'm just... getting emotional after watching that OPLA clip with Usopp and Broggy...

It upsets me too. That theory has popped up here and there in passing for years, but lately it feels like people are treating it like the only possible way Elbaf could end. 🙄 I’ve been having to process a lot of that lately. The more I sit with it the more it feels like premature resignation mixed with people grasping at straws that were never really there to begin with.

It reminds me of that quote that kept coming up during Chopper’s arc: when people lose hope, they give in to fear. That’s honestly what this wave of takes feels like. It’s basically people saying they can’t handle the possibility of Usopp being sidelined again or called useless, words I don’t even like using but that’s what I’ve been seeing everywhere. So instead they jump straight to the meme route, the “Oda never said Elbaf was his arc” route, or the “Usopp is going to die so Luffy can grow and the crew can train” route. Like… what? 💀

Break week had me feeling bitter about all of it, not gonna lie. What actually helped pull me out of that funk was reading a manga and watching the anime adaptation about a protagonist who is constantly called weak, lame, and a scaredy cat compared to everyone else. I ended up loving it so much that it actually made me appreciate Usopp even more.

Someone on Facebook replied to one of my comments where I said killing Usopp would be lazy and cheap writing, for the same reasons you mentioned. His story is still incomplete. Oda hasn’t confirmed his lies. He hasn’t given him another big Observation Haki showcase. He hasn’t even met his father yet. The person kept insisting none of that mattered. According to them, Usopp dying while incomplete would be perfect because it would give Luffy character growth, and then Usopp could reincarnate as some sniper god or whatever.

And I’m just sitting there thinking… have we forgotten how averse Oda is to killing characters in the first place? Then they brought Ace into it, saying Ace was incomplete too but his death gave Luffy growth. And I’m like, so Luffy is the only one who matters in this equation? You can absolutely have huge moments of growth, defeat, and pain without it needing to revolve around a death. Usopp doesn’t have to die for his dream to matter. Why can’t he just live and reach it with the crew?

At this point it just feels like fear mongering that drains morale. I’ve even seen people claiming Sanji is going to die because Toei barely showed him in the newest anime opening. That’s the level of doomposting floating around right now.

Trying to predict anything this early also feels pointless, especially now that a certain Marijois figure has finally entered the story in the latest chapter. People are acting like Elbaf is already winding down, but is it really? Usopp is under more scrutiny than ever because of that anxiety.

But killing him would be such a harsh move for so many reasons. It would send a terrible message and honestly feel like a slap in the face to the fans who stuck with his story. Oda almost never spells things out directly with Usopp. Imagine the one time he finally does it being right at Usopp’s death. That would be brutal.

It reminds me of the pattern in The Walking Dead where you could practically tell a character was about to die the moment they started getting all the cool and dramatic moments fans had been waiting years to see. That kind of storytelling would do nothing for Usopp’s already fragile legacy.

Usopp has every right to be there at the end with his friends. When you look back at Little Garden, the foreshadowing around him is hopeful, not fatalistic. Sure, a death would create shock value, but what would that actually accomplish besides leaving a massive loose end in a story that has otherwise been so carefully built?

And if that happened, even the biggest Oda defenders would have to admit that leaving something like that unresolved would mean the story wasn’t as tight as people say it is.

Ngl I feel like anything beyond the usual annoyance at how much this fandom mistreats Ussop is not only giving this whole thing way too much energy but also falling for it in a way.

I mean, obviously the guy who thinks of his story as entertainment first and foremost and wants all the arcs to end in a party isn't going to kill a main character there isn't even a debate. "Ussop will die" theories are the "all the characters of this kids cartoon died horrible deaths and are in purgatory" of the one piece community. Edgy and unworthy of any genuine involvement. Ussop as a character disrupts these people's preferred narratives so they want him gone but that's just that, there is no actual reflection or analysis in these claims, they just plain don't like him, which is not Oda's case, at worst Oda doesn't know how to exploit the abilities he gave him and struggles to juggle with how attainable his goal is and the fact that he can't officially reach it yet. I see no value in acting like there's anything else to this.

Actually it's worse than not having value it's an active insult to Ussop's character and/or an admission that these assholes constant slander did get to us. Because Ussop isn't the only character with bs claims about his worth, strength and future but he's the only one for whom these bs claims get entrained as actual possibilities including by people who like him. Genuinely wondering if he's unimportant enough to be fridged for other's character development is about as absurd as genuinely wondering if Mihawk's sword is painted.

And it's just such a waste of "talking about Ussop" time. Because while we're making posts to affirm that the sky is blue we're not discussing any interesting actual possibilities for Ussop's development. Like the idea of him remaining on Elbaph to train for some reason is genuinely intriguing. What could push him to do that? Who would train him and for what exactly? And even outside of that we could be talking about what Elbaph means to him and why or if Ussop's meeting with his father will go well ect ect... But no instead we're once again reminding each other that Oda isn't writing a tragedy.

Something I don't see a ton of in discussions of Marineford, is Garps role, or rather lack of one, during Ace's execution. Now, Garp gets a ton of critisism for his actions (something he 100% deserves) and seeming lack of compassion for a child he raised getting executed, simply for existing. I just want to add a little something that, while doesn't excuse anything he did or didn't do, adds a little sparkle, a little crumb of tragedy to the whole thing.

Now Garp and Luffy are extremely similar people. The anime and manga make this extremely clear whenever these characters are placed either together, or even in similar situations. These two are not only related by blood, but they've also spent an abundance of time together, evidenced by them picking up little quirks and personality traits from each other. Following that line of thought, we can then infer some of Garp's own personality traits simply by translating Luffy's over.

Which is why I firmly believe that if Ace had, at any point, asked Garp to save him, Garp would have had him outta that seastone and halfway to Whitebeard before anyone could even blink. Which then adds to the inherent tragedy of it all because Ace was never going to ask that of Garp, hell he wasn't going to ask that of Whitebeard, a man who became a father to him. Ace never believed his own life was worth anything so he was never going to ask anyone to save it.

Garp was willing to throw it all away for someone if only they would ask, for someone who was never going to ask, even if it kills him.

Utterly shameless self promotion here because yes my point exactly. People act like Garp was just having a normal day at work meanwhile he got bodied by pre-timeskip Luffy like that's apparently not a pretty big indicator that he really, really wanted Ace saved. I firmly belive he stayed next to Ace in case Ace changed his mind and Sengoku stayed next to him because he knew just how close Garp was to pull the most public and world shaking side switch in Marine history.

What's especially infuriating to me is that Ussop is not the only straw hat who would have wanted her to lie but he's the only one who would ever have gotten shit for it. Like, try and argue that Sanji would have wanted her to stick to her guns and risk death I dare you. Every widespread "Ussop sucks" bs is just something literally no one would care about if it was any other character. Including when we can verify that he's the only one held to those standards. Really people who mock Ussop are reading the manga and watching the anime already having decided they hate him and watching everything he's in for a reason to express their disdain. Like when he was the only one to lend a blow on Gunko but all anyone did was meme him getting hit like it didn't happen to anyone else.

One piece theory I've never seen before :

The true power of Law's devil fruit is to copy the ability of other devil fruits within "room"

Law's fruit is an anomaly even by paramecia standards. Some of the things it allows Law to do remains the way he leaves them no matter what happens to him which is rare rare in one piece. It's not bound to a single effect or even a general red thread if you actually think about it. Law himself relates all his techniques to surgery but he's doing some serious mental gymnastics to do so. There isn't an inherent connection to that in most cases so I propose the simple answer that Law makes up the connection to surgery based solely on his belief that this is what his fruit is about because that's what he was told it was when he ate it and also it's his power so he can call his moves whatever he wants.

But why do I say he copies other devil fruits ? Well when you look at his abilities some of them are really similar to those of devil fruit users we know :

- Separating people into pieces that can be independently controlled and reassembled with no health risk for the sliced up people ? Sounds a lot like an other way to use Buggy's fruit.

- Putting up a transparent shield ? One calls it "Antibiotic Armament", another calls it "barriere". Which one makes more sense ?

- Canceling sounds within room ? Law literally tells us who he gets this one from

We know that the user's beliefs concerning the power of their devil fruit has a massive impact on how the abilities granted by the fruit manifest. It has been confirmed verbatim in sbs 114 with Oda saying the personality of the user shines. And thanks to Luffy we also know the users beliefs can quite literally cover up the true nature of the fruit to the user themselves. He spent over a decade convinced his fruit is the gum-gum fruit and only manifesting abilities related to rubber until Onigashima and his awakening and he's only now starting to develop abilities unrelated to that thanks to the freedom of mind granted by gear 5.

We could list other examples like Bonney. Who can turn anything and anyone including herself into explicitly what she believes the future could look like.

Knowing that, it seems plausible that for Law to access an ability, he needs to mentally relate it to surgery because in his mind it's what his fruit allows him to do. whether it's logical or not doesn't matter. What matters is that it makes sense to him. That he belives it's something he can and wants to do. Like Vegapunks said, every devil fruit represents a possibility dreamed by someone. Wouldn't it make sense that someone once dreamt of being the ultimate jack of all trades?

Couldn’t stop thinking about this, though it might be such a nothing sort of thing.

“Quite a reputation,” yet the Rumbar Pirates were formed because of Yorki’s love of music. Their philosophy was to bring smiles to children. They didn’t (at least not that I can remember) plunder or raid places for treasure. The instance it’s shown them with treasure, it just states they “found it.” They did have battles with other pirates/marines but would that really earn Yorki such a reputation?

His bounty, when he earns it, isn’t even shown. What did he do? Unless I’m reading into it way too much which is most likely the case, or Yorki just has a bit of an ego.

Unless him referring to himself instead of collectively the Rumbar Pirates maybe means he had a reputation before becoming a pirate?

I’m definitely reading into this too much now, I’m probably missing somewhere where something was said explicitly and I just didn’t catch it. I have so many questions about his and Brook’s pasts before the backstory, it drives me crazy sometimes. I can’t help but try to get answers or perhaps ask more questions from what little is shown.

I think there's probably plenty of backstory we don't know about, but on the other hand, this stood out to me and I wanted to answer:

"They did have battles with other pirates/marines but would that really earn Yorki such a reputation?"

Because, well, in the One Piece universe....yeah.

Something that's fundamental to my understanding of OP's world building (but I don't see talked about often) is that the marines assign bounties based not on crimes committed or people harmed, but on power level in relation to the government. Flying a pirate flag automatically marks you as an enemy, because it's a sign of rebellion against the law. Even if you haven't committed any crime yet, you become part of the criminal social class, and your rights are essentially forfeit.

Once you're established as inherently a criminal, any power you gain is automatically a threat. It's not about whether you've done atrocities or stolen tons of money, it's about whether you contribute to a society that disregards or opposes the government.

This is illustrated pretty clearly with the Strawhats.

Luffy gets his first bounty after defeating Arlong, another (far more vicious) pirate. He literally did the marines' job that they'd been putting off for a decade for them, and they got together and said "whoa, we can't have a Pirate who's that powerful."

The same thing happens not much later with Crocodile.

Even Shells town was a relatively minor offense all things considered--the marines under Morgan literally thanked him for taking the guy out. No kills, either, all he did was beat up like 20 guys and sail away with Zoro, who also hadn't committed an actual crime.

The Strawhats don't even really steal anything until Skypeia (not knowing it was already gonna be given to them lol), which is out of the marines' jurisdiction anyway and they probably never knew the details. But by then they're already famous threats!!

By the time Luffy declares war on the World Government, he's already had multiple bounties put on him for effectively saving their asses.

So, if Yorki's crew did nothing but sail around playing music and making children smile, but defeated some other pirates or marines also...that shows they're capable of some power. Worse, they probably looked like the good guys while doing it! And because they're Pirates, that cannot be allowed. The marines will put bounties on them, spread rumors about them, tell everyone they're dangerous criminals, because they are dangerous...to the oppressive power structures at play.

Yes ! Exactly !

The bounties are based on how dangerous characters are to the authority of the world's government, either for their actual actions or their potential if they were to act against it. Which is why 8 year old Robin is given one of the if not THE highest starting bounty in one piece. Of course they pin on her the genocide of her island's people but that's just a convenient way to make sure no one helps her. They don't literally think she's physically dangerous. It's just that if she's allowed to roam free, learn what she wants to and make it public they're in trouble.

I've been trying to find any info on what the original wording for the Yamato 40y/60y thing is (because the translation everybody's sharing is so awkward) and I finally found a YouTube video that reads it out loud lol

(It does have automated English dubbing but the autodub messes up the line I was looking for, which is the 60yo Yamato line)

「やだよ偉くなるの」

Which is something like "I don't wanna become a big shot"

I think he's kinda echoing what Luffy said after Dressrosa:

「偉くなりてェわけじゃねェ!!!」

Different wording (Yamato does have a very different style of speech than Luffy) but the same sentiment

So I guess you could take this as a sign of Yamato following Luffy's example instead of Oden's

But I actually think that if Oden hadn't been forced by the circumstances, he might have had the same attitude as Luffy. He even used the same exact word as Luffy: 窮屈

Oden tried to live the life of a feudal lord and found it stifling. Luffy outright refuses without even giving it a shot. (I've posted about this before btw)

And that face is reminiscent of Oden's disgusted face

Also 60yo Yamato is still wearing Oden's symbol, the crescent moon, on his cape. It's the same crescent moon worn by Oden, Oden's retainers and Momo after Onigashima:

Very similar in design to Momo's cape in fact. It's more subtle than going for the full Oden look and trying to straight up cosplay as the guy, but it's still a nod to the man who was his inspiration.

So I don't think this should be taken as a sign that he's giving up on being Oden, just not following Oden's exact path (which would lead to getting cooked)

After all, in the end Oden did try to accept the responsibility of the shogun (despite never actually holding that office) and it got him killed. To Yamato, Oden represents freedom, and Yamato has the chance to become even more free than him; more Oden than Oden

I think that's poetic

Also as the youtuber I linked above pointed out, the second future is less like a "future where something went wrong" and more like a "future where he overdoes it" lol

Also yeah that first 40yo Yamato definitely implies that he's joining the Straw Hats

By the way, on Yamato's style of speech: I've been rewatching Revolutionary Girl Utena and realising that Yamato definitely has some Utena vibes, one of those being his way of speaking

It's boyish, I guess, which is kinda funny since he's like 28, and it would be even more so at age 60. Idk, not sure what to think about the implications

Of course the other big similarity with Utena is the whole "admiring a guy and deciding to become him" thing. In Utena's case I don't think she ever actually identifies as male, she just identifies as "prince", and then it leads to a whole deconstruction of the concept of princehood and patriarchy. Not just that Utena shouldn't be a prince but princes shouldn't even exist.

In Yamato's case he does choose to become a man and there's no deconstruction of Oden's character; Oden is framed as a genuinely positive rolemodel (it's fair to question whether that's for the best, but overall I do think he is pretty cool)

I don't think this is meant to be read as a direct response to RGU or anything, and it wouldn't be a very good response, but they do sort of complement each other. Yamato is more of an escapist fantasy for gnc trans men, Utena is more like a societal critique of masculinity and the patriarchy, and also probably leaning more gnc lesbian than trans

Well, that's my reading anyway, idk (also I haven't finished my rewatch yet so we'll see how I feel by the end)

Either way I think both kinds of narratives are necessary and good to have

Something about Impel Down and the subversion of the queer villain trope

It just occurred to me that I'm honestly not even sure if anyone on the prison break team (not counting the randos) is both straight and cis? Because Luffy is ace, Croc might be trans, I can't remember if Buggy has ever shown any interest in a woman, and the same goes for Mr. 3 and Mr. 1 and also Jinbe (and Croc as well)

I mean some of them might be straight but there's just no evidence for it, or at least none I can think of. Half of them are kinda queercoded too

And everybody else on the team is just blatantly and explicitly queer.

Anyway my point is, a bunch of them are former villains-turned-allies, and then there's Iva and Inazuma and the New Kamas and Jinbe who are villainised by the system and also introduced in a very ominous way, almost like they're supposed to be villains, but then they turn out to be some of the most heroic characters in the series

Meanwhile a whole bunch of the Impel Down guards are shown drooling over Hancock or Bon-as-Nami, and seem to be framed as straight (despite being very camp as well to be fair) — in any case more so at least than the prison break team

(I also rewatched Rocky Horror Picture Show last weekend and obviously it very much plays around with the queer villain archetype, because Dr. Frank-N-Furter is very obviously the villain of the movie in the traditional sense, but he's also the one you're supposed to be rooting for, lbr. That said I love that Oda made his version of Frank-N-Furter an actual good guy. A bit of an antihero in some sense maybe, but that only serves to make vem more iconic)

Also a sidenote: in retrospect the entire Baroque Works organisation is so queercoded, and it is kinda the queercoded villain trope played straight (pun not intended).... except that the most explicitly queer one out of them turns into an ally lmao

Usopp and Egghead

(Possible Egghead spoilers)

while watching and reading Egghead, I realized Usopp actually had several moments that stood out to me in a quiet but meaningful way.

When he moved to protect the Thousand Sunny without panicking, even as Nami and Chopper were visibly freaking out, that mattered. He wasn’t spiraling. He wasn’t collapsing under pressure. He just acted. There was steadiness there.

Then you have Oimo and Kashi stepping in to save Sanji’s life simply because he is Sniper king’s friend. That is legacy. That is influence. That is a reputation that continues to move even when Usopp himself is not center frame.

And that small anime moment where Usopp realizes Luffy’s plan is probably going to fail, but accepts it anyway because there is nothing else to do. That was growth too. Not loud growth. Not flashy growth. But acceptance. Trust. And maturity.

Egghead gave him these cutscene type beats that reaffirmed something I have always felt. Usopp has presence. He has gravity. He affects the board even when he is not the strongest piece on it.

He is magnetizing in a way that does not always scream for attention, but it moves people. And Egghead reminded me of that.

York is genuinely such an underrated One Piece villain

She's so different from pretty much any other villain in the series, right? Absolutely everybody underestimates her and she uses that to her advantage so skillfully, and frankly it would have worked if not for those meddling Straw Hats and CP0. She's also just a fun and unique character, period, she has such a different vibe from anyone else in the series that I can think of. She truly doesn't care what other people think about her, she's extremely childish but also extremely intelligent. And she was literally created by Vegapunk

She represents one of the darker sides of science and of Vegapunk's hubris. She also fits the theme of rebellion and the danger of using people as tools. She's like the evil mirror of Bonney who was in some sense born to be a science experiment as well, turning against her "creator"

For the most part she also wins, she gets what she wanted, even though she didn't quite manage to kill all the other Vegapunks. It doesn't go perfectly for her, but at the end of the day, the Elders do accept her deal and presumably Imu does as well. And the fact that she succeeds means that she's possibly the most dangerous person alive right now. She has the power plant and is able to create the Mother Flame which can then be used to power Imu's weapon.

Saturn was completely and utterly defeated, humiliated, and then killed by Imu, but York is still doing great. She didn't succeed in all of her goals but the most important ones she did. She's a lot like Ener in that sense, the other villain who wasn't really defeated, only stopped from causing quite as much destruction as they were trying to cause. (I guess Blackbeard is the third example, the one who never fully loses. And maybe Akainu.)

And unlike Ener who we haven't heard from in nearly two decades now and who may or may not come back, York is absolutely going to keep being a problem by helping the CDs with none of Stella's scruples.

I just enjoy her too, she's delightfully evil in such a simple way without being narratively shallow. She's also cute as hell lbr.

Two things I like about York's character :

1 : How much sense it makes for her to be the traitor.

Her purpose as intended by Vegapunk was to be entirely focused on fulfilling biological needs, which simultaneously explains why no one ever looked into her as the traitor (they didn't expect her to put that much effort into anything) and why she was the traitor (they really should have, since her whole point is biological survival and maximum comfort and what the Vegapunks were doing could get them all killed by the government any day.) If any rat was going to abandon ship before it sunk, especially by getting on a much nicer ship and even if it means precipitating the sinking, it's the one who was designed to only care for food and rest. She's a Vegapunk too so of course her single minded focus on these things would include a well thought through plan to ensure the best source of both forever.

2 : what her interactions with the Seraphims might say about them, her and the other Vegapunks.

Am I the only one who finds York was the sole person to interact with the Seraphims like they were people too ? All the other Vegapunks treat them like objects. Taking for a fact that these five were all good people and York is not, my interpretation is that the Vegapunks capable of remorse simply cannot handle seeing the Seraphims as real kids because doing so requires facing up to commiting the second-worst crime against humanity they ever committed pretty much every day (top spot earned by knowingly creating a generator for a genocide weapon) which they can simply escape the weight of by pretending the kids are some kind of robots while York, not knowing much about guilt and not seeing much value in people in general, can just interact normally with them.

On first watch I was confused by how York was able to turn the Seraphims against people who have equal authority over them as herself. Theoretically one against five should have made them side with the bigger number of their bosses and they could have warned them somehow, they're able to speak and move of their own volition they could have done something... unless they were perfectly fine with York's idea and didn't want to go against her. I just don't think it's a coincidence that the only person who pats their heads and calls them cute is the one who was able to plan based on the idea that they would follow her orders in a building filled with five other people they supposedly can't disobey. It's unlikely that York genuinely cares for the Seraphims but the Seraphims likely prefer her to the other Vegapunks, which means that personal feelings might impact their obedience levels.

I do think they established that people can't override commands that have been given earlier by someone on the same level in the command structure (although frankly that seems ridiculous to me) but it's a very interesting idea that it might not be the only reason...

Also S-Snake would be extra weak to Luffy because he absolutely talks to her like a person

I'm convinced that if S-snake comes back there's going to be a thing of her overiding her commands for Luffy. We're already seeing hints of the idea that you can't ever truly program a person into having zero free will with Kuma's behavior and it's a really well suited storyline for one piece. Honestly i think her feelings ARE explained by how Luffy treats her. Hancock's love for him being etched into her DNA is an unhinged concept but Hancock's attachement issues causing her tendency to latch on hard and fast to the first man to not treat her like an object being what's actualy passed on is already more conceivable
