BAD TYPOGRAPHY?

There are so many elements of bad typography. One of it may be on the font, spacing or the color chosen for the background. When those problems occur, it can be detected instantly. It is either the poster looks awkward or weird. 

As you can see the first poster, the fonts usage is not suitable and placed awkwardly. The designer should have stick to only two identical fonts to avoid the poster looking weird. The fonts for details of venue, time and place should be bolder so that it is easier for people to read. The color of font used for the name of the event also dimmed with the background and the visual and cannot be seen as the main attention.

For the second poster, the poster looks crowded as the visual being placed and layered wrongly and the font used is not suitable to be put on the visual. The font used for the name of the event should have been more relaxed so that it does not look awkward to be placed on the top or to be compared with the font of the details and he color used also is not match with the whole design and visuals. Also, the visual of the firework should not be placed on top of the calligraphy visual. It makes the poster looks more crowded and lack of spacing for the visual. The designer should stick to only one visual that symbolizes Hari Raya.

Bad Typography: In House Edition

In this post, I’m going to talk about bad typography that I can find around my house and luckily, I found one. This is based on my own opinion.

Food

As you can see above, it is a tempura batter by the brand Bestari. Why I chose this? In my opinion, the typography is a mess. Let me point it out:

The kerning in Tempura Batter text and the Chinese translation for it is too wide, need to make it closer.

TOO MANY FONTS USED!

The composition is disturbing.

Extra point: The packaging is not attractive at all. It looks cheap (it is cheap in price) and looks lame. But the batter is delicious!

Clothing

This may look like a normal t-shirt but I dislike how huge the writing is! I know that this is a statement t-shirt but the size of the typography is too big and long. I bought this when I was in high school. Maybe at that time I thought it’s cool but now that I’ve learn about it, this shirt is a no-no. It makes the wearer looks weird.

Stationary

By the shape that is shown at the packaging you know what it is. This is paper clip. Notice something else? Yes, the name of the brand. The brand is ‘Penguin Brand’ but admit it, you can only see ‘Enguin Brand’. The letter P is hidden by the price tag (unavoidable factor) and because the letter P is far away from the rest if the text. The kerning is wide.

That’s it from me regarding bad typography. A company should take typography seriously because it affect the image of the product.

Bad Typography Around Me

Because we are all staying home and staying safe, my adventure for bad typography out there had to be cancelled. Instead, I decided have to look around the house and see what I could find.

Here are 3 eyesores of typography that are worth discussing:

1. MY SECONDARY SCHOOL YEAR BOOK

This is my secondary school yearbook for the year 2012. Yes, it is a lot to take in. A whopping total of 8 typefaces used on 1 cover. Serif, Sans Serif, Fancy, you name it. Its all there concluding to total disaster. One good rule of typography every designer needs to know is that 3 fonts is the pure maximum. An appropriate amount of typefaces would be enough to deliver the message.

2. A HANDY SOUVENIR

This is a grooming set case from a neighbouring country. The typography is undoubtably an eyesore. The country’s name is decked out with their national colours, stars and ...hearts. Also, the awfully unique positioning or leading of the individual letters adds to the long list of why this is an example of bad typography. Overall bad design indeed.

3. A REGULAR MILK CARTON

This is a milk carton. I found it not around my house, instead, it struck my eye while i was casually scrolling through Twitter. Let’s start up top with that striking bold logo. That stripy yellow and red is a dangerous statement itself. But against a plain white background, not too bad. Then we go down to the brand’s slogan I suppose, which states “Truly Original” in an Indian inspired font which is odd and totally unrelated. To add, that choice of slime green in a handwritten font to describe the product seals the deal of bad typography and design. In a nutshell, never allow too many things to happen on a carton of milk.

Good/Bad example of Typography no.5

This would have been a good example of typography, but the only problem i could spot from here is very obvious. 

The kerning in this example just needs to be pushed in together a bit more because at the moment it looks like its saying “SA VINGS”

Good/Bad example of typography no.4

This image makes me wonder if the designer who created this sign had ever looked at their own design before publishing it to the public. This is a bad example typography format. The kerning in the work ‘THERAPIST’ needs to be worked on and it gives off a different message to the public when they at it. The leading needs to be tweaked on as well due to both words being not in lined together, but other than that the font they used actually works well with the style that they are hoping to go for.
