i am sick and tired of seeing posts suggesting that both wearing the hijab and being half naked is empowering for women. empowerment is “the giving or delegation of power or authority”. the meaning of the hijab and other muslim coverings is the very definition of rape culture and victim blaming. what power or authority does a woman get by wearing a symbol which suggests that she should cover her body so men won’t sexually assault her? what power or authority does a woman get by wearing oversexualized clothes which are literally designed to satisfy the male gaze? none. both panders to male desires. both is the exact opposite of empowerment and female liberation. you are not woke or intersectional, you are rebranding misogynistic bullshit as empowerment.
Agreed. The question we should ask when it comes to these “it’s empowering!!” messages is, do you see men doing or wearing whatever it is? Do you see people with actual power in society, the movers and shakers and the people who managed to hoard the resources, doing or wearing these things? No? Then maybe it’s not actually empowering.
It really isn’t complicated.

So happy to see the votes for women sticker getting around!!
Technically, yes, “they” can refer to a singular unspecified person, and “they” has been used in this context long before the trans movement. But there’s something simply amazing about seeing someone use “she” to refer to a hypothetical human. I saw a tweet that talked about a possible situation and said something along the lines of “If a person earned x amount of money every day, she would be able to do y.” It’s so subtle, yet so important. We’re so used to seeing men as the default, to seeing “he” be used for a person of an unspecified sex, so it’s kind of amazing. Little linguistics things matter. Imagine the effect on little girls, finally hearing “she” rather than just “he.” It’s so validating. I exist, I am human.
I try to do this in the boring documentation I write for work even, because I agree it’s important.
I’ve seen a few people saying Ellen Page has no obligation to be a role model or activist just because she’s a celebrity, but that’s not the point. It’s not that any lesbian has an obligation to put her sexuality in the spotlight, or become an activist, even if I’m glad when those with a public platform do. This isn’t that. This isn’t staying quiet, or declining to discuss your sexual orientation. This isn’t choosing to just do your job and keep your head down. She could have fucking done that. She has a wife, she doesn’t even have to field questions about whether she’d date a gendered dick haver, for fuck’s sake! This is directly harmful. She’s doing perfomative “activism” for an ideology with misogyny, homophobia and conversion therapy at its very core. She’s a publicly out lesbian “validating” all their delusional, hateful bullshit. She’s supporting, and has joined, a movement that demands we all bow down to straight men with corrective rape fetishes. It’s no different to someone finding jesus and celebrating her newfound ability to pray the gay away. In some ways, I think this might be even worse. She’s actively doing harm. She’s contributing to something that causes a level of hurt to lesbians that no genderist screaming about hate and hurt from their privileged, entitled, safe little bubbles could even begin to comprehend, and we have every right to be upset about it. Fuck every last one of them.
I think often about how every lesbian/GNC girl I knew from school has come out as trans and then I see this shit and it makes me livid. Lesbians are getting the message loud and clear that the best course of action is to deny their innate sexual orientarion and cosplay as a heterosexual member of the opposite sex. Young GNC girls are learning that there is no place for them in this world. Ellen Page chose to side with the people who worship and protect male autogynophiles above all else, the side of people who believe that women who aren’t straight or feminine must live their lives as men instead of just being themselves. It’s a fucking tragedy and my heart aches for little girls everywhere who are going to see this news and start to believe that they were “born in the wrong body” (whatever the fuck that means) and start considering mutilating their own bodies to fit the narrative that anyone who isn’t hyperfeminine must be a man. Fuck Ellen Page and fuck her dumbass wife for promoting conversion therapy rhetoric.
Maybe this is why this movement loves all of those third gender designations in various cultures. Because this is exactly what they were/are. You’re gay and can’t fit into our patriarchal, heteronormative society? Well we’ll just pretend you’re the opposite sex because there’s no proper place for you here.
It’s regressive as hell.
