Taughannock Falls
Since I’m down to the last few days I’ll be spending in Ithaca for my sabbatical, I’ve been trying to do and see all the classic Ithaca things I haven’t taken the time for yet. One of those was to take the hike to see the falls at Taughannock Falls State Park. So even though it wasn’t the greatest weather today, a bit muggy and threatening to rain, I took the opportunity to drive over to the west side of Cayuga Lake early this afternoon.
Compared to other hikes in the region, the Gorge Trail at Taughannock is more of a stroll. A rather flat, leisurely, 3/4-mile walk along the winding Taughannock Creek between the gorge cliffs. Signs along the route point out features of the environment to notice. The trail was a bit muddy in places because of the recent rain, but still very passable, and there were lots of people out at the park this afternoon.
At the end of the trail is the 215-foot falls, the tallest in the eastern U.S. They were full of water today, so the spray was significant, and I got pretty damp while standing at the closest point.
There were two geese enjoying the afternoon in the pool below the falls as well.
On my way back along the trail, I ran into several people I know -- colleagues from work and folks from church.
All in all, a successful outing.
