Reports say Texas recruits ill from outbreak, which comes weeks after defense secretary made flu vaccine optional

An influenza outbreak has reportedly sickened more than 150 recruits in training at Lackland air force base in San Antonio, Texas.
The outbreak comes just weeks after the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, ended mandatory flu vaccination for the military, citing the need for bodily autonomy for servicemembers.
“We’re seizing this moment to discard any absurd overreaching mandates that only weaken our war fighting capabilities,” said Hegseth in an April social media video. “In this case that includes the universal flu vaccine and the mandate behind it.
“Your body, your faith and your convictions are not negotiable,” said Hegseth.
At least 159 recruits have fallen ill, according to the New York Times and ABC News. After Hegseth made influenza shots optional, only about 40% of recruits opted to get vaccinated, air force officials told the New York Times.
About 46% of adults were vaccinated against influenza in the 2025-26 cold season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The cost of normalizing anti-vaxxer idiocy: Nearly 160 recruits at Lackland AFB fell sick with the flu. This is made possible to due to Drunkard Pete’s foolish decision to end vaccine mandates for the flu.

I know it's not a competition and I don't wish to treat is as such; I just want to be able to participate more. Many are writing ten times as much as me on top of working full time jobs, and I'm here wiped out and scrolling and whining for the rest of the day because I went and got groceries this morning and now there's no energy left in my tank, not even for anything fun.
This experience is probably very good for me because being a person who obsesses over whether he is Keeping Up and Pulling His Weight and Doing Enough is no doubt a good part of what got me so deep in burnout in the first place. Being forced to stop doing that is probably long overdue.
But I hate it. I hate it because there's so much fun going on and on a good day I can contribute just a little to it before I become useless again. I hate it because giving and doing are how I express affection and gratitude, and instead I am having to shut up, sit down and rely on the patience and grace and understanding of my friends 99% of the time.
I hate being forced to confront how unsafe that makes me feel among my friends, and I hate everything that tells me about my mental model for human interaction and my self esteem. My friends are doing nothing at all to give me reason to worry. They are extending me every ounce of patience and love that I would extend them, were the tables turned.
I do not like the tables being this way around. I do not like having this shrilly ringing red telephone in my head and knowing that the call is coming from inside the house.
I do not want to learn how to accept instead of giving and I do not want to learn how to believe I am still valuable when I have frighteningly little to give.
I want to go back to the times when I felt safest. To all the times I was giving and giving and giving to someone else, and feeling that rush of warmth and love that comes from believing they will do the same for me, one day when I need it.
I never wanted to actually fucking need it. Not for more than a few minutes or hours at a time - days, at most.
It's been months. This might just be my life now. This might be all I have to give, forever.
It's beginning to sink in and it feels extra terrifying today.
I do not know how to feel safe with people I can't do much for. I am tired of being anxious that people I think are awesome will gradually go off me and drift away. I am tired of being useless. I am tired.

“Protest is the heartbeat of a functioning democracy,” Ezra Levin, co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible, told HuffPost.

Protests in America are older than America itself. Three years before the U.S. declared independence, fed-up settlers in Massachusetts spent three hours dumping tea in the harbor — a rebellion Americans now fondly know as the Boston Tea Party.
“Protest is the heartbeat of a functioning democracy. America was born not only from a rejection of monarchy, but from the vision of a democracy of, by, and for the people,” Ezra Levin, co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible, an organization involved with No Kings demonstrations, told HuffPost. Those protests, most recently on March 28, have assembled millions of demonstrators across the country to denounce President Donald Trump’s second term.
Trump signed an executive order in March 2025 aimed at removing information from national parks, monuments, museums and memorials that portrayed the U.S. as “inherently racist, sexist, oppressive, or otherwise irredeemably flawed” to remind the country of “our extraordinary heritage, consistent progress toward becoming a more perfect Union, and unmatched record of advancing liberty, prosperity, and human flourishing.”
But the order is just one component of a yearslong effort from conservatives to downplay and rewrite the country’s problematic and dark past by attacking and stifling “woke” policies and critical race theory.
Trump’s two administrations have also actively targeted marginalized groups, including women, immigrants, people of color, the LGBTQIA+ community and more, actively rolling back hard-fought protections for these groups over time.
This, of course, has not come without backlash: the 2017 Women’s March on Washington, the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement and the recent anti-ICE demonstrations, to name a few.
Trump has repeatedly derided people who demonstrate against him and his causes, at one point in 2016 saying he wanted to punch a protester at a Nevada rally in the face. The president, who is known for his tendency to call his opponents names, has also referred to protesters in Los Angeles who opposed his immigration enforcement raids as “animals,” “insurrectionists” and “a foreign enemy.”
All of this is in direct opposition to Americans’ First Amendment right to free speech and protest, and effectively disregards the importance of protest in the country over the past 250 years. The irony in the country’s Freedom 250 celebrations is that not everyone in this country has been free for 250 years, and that conservatives and the Trump administration are continuing to work toward restricting freedoms that would not have been possible without protest.
“Any moment where we have advanced as a country, where we’ve deepened democracy, where we have unwound white supremacy and advanced equality, there have been massive protest movements that were grassroots, coming from the public and pushing politicians forward to push America to live up to its full promises,” Nicole Carty, executive director of Get Free, told HuffPost. “It really is through fully reckoning with our history and undoing the legacies that made us unequal in the beginning of this country, and when we have done that — like an abolitionist movement, civil rights movement — we’ve seen democracy, equality, and economic prosperity grow for everyone. There is still work to be done.”
More than 100 demonstrations across the nation are set to take place on Saturday with Get Free, an organization sponsoring the “All of US” protests.

Of course, protests are not strictly American. But American protests are absolutely inseparable from U.S. history. When taking a glimpse at American protests over the years, the divisions and contentions of the country become crystal clear.

The enslavement of Africans began in the British colonies, soon to be the United States, in 1619, more than 150 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed. From that came numerous rebellions and raids against slavery, including Nat Turner’s Rebellion in Virginia in 1831, the Harpers Ferry Raid in Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1859 and the raid at Combahee River in South Carolina that freed 700 enslaved people in 1863.
A century later, the Civil Rights Movement in the ’50s and ’60s inspired countless demonstrations advocating for desegregation and the end to discrimination against Black people in the U.S.
Indigenous activism is also crucial to understanding the history of America, which sits upon land stolen from Indigenous peoples. In 1969, 89 members of the Indians of All Tribes (IOAT) began a 19-month occupation of Alcatraz Island in California in an effort to reclaim the land.
“We, the native Americans, re-claim the land known as Alcatraz Island in the name of all American Indians by right of discovery,” their proclamation read. “This tiny island would be a symbol of the great lands once ruled by free and noble Indians.”

So I absolutely loved this episode and I watched this with my grandmother who loves the show.
We both agreed that the scenes in the Red Keep gave us goosebumps in the way the inheritance hearing did when Viserys I walked in.
I found it moving how Emma Darcy portrayed Rhaenyra grief over her son Jace as I found her performance of pretending he was still alive by asking "what do you have to say for yourself? " very sad as it showed that she was not ready to come to terms with her eldests death so soon after he defied her words. I cried when Harry Collet was being carried in.
I was happy to see that Corlys was still alive and liked how Baela and his sons found him. I am not the biggest fan for what they are putting Rhaena through at the moment and I feel bad for her as she did not know that what her actions would result in as in her mind she was just trying to help - However, I also find her actions irresponsible as she would have known Sheep stealer was a wild dragon and those dragons are known for being untamed (plus she would also know dragons and riders take years to form a bond and for dragons to listen to their riders no matter what) but she is one of my favourite characters and I feel bad for her.
WHY DID THEY WRITE IN THE ALICENT AND JASPER SCENE. no because it was unneeded and if they wanted to set up for Daemon being in the dungeons they could have had Jasper confront Alicent and try to grab her to stop her from running away and the maester + the knights would have witnessed that but I hated that scene.
The parralells between Daemon and Aemond in Harenhall were impeccable as they both walk in while Lord Strong was eating with his sons. But Aemond is more reckless and impatient this season as seen in episode 1 with the maester
Alys had a lovely performance this episode loved the cliffhanger.
When Daemon and Rhaenyra walked through the keep I enjoyed seeing him protecting her.
Now to the scene that had me and my grandmother feeling goosebumps was when Daemon and Rhaenyra were being surrounded and then you see the gold cloaks. When I saw the cloaks I new it was over for the Green knights - also when daemon led them through the keep it reminded and drew parralells to the first season.
When Daemon walked into the throne room with Otto and before when he first saw Otto in the cells I felt goosebumps as it's been forever to see Rhys Ifans as Otto but I felt bad for Rhaenyra as she did not want to get rid of Otto herself but when Otto being him asked for Daemon to do it as he did not believe Rhaenyra could do a quick job of it that's when I felt bad. This is because she still was being underestimated.
May I just say I love Helaena and Alicent in this episode as when Ali went to get Helaena I loved how she brought up last seasons conversation of Helaena admitting "I was happier before I was Queen" and I really want to see fan art of Helaena, Alicent and Jaehaera raising chickens now.
When Helaena commanded for no creatures to be hurt and looked at Alicent smiling it made me think she was asking silently - did I say it right or are you proud.
So overall it was a 9/10 episode less points for Alicent scene. Poor Alicent this season
