Sherlock sketch dump
Vincent Starrett, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
I won this auction at @221bcon! This is a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle’s son Adrian and John Dickson Carr (who I suspect did most of the heavy lifting). It was originally published in 1952; this is the 1970s paperback reissue. It’s okay. The MAIN reason I wanted it is to share with you….
…the very last page. Apparently ACD’s own son hated the idea of Holmes and Watson being separated in retirement so much that he published his own fix-it fic!
January 29th: A strange meeting
So tomorrow, we’re off to look at a flat. Me and the madman. Me and Sherlock Holmes.
Me and the madman❤️❤️
oh god look what i found

the shirt is a little bit off, but mind palace john
is totally meant to be wearing the same thing as pool scene john
right down to the belt and shoes
this has to mean something, otherwise mind palace john would have just been wearing what actual john was actually wearing that morning
my money is on the idea that this is a representation of sherlock’s nostalgia/wistfulness/pining for a time when it was just the two of them against the rest of the world, at the very least.
The way Sherlock has immortalized John in his head is the moment when Sherlock realized exactly how much John meant to him (it would no doubt be undeniable when facing John’s imminent death) and the moment when John gave the little nod of acquiescence that he would stand with Sherlock to that death.
oh shit oH Shit OH SHIT
This is an absolute religious experience that I was not prepared for
Whoever did the caps for this deserves an award
Can never not reblog this, a Scottish national treasure 😂
All this and then, instead of any number of, uh, saltier terms that might have been used, along comes “agitated”…

the woman you have made your wife and the

also quick appreciation for the fact that sherlock found the least romantic way to express john’s marriage with mary here ... “the woman you have made your wife” instead of the woman you love or the woman who you chose to spend the rest of your life with or any other phrase in the myriad of options - this language feels almost clinical, esp in comparison to “the! man! you! have! saved!”
he’s highlighting the important contrast in these relationships - where his choice to marry mary *cough* is fixed, but his devotion and importance in sherlock’s life is grander and elevated.
mary you may have chosen as your legal partner, but it’s me who you saved.
and not even, let's say, "the man whose life you've saved (multiple times actually)" - nope:
THE MAN YOU HAVE SAVED. PERIOD.
In just five words, Sherlock highlights John's all-encompassing quality of being his saviour.
John has not only saved Sherlock's life in a literal sense. John has saved Sherlock from the lifelong struggle of being alone, a freak, an outcast, a misunderstood genius. John has saved him from recklessness, from the siren call of drugs, from self-harm and from his being careless towards his own existence. John has saved him from a life devoid of sentiment.
John has saved Sherlock from himself.
“However, it does help to further illustrate how invaluable John is to me. I can read a crime scene the way he can understand a human being. I used to think that’s what made me special – quite frankly, I still do. But a word to the wise: should any of you require the services of either of us, I will solve your murder, but it takes John Watson to save your life. Trust me on that – I should know. He’s saved mine so many times, and in so many ways.”
— If you were worried — I wasn’t worried
The Secret Life of Sherlock Holmes, Billy Wilder, 1970.
Holmes really was like “the worst thing watson ever did to me was get married to someone who was not me” hello????
And in sign of four when Watson tells Holmes that he and Mary are engaged holmes is like “well at least I have cocaine still” what the fuck that’s literally crushingly sad
