Who knows what drastic measures you’d take to seek your revenge?” Lily teased back, settling comfortably with one leg tucked underneath herself, the other leg dangling over the edge of the tower. She paused briefly at the question, a small crease appearing between her brows as she thought about it, before she offered her friend a shrug, “I’m… alright, really, I am. I just… I dunno. I’ve been thinking a fair bit lately about what awaits for us outside the castle after we’re done with school, and… not knowing what the future has in store is more than just a little frightening.” She breathed out a sigh, and managed a smile to reassure her friend that she was doing just fine, “Sorry if I woke you.”

Marlene smiled widely as she swung her legs over the edge. “Come on, Lils. If you don’t have your life together, how do you expect the rest of us to fair?” she joked. “You didn’t wake me, either. It was my friend senses tingling that you needed me.” Marlene didn’t believe for one minute that Lily was fine. “Well we know a few things about the future,” she began, giving her friend a sideways glance. “We know the outside world is shit; it’s honestly falling apart. We know that Dick Van Dyke is a hero. And we know that you, Lily Evans, are going to be just fine,” she tried reassuring her friend. “I mean, what do you want to do when we leave here? If you could do anything at all? What would your heart pull you to?”

Mary listened intently to anything Marlene said. She clung to each word, and giggled when Marlene joked. “I’m glad things are better now. You deserve nothing but happiness, love.” She gave a soft smile. “I’ve been better, honestly. I’ve really let the stress this year get to me, so I’m quite glad that you invited me for a little holiday.” She admitted, glancing away from Marlene. Her secrets held on the tip of her tongue, but would not spill. “I love Hogwarts, but sometimes it can feel overwhelming. Especially since this is our last year and we have to start thinking of the future.” Mary shook her head, letting out a sigh. She regained her composure, though, sitting up straighter and putting that soft and gentle smile back on her face. “I don’t want to talk about that depressing stuff, we are here to have a good time.” She leaned forward on the table, “is there any gossip you have to tell?” Mary usually never liked to gossip with people, but with her girls, she enjoyed it. She knew this trip could be a good time to laugh and talk about what has been going on with other students at Hogwarts. The girl waved to Madame Rosmerta, once she saw the women, and she came over to their table. She knew that tonight was a night to get drunk, even though Mary was a terrible drunk at times, she felt courageous. “I’d like a firewhiskey, please.” 

Marlene couldn’t agree more about the stress that Hogwarts could bring. While muggles were deciding on what university they wanted to go to, they had to decide what they wanted to do with their whole lives. She simply shrugged though. “There’s a ton of gossip, always. It feels like love is brewing in every corridor,” she rolled her eyes. “It’s exhausting, really. Trying to keep up with all these couples and might-be’s,” Marlene chuckled to herself, and sipped on the drink she had ordered when she arrived. “But I want to hear more about you, babe. I feel like I haven’t been able to catch up to what you’ve been up to in ages,” she smiled, resting her chin on the palm of her hand. “Don’t tell me love is brewing for you too?”

While she had asked the question, a part of her in the back of her head didn’t want her to, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. She was excited, however, that her friend had decided to drink with her. It was always more fun when Marlene had someone to drink with, instead of all by herself. “There’s nothing fun going on with me right now, so please tell me something interesting. Let me live vicariously through you,” she joked. Her days had been rather bland as of late. It was one of the reasons she called for this getaway. As much as she figured Mary needed a break, she did as well.

Mary had been excited to spend some time away from Hogwarts with one of her dear friends, Marlene. She hadn’t spent time with the girl for awhile now, and Mary was happy to be able to finally talk and get caught up with her. It was also nice to be away from the looming threat of Mulciber. In Hogsmeade, it was as if his face disappeared from her mind. All she could think about was Marlene and her own excitement. She had told Marlene she would meet her at The Three Broomsticks, and hoped she hadn’t kept the other waiting. She really needed to finish up one of her Potions essays before heading off to her little weekend getaway. 

As she walked into The Three Broomsticks, her eyes roamed around for her friend. Once she spotted Marlene, she quickly made her way over and threw her arms around her. “Mars!” She exclaimed, holding her tightly. “I’ve missed you so much!” She pulled back and gave a big grin. “I hope I didn’t keep you waiting to long.” She took a seat, and let out a sigh. It was good to finally be able to relax in wonderful company. “I’m sorry I haven’t been able to be around you. I’ve been so busy with studying. You have no idea.” She shakes her head. “How have you been though? What’s been going on in your life?” Her eyes fixated on Marlene. It had felt like forever since she had really seen Marlene, and able to really look her over. She had worried about her, and also missed seeing her. She was still always amazed at how beautiful the other girl was, though. Any of her friends, really.

Marlene got excited when Mary accepted her invitation to go to Hogsmeade with her. It really had been a long time since they had seen each other, and even longer since they had gotten to talk one on one. She was excited for some much needed girl talk with her friend. She had gotten there a little early in her excitement, and went ahead and ordered them both a drink, sure that they both were in need of one after the past few weeks. Marlene’s recent depressive state and Mary’s seemingly constant run in with bad luck. Who said you couldn’t have a little vacation during the school year just because they slept there? 

When she saw Mary walk into the bar, she perked up immediately. “Mary! I’ve missed you too,” she smiled. “I really haven’t been waiting too long.” Even though she had gotten there early, she wasn’t about to tell Mary about that. Especially since Marlene was normally fashionably late to everything. “We’re seventh years now, there’s a lot of work that comes with being the queens of the school,” she joked. “Everything has been alright. I went on a bad streak for a while and hunkered down, but everything is better now. How have you been?” It seemed like Mary was often so well put together, and she always managed to stay so nice and had that beautiful smile with everything she went through. Marlene honestly looked up to the girl.

Dolores took a drag from the cigarette and held the smoke within her lungs until she couldn’t anymore and blew it out slowly as she pondered Marlene’s words. It was a joke if anyone thought that Hogwarts was adequately preparing its students for anything. She laughed, “Do you really believe that tripe? Half of the students don’t stand a chance once they leave the ‘safety’ of these walls and that’s the truth. They’re teaching us a dumbed down version of what we actually need to know. In what world do we need to know anything about Herbology in the real world?” She rolled her eyes and took a swig of the alcohol, “It’s bullshit.” 

“Alright, so maybe Herbology is bullshit, but I also suck at it, so I’m not a good person to ask,” Marlene let out a small laugh to herself. “Maybe if you think it’s a dumbed down version, you should go pick up some books from the library and do that ‘extra reading’ they’re always telling us about.” She took the bottle of alcohol and took another swig from it, starting to feel the tingling in her head from it. “There are also clubs for other things. Duelling club? You could try to learn more there. Not any curses, but Hogwarts isn’t exactly going to teach things that are illegal.”

With her soulmate, Marlene is looking forward to waking up beside them every morning, surprising them with little gifts every now and then, trying to cook for them but also failing miserably at it (but it’s the thought that counts, right?), them ending up cooking for her because everything she makes is trash. Them always smelling so nice, fighting for them, eating their fries. Cuddling and talking trash about them and everyone else.

Marlene is such a horrible romantic and refuses to let anyone know it. She’s embarrassed by it.

“Tell people to fuck off,” Sirius suggested, taking one last drag from his cigarette before stamping it out on the grass. He knew all too well what it was like for people to have expectations for how you should be or act when they spoke to you. Telling them to fuck off seemed like a perfectly good response to him. 

“How do you plan on enjoying it?” he asked, raising an eyebrow at her. While she had a good point, Sirius found it a lot harder to snap out of being broody than just deciding not to be broody any more. But Marlene was usually a good person to help get him out of his moods. He smiled ever so slightly when she rested her head on his shoulder, looking at the lake in front of them. He laughed slightly, “So you’re planning on avoiding all responsibilities by running away?” he teased.

“I’ll become the Gryffindor Bitch if I tell everyone that,” Marlene paused. “I think I’m actually already the Gryffindor Bitch...” She laughed. That’s what she got for trying to be straightforward with everyone who asked of her opinion. It was a title that she embraced. However, she mainly preferred it when ‘Badass’ was placed in front. 

Marlene shrugged. “The same way as always, I guess. Drinking, smoking, sex, sneaking around, and having late night conversations with mysterious men after curfew,” she smirked. “What else is there to do?” Marlene at least knew that these things would snap her out of her mood for the time being. Maybe not forever, but that was what a vacation after school was needed for. “I’m not going to avoid my responsibilities, Sirius. I might just handle them from far away for a couple of weeks. Like adults do.” She finished her cigarette off and flicked it into the grass. “But who knows if I’ll be able to do any of that, with everything going on.”

“What? You scared?” She asked, an amused but vindictive smirk upon her lips as the question left her mouth. Dolores wasn’t scared. She knew she believed in the right side. When you had the correct beliefs, you couldn’t go wrong. Right? She shook her head as she took another long swig from the bottle of firewhiskey, coughing slightly as it went down. “Honestly, I feel like this is all a waste of time. It’s not really preparing us for the real world. You really think students are gonna leave here and not get killed? It’s fantasy.” 

Marlene rolled her eyes and deeply inhaled the smoke from her cigarette. “There isn’t a person here that shouldn’t be scared,” she shrugged. “It’s a hellish world out there, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to face it head-on.” She knew what was going to happen when they left. Death for some was going to be inevitable. That was war. But they could try to save as many people as they could during the fight. That was why they fought. “It’s not their job here to train us to be soldiers. They’re giving us the resources we need to survive as long as we can. At least we aren’t in here only learning maths and reading like Muggle schools.”

Lily had never had much trouble sleeping in the past—in fact she often prided herself for her ability to fall asleep just about anywhere—but lately she seemed to be really struggling to fall into a comfortable sleep, so that’s how she found herself at the top of the Astronomy Tower just after midnight, sat cross legged behind the railing. It was late enough that she doubted anyone else would be out for a wander at this time, but that thought quickly vanished when she heard footsteps coming up the stairs beside her. Instinctively her fingers itched towards her wand which was currently tucked behind her ear as she turned to see who had joined her, “Curfew was more than three hours ago, how come you’re out of your common room so late?”

Marlene had stirred when Lily had, and was curious as to where her friend was going so late. Perhaps she should have given some sort of warning on her coming up, because she noted the girl tense up when she heard her. “Calm down, Lily. It’s just me. You’re not going to tell on me, are you?” she laughed, sitting down beside her. 

“After all, you’re out pretty late yourself,” Marlene pointed out. “I didn’t think you had rounds to make tonight.” She smiled and nudged Lily to show she was only joking. “So what’s up, babe? Are you alright?”
