Tonight, I lost a friend. "Bisan" is a 19 year old girl from gaza, she is a med student, her second year. She wanted to become a doctor ever since she was a child. Her favorite TV show was Anne with an E. She loved the quote: "My life is a graveyard for all my buried wishes". She always saved cats, she would bathe them and bring them food, she had the ability to love everything and forgive everyone. She wanted to live long enough to see her country freed, she wanted to be part of it. Tonight, Bisan has been killed alongside her whole family. I've only known her through social media and she left before we ever met. Before she became a doctor, before she had lived. Pray for my friend, Bisan, and her family. I am utterly devastated. I wish I had a chance to meet you before this, I wish you didn't leave too soon. Pray for gaza 🙏

My dear, when I tell you about hope, I want you to imagine the sweat dropping off Hajra’s عليه السلام skin as she insistently runs for water in the midst of the desert. I want you to feel the pain and the strength of a father like Ibrahim عليه السلام when he looked into his son’s eyes as a sacrifice to God;

Feel the betrayal in Yusuf عليه السلام’s heart when his own flesh and blood tossed him away like garbage.And the thick darkness inside a whale where Yunus عليه السلام resided, alone. 

I want you to picture the wide sea in front of your feet as Musa عليه السلام fled from the Pharaoh.And how terrified Asiyah عليه السلام must’ve been as she resisted her violent husband.

Scream, as Bilal’s رضي الله عنه bones get crushed while his mouth uttered the shahada ,And wonder how Rasul Allah ﷺ could still continue his path as blood was flowing down his head and soiled meat was thrown at him.

And maybe then when you see it all, feel it all, imagine it all, you would learn that thirst didn’t win over Hajra عليه السلام and Ismael عليه السلام, and Ismael عليه السلام wasn’t slayed. Neither did Yusuf عليه السلام end up unsuccessful and Yunus عليه السلام forgotten.

Musa عليه السلام and his people still crossed the sea, Bilal رضي الله عنه saved out of nowhere and Muhammad’s ﷺ mission is blooming like never before — Because my dear hope means not seeing an escape yourself, but knowing that Allah always does. “O you who believe! be patient and excel in patience and remain steadfast, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah, that you may be successful.” (3:200)

It was never a condition of walking to Allah that you walk to Him in a state of perfection. Walk to Him even with a lost heart, even with the weight of your sins, even with a tongue that stutters, and by Allah, if you walked to Him while you were loaded with burdens, He would accept you, for He loves you coming towards Him even if you crawled, so blessed are those who urged themselves towards the path, and know that the world is the farm (in which you cultivate your deeds) of the hereafter, and that the hereafter is better and more lasting!

It’s my request to you to not ask me how I have really been. Because if you are not prepared to take it, it will come crashing to you, my vulnerability. But if you say you are then here it is, I haven’t been well. I am tired and exhausted and every word that’s synonymous to the feeling of tiredness. I am tired of having so much hope in my heart about something that’s least likely to happen. I am tired of not knowing from where this hope comes from, from where it starts and where it ends. I am tired of not knowing what’s gonna happen. I am tired of the struggle my everyday life has become. I am tired. I am tired of waking up everyday and pretending as if I am not hurting inside with this lamp that’s burning inside me. I want you to end this misery for me. Tell me that you like someone else, that you have been praying for someone else. Tell me that from the last moment we spoke, you haven’t thought about me, ever. And even if you did you thought of how it was over. That I was out of your life for good. Tell me that you haven’t felt even a sliver of what I have felt for you. Tell me that it’s not only impossible but it is you who don’t want it to happen at all because you don’t like me that way and that I am not what you want. Break my heart, shatter into pieces and stomp over it and walk away…perhaps then in the healing of it all, the healing will come.
