I loved putting this song and this painting together so so much because the artist (Artemisia Gentileschi) was a complete badass. She was a remarkably talented artist from a young age and was the first woman inducted into Florence’s prestigious Academy of the Arts of Drawing; 94% of her works featured women as the protagonists or as equal to men, which was rare for her time. She was sexually assaulted by her mentor and, much like Taylor - the trial and publicity surrounding this completely overshadowed who she was as a person and artist. What makes this painting incredible is that she channeled her rage and feelings of betrayal from the situation into this painting (a story from the Catholic book of Judith) - she painted herself as Judith, and her mentor as Holofernes.
