He didn't notice it at first. It was a slow build up, like a frog in a pot of boiling water, until it all bubbled over.
He fell asleep at the table in front of his typewriter again, and when he woke up, his myriad of empty cups were gone and there was a glass of water waiting for him along with a bottle of ibuprofen.
Wirman didn't really know how to process such... Tenderness. He figured dirk had been micro dosing him on it for weeks now, he had to have been. The more he thought about it, the more sense it made. The little snacks, the tidying up after him, the just sitting with him as he wrote. He swallowed hard, his heart beginning to pound in his chest.
What was this? What was Dirk's game? His edge? The catch? It just didn't make sense. It felt like more than just his usual caring. There had to be some kind of alternative motive. He picked up the bottle of pills and stared at it. He had to admit, his head did hurt.
"Hey, Wirmo!"
Wirman jumped, too lost in his own thoughts to realize dirk had apparently come into the kitchen. As he passed him, he reached out and patted him twice on the shoulder.
"Sleep well?" Dirk asked, like it was nothing.
Wirman couldn't help the urge to want that touch to linger. He knew he was sweating, he was sure of it as he watched dirk prepare his lunch. He didn't say anything as the man worked, eyes tracing up and down Dirk's back.
"Do you want any?"
Wirman tried not to grind his teeth. There had to be a catch, "No, I'm not hungry."
"Cmonnnn," Dirk teased, "It's really good I PROMISE. Just try a bite."
"What harm could one bite of a slice of warmed over pizza do?" Wirman thought to himself after briefly mulling it over. If there was a catch, it was better dirk not realize he was catching on, anyways.
"Fine," Wirman said as he took a single bite, only for the second the flavors crossed his tongue for his stomach to growl.
Dirk chuckled, "I'll heat some up for you too."
Now Wirman knew he was sweating, how long had dirk been doing this? Feeding him small bites to wet his appetite only to give him a meal. Dirk usually WAS the one that cooked after all... The more Wirman thought about it, the more he realized he hadn't been skipping meals like he used to.
He tried to play it cool, he really did. But he just couldn't. Not when he LIVED with Dirk. Besides, shouldn't he grace him with a proper conversation on the matter?
"What are you doing?" Wirman asked him, his tone accusatory.
"What do you mean?" Dirk responded, clearly not getting it.
"You've been doing... THIS for who knows how long? What's the catch?"
The microwave dinged and dirk grabbed out the plate, handing it to Wirman.
"What? Don't try and dodge this, you need your strength to write," dirk teased.
No matter how hard he tried, Wirman couldn't seem to wrap his head around what he was feeling.
With a sign, Wirman took the plate, "I'm serious! You've been acting... Strange."
Dirk grinned sheepishly, "Aw, man, I'm sorry. I guess you uh... Finally caught me."
"C- caught you doing WHAT?!"
Wirman could feel himself getting himself worked up no matter how hard he tried to control himself. Dirk was basically his only friend, what on earth was he doing, going and trying to hurt him like this-.
"I have to admit," Dirk's voice cut off Wirman's thoughts, "You're pretty cute. It's hard not to spoil you."
"Pardon."
It was like time stopped, the world screeching to a halt as they both stood there in the kitchen together. Was this... No, there was no way... But it had to be, it was the only thing that made sense. Did dirk... LIKE him??
The gears were turning in his head and he knew it was as plain as day across his face. Before he could speak, Dirk continued.
"Sorry, dude. I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable or anything."
Wirman's eyes snapped up to dirks, and he was immediately sucked into them. It was like his blood was singing.
"I... Don't understand," Wirman mumbled out to him.
"I like you, sorry," dirk chuckled, nervously rubbing the back of his neck.
"You... Like... ME?"
"Yeah? I thought it was obvious."
As the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20. And hindsight made everything as clear as day. The little gestures, the patience, the care, the understanding, the knowing Wirman like the back of his hand...
"I..." Wirman couldn't seem to get the words out, his mind thinking a million thoughts but none of them coming out in words.
This was foreign territory. These thoughts, these feelings, this... Pull he felt in his joints to step closer. To close the gap between them.
"I... Don't know what I feel," Wirman said, honesty in his voice.
"It's okay, you don't have to know. I can be patient."
Dirk could be patient... So, Wirman decided to extend an olive branch.
"We can sit at the table and eat," Wirman offered.
visually, Wirman reminds me of Maxwell .. Also the fact that the name we use for him starts with a W.

And uh..
If i had a nickel every time a character that felt unsatisfied with life (that is also a very obnoxious seller) hears the voice/information from an eldritch being that causes them to go insane and betray their partner, i’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that its happened twice
So hey i just realized something. While drawing Mortuga
Why do they .. Kind of match pants? Stripped, has a strap/long and thin cloth hanging from the hip. Very interesting.
i also noticed something else.
If we look at the colours of the trio here, you’ll notice that Felicia’s colours are opposite to Mortuga and Godrik’s.
Felicia: Green-Yellow-Orange
Godrik and Mortuga: Purple, blue and pink (with hints of yellow).
something about Godrik and Mortuga not truly knowing or agreeing with seeking out the Mermaid, having a certain “disconnection” to Felicia’s family history, being brought out with their colours, opposite to Felicia’s. Felicia being the only one to wear the Mermaid’s Tongue on that voyage… Idk, it’s interesting to me.
wanted to make a proper list of all their parallels that i could pick up on. it's honestly really cool how much thought was put into their designs
gripp is also a lot more squishy, while mortuga is more angular. likely symbolizing gripp's self imposed weakness (mentally and physically) as well as his envy towards mortuga's capabilities and physique
also worth noting that mortuga's arms are considerably more rounded compared to the rest of his design
Gripping your shoulders very tightly. Fucking exactly. EXACTLY!!! I’m sleep deprived so my brain is extremely slow but that’s exactly it. Mortuga’s arms are bigger whereas Godrik wears thick/poofier pants, but we all know he isn’t actually all that big. Like you said, it’s likely all part of how he was always the “weaker man”, and it’s shown with how he succumbs to the mermaid’s influence. Mortuga is everything Godrik wishes he was.
Like just, even just The Story itself. Godrik and Mortuga both lie to each other. They’re both after “Her”, they’ve both drastically & permanently changed. They’re parallels in every way. And honestly the fact that both of their face shapes resemble the Mermaid’s Tongue is horrible, because they truly are haunted by that cursed thing in every way.
… and yet their environment of people & how they behave drastically puts them on opposites. How Mortuga and Godrik handled their problems post-voyage is what truly sets them apart, as well as their relationships with the other crew members. In this essay i w
