Week 7: Searching for an Interview!!

This weeks assignment was to stalk a professor who can help me with my topic.

My major is Criminal Justice and that lands on the college of:

Now that i have shown you my major and the college i belong to now is time to show you mu academic stalking!!

My first choice was Dr. Jeff Rojek because i really think he can be a very helpful source for my assignment because he once was a police officer and also because his primary area of study is Police officer. another reason is because he is currently one of my professors for my police systems class.

My second choice was Dr. Theodore Curry because his research deals with race or ethnicity and that could be really helpful to me since my topic is ethnic diversity in the law enforcement field.

My third choice was Dr. Micheal R. Smith because of what he has done and he has researched. it was hard choosing my third professor because i really couldn’t relate him with my topic but after reading all the thing he has research on i think he can be a very good interviewee for my assignment.

Creating Research Questions

Here is the draft for my six questions:

I then proceeded to go to the writing center so i could get help on my questions:

1) This question is important because I want to know if diversity really exist and once I find the answer I can know what are the things that could change for example the policies. What I hope to achieve from this question is to find out if there is really ethnic diversity in the Law Enforcement field.

2)This question is important because it will prove the exact definition of what diversity of Ethnicities in the Law Enforcement field mean. What I hope to achieve from this question is to find what is the most suitable definition for Ethnic diversity on Law Enforcement.

3)This question is important because if you don’t have ethnic diversity on the Law Enforcement field that would mean that there would be less people from the minorities working in that specific field and more people form one specific ethnicity (whites) working with a lot  of different ethicities of civilians and they wouldn’t be able to connect or understand each other. What I hope to achieve from this question is to find out how ethnic diversity shapes the work habits of Law Enforcement.

4) This question is important because minorities can face many challenges in the Law Enforcement field. What I hope to achieve from this questions is to find out which are the specific challenges faced by minorities in the Law enforcement field.

5) This question is important because it can analyse what benefits can come out of this specific topic. What I hope to achieve out of this questions is to see how beneficial having ethnic diversity in the Law Enforcement can be towards the United States or even the Law Enforcement field itself.

6) This questions is important because you can see what are the things that you can get out of the policies and how they can encourage or discourage employees or potential employees.. What I hope to achieve out of this questions is to see what these policies content have that are making minorities not wanting to join the Law Enforcement field.

Diversity of Ethnicity on the Law Enforcement field

I chose to elaborate on the audience and purpose because i think that it is important for the community to know what type of audience the author wants to reach out the most and what is the main purpose of this genres.

The first genre that i chose is an article that talks about the increasing numbers on the population of different ethnicities on the Law Enforcement field. The author seems to want to attract audience that speak English as well as people who are around the college level age (8-25) and above because all this information can be used as informative purposes so that they can use this info to get it in a research paper that they are doing. The author might also want to persuade the people from the different races talked about to be more willing to get in to the Law Enforcement field so that they can help their ethnicity have more and more people working on that field so that they can feel that they have more equality among all those people who work as Law Enforcement Officer.

The second genre that I chose is a image that show bar graphs with different information and numbers that represent the numbers of the ethnicities and gender. the audience intended for this genre is educated people who can read in english and can also read bar graphs. This bar graph can be used as an informative source as well as a persuasive source. It can be a persuasive source because there is races that are shown in the graph that don’t even make 10 percent of the total population of the total people in the FBI. It can also be a persuasive source to women because women don’t even make up one third of all the population of the FBI agents so that may work as encouragement to them to become a special agent.

These two genres can be very helpful sources because they both inform you about how diverse being in the Law Enforcement field is and they both have very limited information but they both get to the point very quickly by not making people get bored with many different information. The only difference is that on the article they talk about how the population in the Law Enforcement field regarding the ethnicity have increased while in the bar graph the numbers shown have very little amount for many minorities.

WEEK 2: Choosing Genres

The genre that I chose is structured first by showing a picture of a police officer and right below it there is a statement which says that racial profiling is destroying our community. Then the article starts by talking about a movement called #BlackLivesMatter and followed up by the case of Eric Garner and then information of racial profiling. This helps the author convey people because as soon as they open the article the audience will see the picture of the police officer and then the racial profiling statement. This helps by making people concentrate on what the real issue, which is the law enforcement using their power and racially profiling innocent people just for the color of their skin. There is only one visual in this article/genre which is the picture of the police but there are also a lot of quick links that can help get more information about the racial profiling topic. 

The intended audience for the article/genre that I chose is the African Americans. The purpose of the information shown in this article is to persuade people to help and stop racial profiling but it is also to inform the general public on how bad black people are treated. The author of this article is not only trying to convince black people to take matter on the situation of racial profiling but the author is also trying to convince the general public to realize that every person can be a victim of racial profiling so the author wants people to help and stop this issue. 

How this genre helps establish the credibility of the information is by seeing that it was written by Ranjana Natarajan who is a clinical professor and director of the Civil Rights Clinic at The University of Texas School of Law and was published by The Washington Post. This genre helps to evoke the feeling of the audience because of the facts that it was written to inform and it helps bring sadness towards the African American community and hatred towards law enforcement. One of the evidence shown in this article/genre has is that it mentions the case of a black male named Eric Garner who was pulled to the ground and was choked to death.

Introduction: Week 1

Hi my name is Alexander Romo Narvaez, and I was born on January 28, 1996. I was born here in El Paso and I am love my city, there is no other place like El Paso, there is no place like home.

But as I love El Paso I also love Ciudad Juarez becasue it has a lot of meaning to me since most of my family lives in Juarez, including two of my most important people in my life my grandparents. 

I am a very athletic person and i like to play all the sports. I played football, soccer, basketball, and track, but football is my favorite sport and its the sport I can play the best. I played all these sports when I was in middle school, but once I got into High School I only played two sports, track and football. I attended Bowie High School were I played all of my fours years. When i was a freshmen I was listed as one of the best running backs in the district. That helped me get on the varsity squad in my sophomore year were I played most of the time in the linebacker position and very little at running back, but once again I was named one of the best linebackers in the district. My junior and senior year were my best football years but senior year was by far the best one. I was chosen for the All-Star game which is only played by the best seniors of the city and I was also named one of the best running back in the city. Senior year was not only the best for me but also for my school because for the first time in 20 years we won a Bi-District championship. The picture below is a picture of me playing in the championship against Parkland High School.

My favorite football team is the Dallas Cowboys.

And I Know its weird but my favorite player is Cam Newton!!!

It is also weird that I like football so much because i started playing soccer when I was only five years old, I always thought that I was going to be a soccer player all my life but then football came and it all changed. Anyway I still like soccer I even play in a co-ed team named Avengers. My favorite soccer team is none other them the best Barcelona.

And my favorite player is....

Yeah that’s right the best player in the world Leo Messi. 

Even though Barcelona is my favorite team my national team is USA, and my favorite player is Clint Dempsey.

I started going to school at the age of five and started at Zavala Elementary located on southside El Paso, I was at Zavala for only two, pre-k and kinder I then changed to Beall Elementary, and I stayed there from first grade till fifth grade. I then attended Guillen Middle School and there is when I was introduced to football. Three years latter I found my self as a Freshmen in Bowie High School where I spent four of the best years of my life playing football and meeting good people and teachers that also became friends over the years.

As of right know I am starting my third year at the University of Texas of El Paso where I plan to get a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice.

After I graduate from UTEP I plan to work either in Customs or in Police Department. Ever since I was little I always dreamed at being part of one of those two but I think I prefer to work in Customs because is a federal agency and it has better benefits.

I am looking forward on being on the 1302 RWS so that I can better my vocabulary as well as my writing style and I’m looking forward on meeting new people and a new professor like you Professor Audrey Cisneros.
