Ian couldn’t help the groan that came from him. Sure, he was trying to be nice and he knew Delaney was doing her best as well, but he couldn’t help but feel agitated. “Are you sure? You want to like be together and everything? Are you ready to have to like, take care of a kid? And you’re ready to fuckin’ commit and be a team?” He wasn’t trying to be harsh, but Ian was known to lose his temper fairly quickly - he couldn’t help it. “Because you’re not really wanting to compromise to shit.” Something as simple as quitting her job shouldn’t have meant so much to Ian, but he didn’t know what else to think. Was she wanting to continue working to hide money for some kind of backup plan or something? “I just don’t get why you’re being so damn stubborn, Laney. I’m trying to help you - I’m trying to show you theres more than just working your ass off at a place that doesn’t give a fuck about you.” He wasn’t referring to himself, of course, but he knew Gabe thought of the entirety of the staff as replaceable. That’s just the way it was. Anyone could sort and package drugs, there weren’t many qualifications required. “The last thing I want right now is to fuck, dude.” Really, the mood had been ruined for him, but that was his own fault, which he was aware of. “I don’t care, really. Just - don’t fucking play with me, okay? Either you want the same things and we’re going to compromise, or you don’t.”Â
In the entirety of knowing Ian, Laney hadn’t really seen him too angry. Sure she’d been present when he had to rip it into some worker who wasn’t pulling their weight, but apart from that things had been pretty cruisey. When he started to question her intentions again, making it feel like she was part of the problem, the girl couldn’t help but feel a lump in the back of her throat forming. It wasn’t her goal to mess everything up or make him upset, if anything it felt like what she was trying to explain to him was getting mis-interpreted. “Why’re you getting so mad with me?” The girl was quick to get off his lap, the mood no longer there for her either. In all honesty she was feeling quite embarrassed. She wanted nothing more than to just hide somewhere and pull everything she’d put out into the universe back into her. “I’m not playing with you, I just - you expect me to give that all up in one day when I haven’t even moved my crap in or done anything.” Though she wasn’t aware in the moment, tears had already beyond welled up, some angry and some a mixture of sadness too. “I want to be a team, but that doesn’t mean you’ve got to baby me, or that I don’t deserve a minute to figure out what to do with myself.” Delaney quickly wiped her face, feeling embarrassed she’d even started crying in the first place. “You’ve got to compromise and realise I want to take care of you too, Ian. You don’t owe it to the world to be the one holding everything together.”Â

Ian mulled the thought over for a few moments, before shaking his head. “I don’t want you to.” Sure, he was being stubborn, but he truly wanted her to chill out and take some time for herself. She’d said it herself, she only knew working, and Ian didn’t like that fact. It wasn’t fair to her, and Ian wanted to show her there was more than just working and struggling to survive. “Don’t worry about my kid.” He didn’t want to come off as rude, but Ian didn’t like being questioned - not about money. “He’s mine. You don’t have to worry about him. Sure, if you want to babysit I’m not going to stop you. But, really, I’ve got it. Trust me, I pay his fuckin’ mother out quite a god damn bit.” He cleared his throat, trying not to get too heated about the topic at hand. There were plenty of things he wished he could change about the entire situation with Matt’s mother, but he wasn’t about to get into it. “You could just sit around, I guess. Or if you wanted to pick up a hobby, you could. I don’t fucking know,” he shrugged. “We can get a dog or something.” Realistically, Ian didn’t care what she did or when or how long. He just wanted her to be happy, and taken care of. “I do understand that,” he groaned, pulling her in at the waist. Even though she was becoming angry, Ian didn’t want to spoil the mood. He was high and relaxed, and unfortunately counting down the moments until his son woke from his nap. “Don’t argue. Just do whatever the fuck you want. I’m trying to help you. I’m trying to be nice, or whatever the fuck. Do what you want.” Ian didn’t know how to truly be nice, or at least he couldn’t grasp the concept. It’d been hard for him for as long as he could remember, he couldn’t really help it.Â
Getting Ian to this place of honesty and openness felt like it took a life time, so the last thing Delaney wanted was to screw it all up by making their disagreement even worse. It took her a moment, but Delaney swallowed her pride and started to give in. “I’ll spend the night, let you go down on me - whatever you want - if we can figure it out in the morning.” Letting her hands move back to the boys neck, she rubbed at the skin there briefly. “I came here maybe expecting some food and a good time I - admitting all these things is a lot in itself, and I know it is for you too.” Offering a small smile, Delaney chewed her lip. “I’m trying not to screw things up, because I really do want - the whole package.” She leaned down then, placing another small kiss to his lips, well aware that the mood might’ve been ruined, but she wanted Ian to know she was still there and still wanted him. “You’re being really nice and generous. I love that. I’ve - never had that.” Delaney shrugged her shoulders. “Last person I roomed with I helped sell stuff to repay them.” It wasn’t a pretty thing to admit, but Delaney did what she could to have a roof over her head. “I know this’s more than rooming though, so - I’m sorry I bit your head off. I’m horny and a little nervous.” It sounded dorky saying that out loud, which cause blush to flush the girls cheeks. “I feel like I’ve been butting heads with you in more ways than one.”Â

Ian rolled his eyes at her argument, followed by a shake of the head. Realistically, he didn’t need help from her, he was making it by just fine on his own. At this point, the male had bundles and bundles of cash in his safe, ready in case of an emergency. He didn’t need any contributions, and he didn’t need Laney to worry about something as stupid as rent at his home. Sure, at that point, it would be theirs, but it wasn’t like she’d hand picked the place herself. It wasn’t the cheapest place around, and Ian didn’t expect her to pay for something that she didn’t sign up for. At the time, Ian had just started off, and he was simply throwing money around, not used to having disposable income. “No,” he argued - another shake of the head. “I don’t care that you have a job. I’m already paying mortgage, even if you said no, I would still be paying the mortgage. I’ve got it.” Ian felt pretty strongly about the topic, although he didn’t really feel like arguing with her. If anything, he’d end up accepting her money and putting it in the safe, to build some kind of savings for her. He figured she didn’t really have much left over after her expenses to put much away. “A couple,” he smiled, his forehead pressed against her own, an unfaltering smile on his face. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt such a way about someone, nor could be remember the last time he was actually excited to be tied down. Except, with Laney, he didn’t feel tied down - he felt empowered and stronger than ever. He loved the way she made him feel, not sure why but he wasn’t going to fight it, nor question it. He’d done enough of that in the earlier years of his life, and it only diminished relationships faster. “Baby,” he sighed, his lips pressing against hers for a brief moment, before pulling away, his forehead remained against hers. “I don’t care about that shit. About money or whatever. I just want you. Actually,” he cleared his throat, knowing what he was about to say wouldn’t sit well with the female. “I’d prefer if you quit. I want to take care of you.”Â
It was pointless arguing about it with Ian, Delaney knew that. But it was hard for her not to. He was pushing all of these buttons that she didn’t even know she had, mostly because no one had ever bothered to try with her. Things like living together, or having a future together had never happened for Delaney. This was all new to her, and as scary as it seemed she was trying not to look like a deer in the headlights. Ian was more mature than anyone else she’d been with in this way. Despite the money and job title he had, he seemed to handle it well. When Delaney arrived in town, she’d no idea where she was headed. She simply never had. Retirement plans, settling down - those had all been distant dreams. Nothing that seemed attainable. “Can I pay for anything then?” She chewed her lip slightly, not wanting to push it even further. Laney knew she was acting like a brat, trying to get a compromise, but it was what she was used to. “You’ve got Matthew to pay for too, I’m just thinking of him.” It wasn’t a lie, she knew kids weren’t cheap. And the last thing she wanted was to come in and ruin that for a kid that couldn’t yet provide for themselves. Ian was a great father, she didn’t want that to change. At the prospect of quitting her job, Delaney swallowed. Working had been all she’d known, she never had time to do anything else, it almost seemed abnormal. “What would I do then? Just sit around here?” She didn’t mean to come off so defensive, but it was an idea she’d never really thought of. Delaney had always been busy in some aspect, whether it was work or finding a place to stay, or packing and moving for a new town. “I don’t really - know anything else except work, Ian. I thought you’d understand that.”Â

It almost made the male feel bad that she was apologizing, his intention not to make her feel bad about anything. If she wanted something different, that was fine, he was just tired of putting himself last, like he had in so many other relationships. He had a child to consider now, he had to put the little boy first in every situation, including the company he kept. Delaney seemed like she did well enough around Matthew, though he hadn’t really seen the two interact one on one quite yet. Ian was happy that she was back to kissing him, happy that he hadn’t pissed her off all that much. He related to her words, knowing that fucking around was much easier. No strings attached was easiest - you didn’t have to answer to anyone, and you could make your own rules. But, Ian didn’t want that any more. In a way, he craved being married. And oddly enough, he wanted to be tied down with someone to take care of he and his son He wanted rules and a stupid curfew that would only end up pissing him off in the long run. He just hoped she’d end up wanting the same. “Really?” In all honesty, he wasn’t expecting Laney to give in all that easily, kind of assuming she was stuck on wanting something without commitment. “Babe,” he sighed, his hand cupping her cheek. “Thank you, really. I just… I need shit to be stable now. Like, if Matt wasn’t here - I don’t think I would give a fuck, but I just - I don’t want people coming into his life and then just disappearing.” Ian knew first hand how traumatizing it could be to lose someone important in your life, and how confusing it was when they showed up again. He wasn’t asking Laney to step in as his mother or anything of the sort, he just wanted stability, like he said. “Move in?” His question came out quickly, almost too fast for him to weigh the pros and cons of having Laney living in his home. “You - There’s no reason you should be paying for rent. Because I’m just going to want you here all the fucking time. Please.”Â
Was Delaney nervous? Of course she was. Settling down wasn’t really something she’d done since she left home. And when she’d arrived into town, Delaney avoided any long term contracts and picked a job that would give her more skills for other opportunities. What made her the most nervous was Ian’s son. She never really saw herself in a mom role, but mostly because of the fact she didn’t feel she had any good examples to go by. Did she want a family? Of course. But the last thing she wanted to do was mess up Ian’s son, who he already had with another girl. And what if this girl didn’t want her around their son? How would she handle that? Delaney would always put Ian and the young boy first, so without a question she wouldn’t be comfortable sticking around then. She tried to push those thoughts away though and focused on the male in front of her. The girl nodded and offered him another small smile. “Please don’t sound so surprised I - want more than just moving from town to town, leaving behind people.” When the question of moving in came up, Delaney was more taken aback. Blush flushed her cheeks and Delaney chewed her lip. “I don’t want you thinking you’ve to pay for everything for me now. I can contribute to rent and bills and everything - I’ve got a job too.” She didn’t mean to sound defensive, but after taking care of herself for so long, Delaney wasn’t used to people picking up after her. “If I do, please let me still do that. Like - contribute, as a part of a couple.” Saying that out loud made Delaney happy, and she hoped that her request would be respected. If Ian wanted to take care of her, she knew that he could do that in many other ways. He already made her feel loved and wanted, that was all she’d ever needed.Â

When Delaney started going on about hook-ups being easiest, he kind of got nervous. He’d lived that life, he’d already had his fun, and now with a child, Ian was ready to fully settle down. He wanted someone that Matthew would be able to grow up with, someone that would be accepting of his child and someone who wouldn’t mind having another child with him. Someone he could take to Thanksgiving with Harley and his family. The last thing Ian needed was just another person to fuck around with - it just wasn’t something he wanted anymore. “Don’t fuck with me like that.” he laughed quietly, his hand still rubbing against her pale skin. Sure, Ian had a hard reputation, mostly since he worked closely with Gabriel, but the male hadn’t done anything too horrible since he’d moved out of his hometown. Sure, drugs weren’t exactly innocent, but it wasn’t like Ian was going around breaking fingers or beating people with bats. Hell, he hadn’t even been in a fight since high school. He’d changed, and even though Delaney didn’t know him back then, it kind of made him feel like she thought of him as he was a teenager. “I want a family,” he admitted, his voice soft and gruff. “I want to live on a boring suburban cul-de-sac. I want to help coach my kid’s baseball team. I want to take care of my wife and kids.” He cleared his throat, shaking his head. It wasn’t necessarily hard to talk about, but Ian had never actually shared these feelings with another female before. Actually, the only person he’d communicated these feelings to were Harley, and even that was kind of hard to do. “I want to get married and shit.” He shrugged his shoulders, before tapping at her skin. “If you want a hookup,” he sighed, almost regretting what he was about to say. “If you want just a hookup, I don’t want to do this. We can just smoke and chill or whatever, but I fucking like you. And I’m just going to keep chasing after you and expecting you to want the same shit. Sorry.” Ian finally looked up at her, offering eye contact. “I know it’s fucking lame of me, but really. I’m tired of fucking around.”Â
With Ian’s kid not in the room, it sometimes made Delaney forget that fatherhood was a part of his life already. She’d never really met anyone else, especially anyone his age, who’d already had a kid in their life. Most of the people she met had partners at the very least, but that next step was further away for them than most people. He seemed to get a bit more quiet as she spoke, which Delaney was grateful for, but also hoped that she hadn’t said anything wrong. Sometimes picking her words was a hard feat for Delaney, so she hoped if she had said something wrong she could back track from it. What Delaney wasn’t expecting though was for Ian to admit his feelings. She figured things were more buried down for him than they were for her. Maybe that was a stereotypical thing for her to be thinking, but it was true. Looking at Ian, and how they had communicated in the past, Delaney always figured that she’d have to work much harder to get anything out of him. The brutality of it almost took Delaney aback, chewing her lip as she listened to him. His genuineness, rawness - Delaney loved that. The girl was almost at a loss for what to say, as nothing she could come up with would even match that. “Ian I - I’m sorry.” It took a lot for Delaney to apologise, but the last thing she wanted was for him to think she was just using him as a toy, or that she didn’t care about his feelings. The girl leaned down and pressed their lips together again, this time the kiss slower than the others and with a longer period of contact. When she pulled back, Delaney kept their foreheads together, being able to feel his breath against her own. “It’s not lame. Fucking around seemed easier at first, but that’s only because sticking around is kinda new for me, too.” She nuzzled his nose. “But then - your words, not mine - I started to really fucking like you, too.” Delaney pressed another kiss to his lips and rubbed his side. “So I want this properly. No messing around.”

In all honesty, Ian didn’t really listen to much of the chatter that filled the warehouse. Sure, he’d catch snippets of gossip here and there, mostly just gory stories about things Gabriel had apparently done. Some of them true, most of them not. But, Ian hadn’t heard anything floating around about Laney, at least nothing that had been interesting enough to catch his attention. Ian noticed she was the type to lay low and stay out of the way, which as her boss, was nice. “Guess I’ll have to start listening to what they’ve got to say about you. See what my competition is.” He was joking, of course, fully knowing there wasn’t much for him to compete with in the first place. He knew he had good looks and his spot on the totem pole only helped the cause.Â
When Delaney started to become more assertive, Ian was somewhat shocked. He was usually the one in the driver’s seat when it came to relationships, whether they were platonic or not. He liked it that way, as it was comfortable and he always knew what was coming next. This was different - it almost scared him. Ian bit at his lip as he stared up at her, his hands were quick to start exploring; they started at her thighs, softly caressing the skin before moving up towards her hips and waist. The male ran his hands up her ribcage. letting them stop at the start of her bra. He didn’t want to push his luck, and with Laney, he knew it was going to begin running thin. “I guess,” his voice was quiet, fully knowing she was correct. Most of the time, Ian shot a smile at his suitor and that was it. Things were typically that easy for him. Laney had built a wall and it seemed like every time he’d knocked down a brick, two more had been added. He knew it wasn’t her fault though, so he couldn’t bring himself to become frustrated over it. “I’m just a fuck to you?” He let out a laugh, his head turning slightly to kiss at the hand that was toying with his hair. He knew she was bluffing, but the whole thing was kind of amusing to him. “Fine. I guess I’ll have to give it to you and show you what you’ve been missing. And then what? You never talk to me again? Or you keep coming back for more?” He was interested to see what would end up happening between them after they’d finally given in to their urges. Admittedly, Ian’s breath caught in his throat when she’d removed her top, as he wasn’t expecting it. He knew eventually the time would come, but she’d caught him off guard. “God,” he mumbled, his hands only continuing to explore the newly exposed skin. “What do you want?”Â
It was funny how when Delaney typically met up with guys or had hook ups that they assumed she would roll over like a puppy dog, and beg to be petted. Sure, she could from time to time, and that could be hot, but Delaney was more than just a pretty face and she knew that. Sometimes it was nice for her to remind the person she was with that the upper hand could easily be hers. And knowing that Ian usually had his way like that made it even easier for her to do so. She was eager to prove that they would be different, that she wasn’t just going to be like any other girl he had been with. Delaney felt like she had to in order to avoid this being a colossal disaster. If it did blow up in her face, then so be it. Would it make it hard for her to be around him? Delaney wasn’t sure. She was so used to cutting her loses and moving on that she hadn’t though what she’d do it thing’s didn’t pan out the way she expected them to. Which was why she was trying to go into it with zero expectations.Â
Him going quiet only reiterated to Delaney what she already knew, that almost bringing a smile to her face. “There’s no guessing in this really, I’ve just -- observed, to say the least.” She was being honest, that was all she had done. Delaney didn’t need to gossip with girls or dig up on his background. She’d been there long enough to be able to see how things usually went with Ian, and that made her almost a bit sad. Everyone was worthy of having something good in their life, Delaney had always thought that. No matter how things had been for her growing up, she always tried to believe there were better things out there. It was why she had countless jobs and lived in a number of places. If something didn’t work out for her, she moved onto the next plan. Eventually she’d like to settle down of course. A life where she didn’t have to constantly be on the move was the ideal. Of course she didn’t admit that to just anyone, Ian might have been the exception eventually. “I’ve done that before. A casual thing’s sometimes the best even.” Delaney didn’t want to hide that, she valued being honest and with Ian it came naturally. She’d rather be on the same page with someone than ten chapters behind. “I want something more than a fling, if sticking around here’s worth it.” Delaney rubbed his neck a little and tilted her head. “Could you be?”Â
