For everyone who ‘used to love reading’ but now hasn’t finished a book in years, you CAN get it back. Genuinely start bringing a book (preferably short and either fiction or a non fiction topic you already really enjoy) everywhere you go and when you have 5-20 mins waiting for the bus or at the doctors office or mechanic or whatever, get out your book and read it! You don’t have to finish it quickly or even read it often but it is so good for your brain and fun to get into the habit of reading more (and replacing being on your phone for those moments). Source: I read 0 books in 2023 and I’ve read 12 in the first 4 months of 2026
When I was in uni my housemates had a baby, and we taught them some sign language so they could communicate before all their mouth parts were coordinated yet. None of us knew Auslan but two of us were familiar with the signs that the State Emergency Services used in the field so we worked with those.
The kid learned to request a drink, which is great, because that's like the #1 most important thing for a baby to be able to request, but instead of learning any of the other signs they just used modified versions of the drink sign to ask for all kinds of things. They couldn't actually make the proper drink sign (it requires some level of hand control) and used a modified wave, so they ended up with a whole bunch of subtly different waves to ask for stuff. Which was pretty fun in public because strangers would coo over this adorable baby who kept waving at them when, in practice, the baby wanted their ice cream.
Our kid used the "milk" sign for any and every liquid, including Lake Huron. We went to Mackinac when they were a toddler, they looked over the edge of the ferry and got so hyped up yelling "wa-juice! Wa-juice!" (Everything was either water or juice at this point in their life) and signing about it. Didn't know what to make of the waves.
My friend's baby also learned some simplified baby AUSLAN and he would sign GIVE at whatever he wanted. Your lunch. Passing birds. The book he just handed you. Just at you, when he wanted attention. The time he demanded *the wind* was perplexing.
I used to have a baby in my class who, any time we had a car go by the classroom window, would watch it go by and then look at me expectantly and start signing "more? more? more?" and pointing at the window. It was adorable, and sweet that he thought I was that powerful, but unfortunately I couldn't make more cars go by for him.

When I was training to be a paramedic, we had one student ask the instructor what to do in the event of a marijuana overdose. The instructor said "Tell him to take two twinkies and call you in the morning."
Okay, there's a good reason for this though!
If the Please Do Not Eat That Professional thinks it's inconsequential enough to be funny, then the concerned caller knows it's no big deal. When I was a kid my mom called poison control because I ate not one but several crayons, and their advice was to make sure I didn't stray too far from a toilet for a few hours because suppositories are made of wax, too.
Also several years ago I ate half a sandwich while wondering why the hell it tasted so funny only to realize the Goo Gone I'd been cleaning with was leaking, and did so onto my sandwich. Poison Control now has an online form where you can put in what you ingested/how much/when/etc. and someone basically triages those out, so the kid who just drank a bunch of drain cleaner isn't in line behind the kid who ate a crayon. I got a call like twenty minutes later from a nurse who told me I was fine.
Oh! And if you want to know what the tool looks like, it now gives a "this is not a real case" option to let you test it out, so I became a hypothetical worried patient who accidentally took 1000mg of ibuprofen (max dose should be 800) instead of 1000mg of acetaminophen (which has a max dose of 1000) and ran the entire thing. It took me less than two minutes from this:

So what if it's a serious problem? Suddenly, hypothetical Nina was cleaning xir bathroom sink and got hit with some Drano splashback with xir eyes and mouth open! Here's what the tool suggested. As soon as I selected that I'd gotten Drano in my eyes, this popped up:

So I selected the option that says I'd attempted self-harm, and this popped up. (I didn't get it in the screenshot, but there's a drawing of a sad snail at the top of the screen. I think it's supposed to remind you someone is there, this just isn't the best route to reach them.)
The tool covers literally thousands of substances, and it's fast to use. It'll ask your age, assigned sex at birth, what you were exposed to, how (ate/drank it, breathed it in, got it in your eyes, etc.), how much you were exposed to, how long ago, whether you notice any symptoms, and what zip code you're in. That's it, and it's right here if you need it, and as they told me when I said I felt dumb over my Goo Gone-ified sandwich, they'd rather I check and be fine than not check because I "felt silly" and end up dead.

I'm also mad at myself for not accepting assistance on another medication. to be fair, I was in a better financial spot when I started it, but also I think my too-literal brain interpreted the question as "would your card bounce if you tried to pay for this?" and not "would you benefit from aid?"
the literalism was also a problem when I was applying for aid for the Cosentyx, because the person organizing my case had to first check off that everything else had been tried before resorting to a biologic immunosuppressant. and one of their questions was "have you tried taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatories (like Advil) to solve the problem?" and I answered no, because I was in pain every minute of every day, and if I was just popping Advils like Tic Tacs my liver would turn to sludge.
but what they were actually asking was "has Advil not been a solution for you", in which case I could've answered 'yes'. anyway, because of this fuck-up on my part, my claim got denied twice in a row, and the third time it was only accepted because the person assisting me said very wearily "maybe Advil gives you stomach aches, and that's why you can't take it" and I finally cottoned on and was like "yeaaaaah......yeah, that's it."
I used to think I didn't have autistic literalism because I understand metaphors, but it is actually a deficit that impacts my life lol
