it's a exposição de expedição (the expedition exhibition)
As unbelievable as it seems, we have now concluded all of our study tour ventures. And if I may so, we definitely saved one of the best for last. Not only was the Expedition exhibit at FIT geniusly concocted, but it aligned perfectly with what he have learned in our other classes this semester.
Based on all of the parkas, safari jackets, neoprene and galactic inspired pieces we wear on a daily basis, it is more than safe to say that exploration/expeditio is an extremely vast inspiration to much of the post modern fashion industry. Not only from a functional perspective, but from an optimistic one, we as designers must strive to achieve fashion that we all crave. And in this case, much of what we crave is right in front of us!
Verdicto Ultimo (final verdict): I'm ready to design for the new frontier! Whatever it may be.
it's a Dover Street Market
This week's fashion excursion was probably one of my favorite so far! The infamous Rei Kawakubo's Dover Street Market is the perfect balance of artisan, spunk, NYC and of course fashion! From the moment I entered the threshold, I felt a rush of energy and excitement. All of the bright colors. Cool accessories. And a glorious glass elevator.
Especially compared to other large "department" stores like Barney's and Bergdorf Goodman, Dover Street proposes a fun approach to high fashion and showcases classic high end designers and emerging talents alike.
Verdicto Ultimo (final verdict): *sings* if I were a rich girl! Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na!
it's a B & B (Bergdorf & Barney's)
There is no simultaneous joy and pain like being in the shoe department of Bergdorf Goodman or Barney's and not being even being able to afford the air you're breathing.
If this visit wasn't motivation for me to be successful and make some money, then idk what would be! The presentation of every garment and accessory. The atmosphere created by fixtures, clean color palettes and hip music. All these things and more make for the ultimate clientele and THE fashion experience.
Verdicto Ultimo (final verdict): I can't wait for the day that I can casually throw my college tuition on the counter in exchange for a pair of red bottoms!
it's a MOMA
Museums are always exhilarating, but this exhibit of "objects" was particularly touching. From the mundane everyday clothing we take for granted, to some of the most avant garde pieces of their time, my time at the MOMA reminded me of the reasons why fashion is important to me.
My favorite piece definitely had to be the blue striped jumpsuit, which btw I would wear everywhere if I could! Even a perfunctory tailored zoot suit makes my heart flutter, and goes to show that sometimes something as simple as the right color sneakers or the perfectly cut trouser can make all the difference in how we feel about ourselves, and how we want others to feel when they see us.
Verdicto Ultimo (final verdict): There is nothing ordinary about what we do in fashion.
it's o grupo Doneger (the Doneger Group)
This week for study tour, we got to visit one of the most well known establishments in fashion schools around the country: Doneger! I personally have used their forecasting resources on several occasions for projects and my own curiosity.
On our visit, we got to learn more about what it's like to work at the Doneger group and the various roles there are in each department that make up all of the content and services Doneger provides. But, the best part of the visit by far was meeting the owner/founder, Mr. Doneger himself!
Verdicto Ultimo (Final Verdict): I need to be more social in random restaurants in Florida!
it's a Story
This week's study tour was probably my favorite so far! In our visit to Story, a retail concept store, we were able to participate in such an interactive beauty experience, as well as interactive shopping experience. With tons of sweepstakes and rewarded activities, just by taking a selfie and using specific hashtags, I was able to win free lipsticks, foundation and temporary hair dye!
I have already used all of the products I won, and I can't wait to go back to Story to enjoy their next retail experience!
Verdicto Ultimo (final verdict):
it's a Create A Marker
This week's study tour adventure landed us in a 10th floor pattern marking and grading shop. In prime location, Create A Marker is the go-to one stop shop for all grading and marking of patterns for the fashion industry.
During our visit, we got to see how patterns are graded from sizes 000 to 16 without changing the pattern itself (which is much harder than it seems!) And we even got a glimpse of the latest pattern scanning technology, which makes copying and sending patterns waaaaayyyy easier!
But, I must say, the most intriguing part of the visit was meeting the infamous Popsicle: the most majestic of cats!
Verdicto Ultimo (Final Verdict): I'm allergic to cats.
