It worries me that many so called ‘moderate Muslims’ express almost ISIS-like sentiments.

When you see a same-sex couple in public holding hands, & you wish to forbid them that;

When you see a woman dressed ‘indecently’ according to your standards, & you wish to force a more ‘decent’ dress code on her;

When you believe religious minorities shouldn’t be equal to Muslims & shouldn’t be allowed to take government positions or even be head of state;

When you want your religion to be the state religion, for your holy book to be the basis of the constitution & source of legislation, & for your religion to have special status over other religions & over non-belief;

When you want to make anything that is against your religious beliefs (or at least your specific interpretations of it) a crime punishable with jail & even the death penalty;

When you don’t uphold the concept of personal freedoms or human rights but seek the freedom in forcing your beliefs on others;

If you do all that & describe yourself as a ‘moderate Muslim’, you are far from it. You have far more in common with the extremists who you claim aren’t practising ‘real Islam’.

An Often Ignored Beauty

This image shows the spiral galaxy NGC 986 in the constellation of Fornax (The Furnace). The galaxy, which was discovered in 1826 by the Scottish astronomer James Dunlop, is not often imaged due to its proximity to the famous and rich Fornax Cluster of galaxies. Which is a shame, as this galaxy is not only a great scientific object, but also very pretty.

The galaxy is about 56 million light-years away and seen almost perfectly from the top, or — as astronomers say — face-on. This allows us to see the two main spiral arms and also a central bar-shaped structure, composed of stars and dust, which makes it a barred spiral galaxy.
