Speaking in general about these songs in particular with Harry and Taylor as in COSOSOM, Coming Up Roses, MMITH, Exile and Woman …. Hang on.
And this is where it really breaks my heart — because so much of the pain comes from jealousy that never turns into action, only silence.
In COSOSOM, it feels like Taylor’s watching from the outside, assuming Harry has been moving on, having fun, surrounded by people who make her feel small or unwelcome (Enter Kendall Jenner cough). There’s insecurity there, but not indifference. She doesn’t say anything, not because she doesn’t want to — but because she doesn’t feel safe enough to claim what she wants without risking everything.
At the same time, it feels like Harry isn’t fully present either. There’s this sense of him being caught up in distraction — numbing himself, chasing a feeling, needing escape. When he calls her out as being cold , it feels less like an accusation and more like a misunderstanding. She isn’t cold — she’s guarded. She doesn’t want to be something temporary, something he reaches for only when he needs relief.
That tension echoes softly through ‘MMITH’, ‘Woman’ , and even ‘Exile’ — where both sides feel the jealousy, sense the distance, and still don’t know how to bridge it. What ties all of these songs together is inaction. Both of them are watching. Both are assuming. Both are hurting — not because the love isn’t there, but because neither knows how to step forward at the same time.
‘Coming Up Roses’ and ‘COSOSOM’ feel like mirrors of that moment: Two people letting things happen instead of choosing, standing back as something meaningful slips past them. And that’s the quiet tragedy — not that they didn’t want each other, but that they kept waiting for the other to speak first.
Still there’s something gentle in the way these songs exist now. They don’t feel bitter — they feel understanding.
Like finally naming what went wrong. And maybe that awareness doesn’t change the past, but it softens it.
It leaves room for the hope that if something ever comes back around, it could be met with honesty instead of silence, and presence instead of waiting
