Billy wasn’t expecting Halle to plop down beside him during lunch. Billy could see the confused look on Harrington’s face from across the cafeteria. Halle didn’t sit with the popular crowd, yet here she was.
“Hi Tommy,” Halle greeted before turning to Billy. “I saw your car last night. What are you doing in the woods so late?”
Billy almost choked on his sandwich. Halle had seen his car when he was out running in the woods. He thought he’d hidden his car well. He wondered if anyone else had seen it. He was lucky that she didn’t catch a glimpse of him.
Billy coughed, clearing his throat, “I couldn’t sleep. Why were you in the woods?” His eyes narrowed as he stared at her, but she remained calm.
“I was looking for Triscuit, my dog. He was hurt the last time I saw him, and I was worried. Did you see him last night?”
Halle’s eyes flickered over Billy’s face, lingering in different spots. She had this foreign look in her eyes that Billy hadn’t seen before. It was deep and searching.

Halle was in bed when the whining outside her window started. After a minute, she opened the window, letting the lamp light reach Billy.
He didn’t jump through the window like he normally would have. His back paw was lifted. Any weight on it hurt. He stared up at Halle, not knowing why he was there. He couldn’t hear her words, his ears still ringing.
She shut the window, and his head dropped. She didn’t want him there. He screwed up the last time. She hardly tolerated him as a human, and now she didn’t want him as a wolf either.
With his tail tucked between his legs, he began to limp across the lawn. He hadn’t been concerned with hiding. He just needed to get out of the house. He crawled out his window and headed towards Halle’s, walking the eight blocks through the woods, only transforming when he exited the woods.

Billy thought he was doing well in his plan. He managed two weeks. Halle had even tried to speak with him about the books he’d checked out in the library. Each time he brushed her off, ignoring the ping of hurt it brought her. He wasn’t going to be a victim of whatever supernatural bond was trying to form. It was also best that Halle didn’t get attached. He was going to California after he graduated, and Halle still had another year of school.
The space he built between them took effort to build, yet crumbled so easily. He walked into school and immediately smelled Halle. Her scent shouldn’t have been so strong. It hung heavily in the air, sweet and thick. His mouth started watering, which was concerning. He was nearly drooling at the thought of her.
Halle was on the other side of the school. He didn’t understand why he could smell her so strongly from where he stood. Against his better judgment, he followed her scent, ignoring the rational part of his mind.
“You look nice,” he greeted, leaning into the wall beside her as she sorted through her locker.
Halle jumped at his sudden presence. Her hand pressed against her chest as she turned towards him.
“Jesus! Do you have to scare me this early?” Halle exclaimed. She was irritated, but Billy barely noticed. He could barely smell her perfume through her natural scent, soaking the air around her.
“Did you do something new with your hair?” He asked, leaning towards her further.
“Ugh, no. Not really,” Halle slowly enunciated. She was staring at him like he was a coiled snake, and she was not sure how to react.

He’d sat with her during class. Even if she was more open to him hanging around, he hadn’t gotten very far with her. The only time she really responded with enthusiasm was when he asked her about his wolf version.

“Uhh, research,” he replied, knowing that Halle had already skimmed the titles. She’d tilted her head to read the spines. Her nose scrunched the smallest bit as she realized the subject.
“Did you get those because of my dog?” Halle questioned with her head still cocked.
Billy felt a squeeze in his chest. Her dog. She thought he was hers. The idea warmed his chest. He responded by shrugging, too focused on fighting a smile.

Billy had been reckless. He’d snuck out his window and transformed, close to his house. It was something he knew was risky, but he did it anyway. Halle’s house was only eight blocks away, and he’d been in a rush.
The chance of getting caught was higher now in the sunlight. There weren’t as many shadows to hide in. Yet, Billy did his best to hide in the brush until he was fully human again. After that, it was easy. He didn’t care if someone saw him naked in the woods. It would be easier to explain that than to explain why he turned into a wolf.
Billy tugged on his clothes, which he’d hidden behind a tree. Then he crawled back through his window. He could hear Max in the kitchen pouring a bowl of cereal. He wasn’t really hungry after all the food Halle offered him, but he wanted coffee.
Max snickered as he walked into the kitchen. He narrowed his eyes, which seemed to amuse her further. He ignored her as he poured the rest of the coffee in the pot into a mug before heading back to his room. It wasn’t until he stood in front of his mirror, about to fix his hair, that he realized why Max was snickering. Right between his eyebrows was a berry colored stain. The same color as Halle’s lipstick.

“Unless his parents bought it for him, he can sit somewhere else,” Billy answered, eying the brunet. He hadn’t expected Halle to be the one to confront him. His brain started to go a little fuzzy now that she was so close.
“Whatever. I’ll just sit up front. I don’t have the energy to deal with this asshole today,” Harrington muttered before moving to Billy’s usual spot.
Billy grinned, knowing he’d won. Halle glared at him. She dropped her bag on the ground and plopped into the chair beside him.

I jolted up as much as I could as the door banged against the wall. Eddie entered the house with loud steps. He’d pulled on a cut-up band shirt and baggy shorts he’d found at the thrift store with me last summer. His eyes immediately landed on Billy, who had moved fully on top of me during our nap. It restricted my ability to move.
“Close the door. You’re letting all the hot air in,” I scolded.
Eddie didn’t remove his gaze as he reached for the door and closed it harder than necessary. His eyes hardened further as he looked at what Billy and I were wearing, which wasn’t much considering it was swimsuits.
“Get off her,” Eddie ordered in a tone so low it sounded like a snarl.
Billy lifted his head from the crook of my neck to glance at Eddie. Billy’s expression didn’t show anything other than annoyance.
“Fuck off. Let me take a nap with my girlfriend,” Billy grumbled before tucking his face back into my neck.
Eddie’s hands clenched into fists as he rolled his jaw. I stared at Eddie. I wasn’t used to him expressing real anger. Eddie wasn’t angry often. He was merely annoyed most times and just chose to be dramatic about it, but this time, he was angry. Eddie didn’t even glance at me. He was focused on Billy, and my arms wrapped around Billy’s bare torso.
“I said get the fuck off her, Hargrove,” Eddie demanded.

“Oh, he is so mad,” Max said, trying not to laugh. She was crouched down, staring out the back window where Eddie was standing at the window of his trailer.
“Of course he is,” Billy commented, shifting the car into drive.
He braced his hand on the back of my seat as he quickly reversed. I held on to my seatbelt. I was used to Eddie’s erratic driving. Billy was admittedly a better driver, but maybe it just felt that way since his car wasn’t top-heavy.
“Ugh, you gave her a hickey?” Max gagged from the backseat.
I’d forgotten about it until my dad mentioned it at breakfast. I had never felt so embarrassed. I spent the next five minutes explaining to my dad that it was to make Eddie jealous. Of course, that was after he demanded to know who it was, and I begrudgingly had to admit it was his coworker, Billy. My dad hadn’t liked that, but lightened up when I said I was just trying to figure out if Eddie liked me back. My father rubbed his face with his hand and sighed, saying I should just ask Eddie instead of playing games. Maybe he was right, but then again, this way, if Eddie didn’t get jealous, Billy and I could end our fake relationship and pretend nothing ever happened.
“Hey. I have a reputation to keep,” Billy answered, which made sense. Even though he hadn’t been hooking up with people as much since the fire, his reputation was still well-known.

“Surprised your long-haired mutt isn’t following you around,” a deep voice said after the break room door opened.
I looked up to see the newest mechanic, Billy Hargrove. I knew him from school. He’d been the new hot commodity when he moved to Hawkins from California towards the beginning of his senior year. After he graduated, he got a job as a lifeguard at the community pool. I’d passed him in the school halls and seen him when I spent hot days at the pool, but we’d never spoken. I knew Eddie, and he had problems, since Billy was part of the popular crowd that sometimes picked on Eddie.
Even if I didn’t know Billy from school, I would have recognized him from the news and the fact that he was Max’s stepbrother. He’d been one of the few survivors of the Starcourt Mall fire. He’d been in the hospital for a month after healing from the burns.
He’d fallen off the social ladder since then. Billy didn’t go to parties and was no longer hooking up with any girl who caught his attention. He’d become kind of a loner. That didn’t stop people from constantly demanding his attention. It brought in a lot of customers to the mechanics. Most of them were older women who wanted their oil changed or tires rotated every month.
“What?” I asked, staring up at the blonde.
He looked different from how he’d looked at school or at the community pool. His curly mullet was a little shorter, and the blond had darkened from the lack of sun streaks in it.
“Munson. He acts like he’s on a leash,” Billy commented, stepping into the room. He moved to the fridge and pulled out a Cola.
