This morning a magnitude 7.4 quake (it’s been upgraded from 7.3) struck off the coast of Fukushima, and a tsunami warning / evacuation order was issued immediately. Eventually everything was OK, but we rattled around a bit.

Quakes are measured on the Richter scale, but in Japan we also use the Shindo scale, which describes what it actually feels like. As a veteran of several quakes including the 2011 megamonster, I can assure you that this ↑ is a very good description. Japan is used to and well prepared for quakes, and people don’t panic about anything under 6. Generally speaking.

There’s a big difference between points. The 2011 quake was Shindo 7 in Miyagi and Shindo 5+ in Tokyo. This morning’s quake was 4 in Tokyo. To compare? My reaction this morning was “uh-oh maybe I should get up but maybe not it’s cold”; my reaction in 2011 was “oh shit oh shit oh shit we’re dead”.

More context: the highest tsunami today was 140 cm; the highest tsunami waves after the 2011 quake were 39 meters. However, let’s put that into perspective as well. A tsunami of 1 meter has a 100% chance of killing an unprotected individual. Why? Here’s why, with an illustration from trend-izumi.com: a tsunami is not a normal wave (left), but a solid wall of water.
