general rule of thumb: history was gayer than you have been led to believe
[Part 2: Shakespeare] Hey Pride Knights! Welcome to our second mini queer history lesson. Another instance of a historical figure’s sexuality potentially being erased or hidden is that of William Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s sexuality has been hotly debated among academics, with many people arguing that he was heterosexual, while others argue that he was queer. The main argument people tend to make was that he was in fact, heterosexual. With this argument primarily arising from two areas. Firstly, the heteronormative interpretation that history tends to portray and secondly, his documented romantic relationships with women.
The most major of these romantic relationships which have been documented was his marriage to Anne Hathaway when Shakespeare was just 18 years of age. Furthermore, Shakespeare was also reported to be a “player”, cheating on his wife multiple times with multiple different women, showcasing his interest in women and his unfaithful nature. Alongside these arguments, Shakespeare was also known to write a multitude of sonnets or love poems, 154 to be exact, with 26 of these sonnets being addressed to a married woman only named as the Dark Lady. These sonnets may have been about affairs he had previously had or his continued fantasy to be with a married woman, but either way, they do give substantial evidence to Shakespeare being romantically and sexually attracted to women.
But as we know, just because a man likes women, this does not mean that they are not queer. Sexuality is a spectrum, there has always been areas within this spectrum between heterosexuality and homosexuality, and Shakespeare may have found himself within this. One reason to believe this is due to the sonnets which were previously mentioned before. Of the 154 sonnets, 126 of them were about a young man named the Fair Youth and addressed to a Mr. W.H. with these dwarfing the number of sonnets about the Dark Lady.
