You almost said yes.Â
You let out a soft sigh of relief, tears filling your dilated eyes as you looked into his. Just as you were about to speak, you heard a voice, soft and barely audible, but it was there. It sounded familiar. Your gaze drifted down the empty, dark hallway, searching for the source of the sound.
âShh,â Henry said gently, lifting his hand to guide your attention back to him. âIâm here.â
You felt dazed, and then the sound came again, warped, as if it were muffled by water.
âCome back,â a voice called out. His voice.
Your voice barely above a whisper. âSteve?â
You felt Henry shift, his stance becoming more rigid, standing taller, something sharper slipping through the calm.Â
He brought his hand back to your face, firm this time, guiding your attention to him.
âTheyâre trying to pull you away,â he said quietly. âAnd if you let them⌠they wonât survive whatâs to come.â
His thumb brushed your cheek.
âStay,â Henry murmured. âI wonât hurt you. You know that.â
âDo I?â You took his hand from your face, your fingers trembling as you slowly backed away, every instinct screaming at you to be careful.
âAll youâve done is cause me pain,â you said quietly, your voice shaking but steady enough to hold its ground. âOn top of everything my life had already given me.â
You swallowed hard, forcing yourself to meet his eyes.
âI wonât deny that youâve left a mark on me,â you continued. âAn irreversible one.â
A beat.
âBut that doesnât mean I belong to you.â Your heart raced as you shook your head, tears blurring your vision.
âWake up!â Steveâs voice slammed into the space around you, no longer distant, no longer muffled. âCome back, please!â
The world began to tremble. The walls shuddered. Henryâs form flickered violently, his presence stuttering as the sound tore through the trance. Light split the air ahead of you, rippling, unstable, and through it you saw them, through a cloud a world away.
Your body is motionless on the floor of the Creel House. Steve was gripping your shoulders, shaking you desperately, his voice breaking as he begged you to wake up seeing only the whites of your eye.
Nancy and Robin were hacking at the hive mind vines, hands blistered and shaking as they fought to weaken whatever hold Vecna had on you. Flames coated the walls as they fought with everything they had.
âRobin! Nancy! Help!â Steve choked out, as he had you wrapped in his arms.
They had come in with a plan. They thought they understood Vecnaâs pattern. Max was supposed to be the one to draw in Vecna, distract him while you guy were the nail in the coffin.Â
None of them had seen this coming.Â
None of them had expected him to sink his claws into you instead.
Your chest burned. Without thinking, you ran.
âNO!â Henryâs voice snapped sharp for the first time as you bolted toward the opening, the pull of the real world dragging at you like gravity.
The portal roared, wind tearing at your clothes as you leapt. Henry lunged. His fingers brushed the back of your jacket, grazing fabric before slipping away.
Missed.
He stood still for a moment, staring into the empty space where you once were. At a glance, he looked calm and collected but his hands were clenched so tightly they could have drawn blood.
You fell.
Slammed back into your body with a violent gasp.
You sucked in air like you had been drowning, your lungs burning as your eyes snapped open. Steve was there instantly, pulling you upright, crushing you against him as relief tore through his face.
âOh my god,â he breathed, pulling you in. âYouâre here. I got you.â
Nancy and Robin collapsed beside you, panting, bruised, alive. But you didnât relax.
Your heart was still racing.
Your hands shook as dread curled deep in your stomach. âHeâs not done,â you whispered hoarsely. âWe have to go. Now.â
The house answered you.
Vines exploded from the walls. Nancy barely had time to scream before she was yanked backward, slammed hard against the wall. Robin was ripped off her feet beside her, wrists pinned above her head.
âNO!â you shouted, scrambling forward with Steve. You and Steve hacked and pulled at the vines. When suddenly, a vine lashed out, wrapping tight around Steveâs throat.
He choked, hands flying to his neck as he was lifted off the floor, boots kicking uselessly as another vine coiled around his chest.
âSteve!â you screamed.
Nancy thrashed helplessly. Robin sobbed your name.
And thenâŚ
âThere you are.â Henryâs voice slid into your mind, calm and warm, as if none of this cost him anything. âYou ran.â He murmured.
Tears streamed down your face as you dropped to your knees, shaking.
âPlease,â you sobbed, a hand coming to your chest, feeling as if your heart were actually breaking in two. âStop. Please.â
âYou see now,â Henry continued softly. âYou donât get to walk away. Not when you matter this much.â
Steveâs eyes met yours, wide, panicked, still trying to tell you not to do this, but all that came out were choked gasps as his face began to turn a deadly shade. The vine tightened.
Something inside you shattered completely.
âIâLL DO IT!â you screamed. âIâll go with you, just let them go! PLEASE!â
Silence crashed down. The vines froze.
Steve collapsed to the floor, gasping violently as the grip around his throat released.
Nancy and Robin dropped beside him, coughing, clutching each other as you scrambled to them, sobbing uncontrollably.
Henryâs voice bloomed around you, patient and certain, filling the space you couldnât escape.
âYou made the right choice,â he whispered. âYou always do.â
A vine coiled around your leg. Hands grabbed you instantly, Steve, Nancy, and Robin, pulling, screaming your name as the vine dragged you backward toward the door.
âNow,â Henryâs voice murmured, calm and patient. âYou know what to do.â
You swallowed hard. You knew what you had to do.
âIâm sorry,â you choked through tears. Steveâs eyes widened. âI had to.â
âNo, donât!â
You let go.
The vine yanked you through the front door, your scream tearing into the dark.
The world began to blur.
Henry guided you home.

Next Chapter
The old, creaky floorboards of the Creel House were the only sounds inside, broken only by the occasional screech of demobats circling outside.
Nancy was the first to enter the house surveying the surroundings and leading the way.
Nancy turned towards the group âRobin and I will take the second floor. You and Steve, survey the first floor.â She gave a firm nod and began walking cautiously up the stairs with Robin.
You and Steve locked eyes, he placed a firm hand on your shoulder âI said this to Eddie and I will reiterate to you, donât be a hero, we stick together and we leave this hell hole together, got it?â His eyes searched yours, flickering back and forth, waiting for your answer. To agree.
You took a deep breath, holding back the horrible thoughts of what could happen, you nodded and placed your hand on top of his âGot it.âÂ
âGood.â Steve smiled and then adjusted his gear, determined. âCome on.â You and Steve began walking carefully, making sure not to trigger any vines.
You felt your heart race, not knowing if it was adrenaline or fear, probably both but you gripped your spear tighter and firmer preparing for what was yet to come. You hoped that this would be the end of everything, the demogorgons, deaths, sadness, and fear. You just wanted normal, a place free of horror. Where you could bask in the sunlight, listen to your favorite song and not needing it to save you but to just feed you happiness. To be held and cared for just because and not because danger demanded it. You just want to be free.
The grandfather clock had rung.Â
âYou can have it all, join me where fear no longer consumes you.â Your breath hitched hearing his voice. You felt him, the warmth of his breath against your neck. You slowly turned your body, your eyes refusing to meet his. You expected his Vecna form but instead you were met with Henry. His blonde hair falling softly on his eyes as he looked down at you, towering your form. Your eyes finally met his crystal clear blue eyes. Your legs and hands began to shake slightly but you werenât going to let him see what he did to you.Â
âWhy would you do that?â You asked firmly but cursed yourself for the whisper it came out in. Your hand slowly began to reach into your pocket for the knife you had there.
Henry reached out his left hand and raised it towards your hair, tucking it behind your ear softly. âYou remind me of someone, I want to give you what I couldnât give to her. I can keep you safe. I am the only one that can truly understand you.â
âAnd if I dont⌠go with you?â His eyes shifted and the hand that had gently tucked your hair back now gripped your jaw, forcing you closer, your faces mere centimeters apart.
Henry spoke calmly contradicting his actions. âThen your friends wonât make it out alive. And your mother, fragile as she is, will be the first to break. And you my dear, your fate will be much worse than theirs.â Henry looks into your eyes inching closer to your lips âbut why choose them? Youâre already alone in this world. I can make your hurt go away.â
Suddenly the world around shifted.
You were younger. Smaller.
The air was still and a bright light shined through the familiar window, you felt your heart sink as you realized where you were. Your room.
You stood frozen as the memory unfolded around you. The sound of a door slamming echoed down the hall, followed by raised voices, angry, slurred and sharp. You knew what came next. You always did.
âYou did everything right,â Henryâs voice whispered near you. âYou did what you could do, stayed quiet, stayed out of the way. You learned from an early age how to survive.â He held your shoulders from behind and turned you towards your tiny form, crying into her knees that were pulled towards her chest as she covered her ears in hopes that it would block out the never ending nightmares.
âYou learned how to disappear, how to carry everything alone,â Henry said gently.Â
Your throat burned.Â
âThatâs why this world hurts you,â he went on. âBecause it was never built for someone like you.â
The world around you began to change and morph.Â
You were now at school. A hallway. Laughter that wasnât meant to include you. A shoulder brushing past yours without an apology. A voice calling you too sensitive, too much, not enough. You werenât sure which hurt more.
âYou see?â Henry murmured âEverywhere you go, youâre surviving instead of living.â
Henryâs presence is warm and close behind you.
âI can stop this,â he said. âNo more fear. No more waiting for something to break. No more pretending youâre fine when youâre not.â The world stilled. Your heartbeat slowed. For the first time in what felt like forever⌠it didnât hurt as much. You exhaled shakily. And for a moment, just a moment, you let yourself imagine it.
A life without constant vigilance. Without the ache in your chest. Without needing to be brave all the time. A place where you didnât have to earn care or prove your worth just to keep it. Henry felt the shift immediately.
âThatâs it,â he whispered, closer now. âYou donât have to fight anymore.â Your fingers loosened around the spear. Your shoulders began to loosen and fall.
Henry turned you gently to face him. His blue eyes searched yours, not hungry, not rushed but patient. Certain.
âChoose yourself,â he said quietly. âJust this once.â
Your lips parted. Your heart pounded, not with fear, but with something dangerously close to hope. And for the first time since stepping into the Creel HouseâŚ
