How People see the Marauders in their academic life: 

Sirius: Slacker, trying to be punk

James: Has good grades, but still trying to look like he doesn’t care

Peter: Always fails

Remus: always studying, never stops

How they really were described in the book (via Snape’s memory) :

Sirius: A freakin’ nerd. Easily aces subjects and has time to lean back in his chair and day dream 

James: Easily next to Sirius with his grades and time

Peter: Struggling, a little dense, but he is that kid that when he panics at a question he tries to look at everyone else’s papers

Remus: Scratches out answers, rewrites them, needing to study so he can keep high grades

How I like to see them: 

Sirius: A nerd that tries to act punk though if he starts slipping in a subject he rushes to study and forgets he has to be cool 

James: Balances his studying and fun the best he can as a teenage boy. Makes sure to keep his grades up, and keep high marks, while doing the things he loves. 

Peter: Has his subjects that he is good at but also skills that aren’t taught at Hogwarts. He just get flustered during tests and those are his downfall usually. 

Remus: Does his best to keep high grades, he owes it to Dumbledore for letting him come, but he has that problem of staring off into space during class or doodling on every piece of parchment when he isn’t interested in what he is hearing or too lazy to care. (around exam time though he pays more attention)
