Up to 200 of these wild Albertan horses are being culled until March by the Alberta provincial government, despite a population of less than 950 animals in an area of over 2.2 million hectares. (source)
These horses have lived in Alberta for over one hundred years and their blood lines are believed to date back to the Spanish Barb or even ancient blood lines. The culling process separates family units, weakens the herds and further threatens their survival after an already harsh winter.
To stop this injustice, sign this petition and preserve the survival of this unique and historical species.

Giant rats put noses to work on Mozambique’s landmines
A small army of landmine-detecting rats is to be redeployed in Mozambique in a push to meet a deadline to have the country declared free of mines this year.
Belgian non-governmental organisation Apopo trains African giant pouched rats to sniff out the explosives in landmines by conditioning them to associate the scent with rewards of food.
The rats undergo nine months of training, learning to sniff out the explosives in old landmines buried underground. They scratch the ground to alert their handlers to mines.
The rodents are quick learners and easy to work with, according to Alson Majanzota, leader of one of Apopo’s rat handling teams. The animals can check 200sq m of land for mines in 30 minutes; a human armed with a metal detector could take up to three days to do the same job, he adds.
See every animal no matter how gross and awful, has its purpose.

Maurer Pet of the Week!
After a brief hiatus, because I am lazy, we are returning with the Maurer Pet of the Week!
Up this week... Special Precious Treasure, the loyal kitty of our own Sara Hunkler!
How did you get your Cat?
- Special Precious Treasure was adopted from the Humane Society in Washington DC.
What is your favorite SPT story?
- When SPT was small, he would hide and then leap onto your back from the floor and cling to your shoulders, like a piggy back. It was super cute, but really painful when you had bare shoulders. He did it to a few repairmen and made them scream like little girls in surprise.
What does SPT do on the weekends?
- Sleep, kill small animals, mess up all the rugs.
What are SPT's likes/dislikes?
- Likes: playing outside, being held like a baby, killing things.
Dislikes: my boyfriend, initially (he bit him on the thigh and then ran around the house and knocked things over), when I throw away dead mice he brings me and do not appreciate them appropriately, he gets very miffed.
What does SPT do while you’re in class?
- Sleep, kill small animals, mess up all the rugs.
