Wayang Kulit Puppet. Javanese, 20th c. Water buffalo hide, horn, pigment, gilt. IU Art Museum 63.321
IU Theatre Assistant Professor Jennifer Goodlander presents the following programs next week, we hope you'll join us:
Handsome Princes and Scary Ogres: Mirrors of Indonesia through Puppets Wednesday, January 29, 12:15–1:00 p.m. Gallery of the Arts of Asia and the Ancient Western World, second floor
Whether wayang kulit (shadow puppetry) or wayang golek (rod puppetry), the puppets of Indonesia provide insight into character, religion, and history. The word “wayang” means mirror. The visage of a puppet—narrow eyes or gruesome teeth, for instance—tells a dynamic story on display and in performance. Jennifer Goodlander, assistant professor in the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance and faculty research Curator at the Mathers Museum, will talk about some of the puppets on display at the Art Museum and their use and meaning in performance.
Shadow Puppet Stories Sunday, February 2, 2:00–4:00 p.m. Thomas T. Solley Atrium, second floor
Join assistant professor of theatre and shadow puppet performer Jennifer Goodlander for an afternoon of storytelling and puppet making. This family-friendly event will feature an Indonesian shadow puppet performance and an art-making activity inspired by Indonesian puppets in the museum’s Gallery of the Arts of Asia and the Ancient Western World. The event is free and open to people of all ages. All materials and light refreshments will be provided.
