16-bit Final Fantasy Time

Sometimes a collection of acclaimed SNES RPGs from 30+ years ago are so foundational to your life and personality that you can't live normally, and also Mystic Quest is there for some reason. So you make a sideblog. But then you realize sideblogs suck. So you make a new primary blog. (Formerly @ivvvihours)

First time using sidewalk chalk since childhood; lots to learn! This took the better part of three hours but it was a lot of fun and a beautiful afternoon. Already have plenty of ideas about how to go about this more efficiently in the future.

Thank you for the prompt @memoriiiiia! Lemme fill this'n out as best I can. Turns out that since I'm always trying to do a dozen things at once (poorly), answering any of these is more complicated than it ought to be!

Onward, to Last song, Last book, Last movie, Last TV Show, Favourite colour, favourite flavor, Current obsession, Last search, and Looking forward to:

Last song: The last one I deliberately sought out was either Aisling's Song from *The Secret of Kells* (but I was really seeking out the visuals to show a friend), or Sam & Dave's "Hold On, I'm Coming". The last one to come up on shuffle was "Yubiwa" which caused me to immediately close the program because I made the mistake of listening to it once 17 years ago right after putting my cat down and I could not handle the feelings at that time, lol.

Last book: Start to finish? Indexing Books (Second Edition), Nancy C. Mulvany. Yes, it's...it's about making indexes. For books. I loved it. Last fiction I read were both for the Werewolf: The Apocalypse TTRPG, Drums Around the Fire and The Silver Crown; the former is a collection of stories and the latter a novella, and while I enjoyed them they weren't demanding at all. I'm presently working my way through the Lancer corebook, also, and hoping to get around to reading Bleak House by Charles Dickens...but first, for FF6 Celebration purposes, I have another book to read. aaaaa so much to do

Last movie: Recently rewatched The Princess Bride with my mom because it is always charming and leaves her in a better mood. Last movie I watched for the first time...might have been Edge of Tomorrow? I realize I haven't watched many movies lately.

Last TV Show: I am watching Apothecary Diaries through with my friends every Thursday right now, because I fell off watching it partway through Season 2 and one of us hasn't watched it at all. Not sure what the last show I watched fully was, though...

Favourite colour: Oh Ria you are so right, sunny and warm yellows, oranges & browns are best.

Spicy, sweet, or savoury: Ria, again, you correct: all three, all at once. I'm a sucker for sweet heat always.

Current obsession: The ongoing obsessions of my life continue to be Werewolf: The Apocalypse (a TTRPG with history back to 1993 which I would describe as 'fraught but beautiful') and, for about the past year and a half, Final Fantasy 6, here to grapple me into submission even more than it did when I was a child.

Last search: "perry bible fellowship dinosaurs summon meteors webcomic", earlier today, for...reasons (finding specific PBF comics is not easy without a little help!). Last search of any real interest was "ﾁｬﾀﾞﾙﾇｰｸ", the Japanese name for Chadarnook, to try and discover if that name really comes from anywhere. I did not find any leads but I did find some horny Pixiv fanart so that's almost a win! As a bonus, the last search on my phone was "Ral Partha", to find out if that miniature company was still active.

Looking forward to: FF6 Celebration in October, taking a walk down to the local library, chatting about FF6 with friends!

One of the funniest things about FF6 is that the tyrannosaurs can cast Meteor, because this implies that tyrannosaurs were responsible for the K-Pg event.

A pair of tyrannosaurs throwing meteors at you is probably one of the funnier ways to get TPK'd in this game.

This is possible, and I have also realized that brachiosaur also casts Meteor, so it may have been a dinosaur wizard duel!

Kefka's height.

One of my absolute favourite discoveries I've made as I play and delve deeper into FFVI and all of its wonderful lore and trivia is that Kefka is...incredibly short.

In his concept art and most fanart that you see--including a few of my own--he's drawn as some looming, hulking figure. He's also often drawn with an air of confidence and even arrogance, and his design being eye-catching and vibrant also tends to give off the assumption that a guy like this must be...tall, right? Arrogant, confident, intimidating, evil, all characteristics of someone you may imagine that MUST have some sort of fairly impressive height. I've even seen quite a few art pieces where he is MUCH taller than the rest of the FFVI cast.

So with all of this in mind, paired with his final boss look where he really IS hulking and looming and ginormous, it is incredibly funny when you realize that--no. He is not tall. He is not average height. He is not even 5'6. (Despite what the online wiki says. Trust me I know.)

He's 5'4. 162 cm.

Kefka is an inch taller than Tina. An inch.

Now of course, he does appear to wear heels, and because of this delightful discovery, I have fully decided that he wears them BECAUSE he is so short. A way to assert dominance and all that.

Regardless, I thought it was really funny and will probably draw a few silly doodles about it when I get the chance.

I wish something more artists would do when making covers of Terra's Theme from Final Fantasy VI is listen to a bunch of Ennio Morricone first. Because the song is clearly, in every element, Nobuo Uematsu making a piece that evokes Morricone. So many people making orchestral arrangements of the song, up to and including the Distant Worlds orchestra performances, pick the wrong instrumentation. The percussion is snare-focused. The main melody is banjo, flutes, and brass. And yet I keep hearing big string sections, woodwinds, and guitar. And sure, Morricone used guitar, but if you listen to Uematsu's original 16 bit composition, it's a damn banjo. There are strings, but they are quietly behind the banjo, snare, and brass, fleshing out the existing body. In orchestral arrangements, they try to make the strings the body and it just isn't the same. Also, where is the bass? It needs to punch right alongside the snare and support the lighter banjo through the bulk of the composition.

Oh hey so you know, I knew it was going to be trouble making this a sideblog. Originally I figured I would just lurk and it wouldn't matter, right? I'd reblog some things and go on my merry way.

But it turns out that these little, enduring fandoms are super friendly and great? And I love talking to you lot? And now I've been invited to a tumblr community and - oh. Oh right. Sideblogs can't function in those; I'd just have to...post under my primary blog? Which is relentlessly related to another rpg from the first half of the 90s but like. Not pertinent.

So, long story short, I'm moving to @ivvvimqhours and I guess I'll see you all there!
