Ok the more I think about it, the more I’m sure Dumai is alive
The ending was left intentionally ambiguous, but Dumai never wanted the rainbow throne, and she knew that if she survived there would be a civil war that would destroy Seikii. The river lord wanted to end the Noziken bloodline, and Dumai never wanted any children of her own anyway. And she knew that if Nikeya knew she was alive, she would want them to stick to their plan to rule and save Seikii together.
She called Nikeya a flower of the court because it’s what she’s good at, and now after all this time, she trusts Nikeya to lead the country into better times and do what she was raised to do by her father, but do it in her own way, in a way that honors what she and Dumai wanted
But Dumai is a child of the mountain. The entire book, all she wanted was to return to Mount Ipyeda and go back to her old life as a godsinger. Honestly, I think she might have even been there already when Nikeya went to visit Unora and the Dowager Empress. But she knew that Nikeya was the only person who could save Seikii and if she knew Dumai was alive, she would have dropped everything to be with her.
It wasn’t until the end, when Nikeya had already started her work on rebuilding and healing Seikii that Dumai made herself known. The comb and the message felt like, when you’re ready, I’ll be here, waiting for you.

the way nikeya is a “flower grown for court” but dumai wants nothing more than to get away from there, how it ends with nikeya on the throne and her essentially taking over dumai’s role/rejected duty as the ruler of seiiki and having to bear the burden of continuing the bloodline in dumai’s stead. how dumai’s name (“an ancient word for a dream that ends too soon”) is symbolic and foreshadowing. (the dream as her literal dream connection to glorian, as the sterren in her, as her connection to the gods/dragons, as her life (both in general and the life she had on mount ipyeda)). the way dumai takes back her life and becomes maiden officiant, the thing she always dreamed of being. dumai of ipyeda became noziken pa dumai, but she finally becomes dumai of ipyeda again. I fear I’m losing my mind
just finished reading the behemoth that is otherwise known as a day of fallen night. naturally, i’ve been trying to distract myself from the nameless ache plaguing my chest. i chanced upon this little gem:
page 118 of the priory of the orange tree includes a mention of dumai and nikeya.
it made me think of this passage:
nikeya kept the vow she swore to herself. even in death, dumai’s legacy continues to live on – nikeya’s, too. when sappho said “someone, i tell you, will remember us, even in another time,” i believe she was pertaining to this.
hhhhhhh i’m not okay </3
