Eliza had a bad habit of holding her breath in crowds. It had gotten to the point where she couldnât control it- sheâd just be walking through a big, people-littered area and just forget to breathe. It had started when she was little and her older sister, Angelica, had told her to be careful in crowds, because if you somehow walked past your soulmate and brushed hands, you would see color- but not know who your soulmate was. So, Eliza found herself walking without breathing, her arms always tucked close to her body. She didnât want to risk it.
Eliza stuck her hands into the pockets of her light gray pea coat and blew wisps of dark hair out of her face as she walked. It was cold, and in January, and her hair never liked to stay in its ponytail. Eliza pressed her lips together uncomfortably as she shouldered past people. She was on her way to work, and even though she could drive, walking was a way Eliza could clear her head.
Eliza reached her stop. She pulled the key out of her purse and unlocked the door, marching softly up the stairs. She started to unbutton her coat as she turned through several hallways before finally reaching her room. The room was small, but had floor to ceiling windows on one wall. Music posters covered most of the free walls and sheet music covered her desk. Eliza slipped her coat onto the rack in the corner and sat down in one of her plush chairs. She grabbed the guitar case that was sitting next to her and pushed it into her lap and unlatched it. She pulled out her favorite guitar. Eliza loved the shininess of the gray color and the feeling of these strings under her fingers.
Elizaâs students were always a bit late. She didnât mind though. She made a living, and she loved teaching. Today was Sunday, and todayâs student was always late. No matter what.
So, Eliza started strumming on her guitar and sang softly under her breath. It was a song she had been working on, but nothing had been solidified.
âThat sounds amazing, Ms. Schuyler.â Eliza stopped playing and looked up at the new voice. Her face broke into a wide grin.
âAlexander!â Eliza exclaimed, setting her guitar down so she could hug Alexander quickly. âThank you! Itâs just something Iâve been working on in my spare time.â
âWell, it sounds awesome.â Alexander smiled, taking a seat in his own cushioned chair next to her. âAny luck on your soulmate?â
Eliza sighed. Alexander knew all about Elizaâs soulmate fears, concerns, and problems. Eliza didnât pick a favorite student, but if she did, it would be Alexander.
âNone,â She drummed her fingers on her knees. âWhoever he is, we just havenât met. And not to mention all the factors that could mess it up and the stories Iâve heard and-â
âEliza.â Alexander interrupted. He gave his teacher a reassuring smile. âItâs gonna be okay. You and him are soulmates. Meant to be. Itâll all work out in the end.â
âWhatever you say, Alexander.â Eliza grabbed her guitar and plucked a few chords.
âI know what Iâm talking about.â Alexander replied, tightening his own ponytail before grabbing his guitar.
âJust because you met your soulmate when you were four years old doesnât mean you know what youâre talking about.â Eliza smirked playfully.
âLook,â Alexander began defiantly. âIt wasnât my fault. He touched me first. When I was four, all I wanted to do was be single and eat Pizza Rolls for the rest of my life.â
Eliza snorted with a burst of laughter, playing a few more notes on her guitar. âAre we actually going to start the lesson or are we just gonna sit here and talk?â Eliza raised one eyebrow at him.
âFine, fine.â Alexander rolled his eyes and looked down at his instrument. âWanna play What is This Feeling? For practice?â
âGotcha.â Eliza started the song, humming the lyrics as Alexander quickly joined in.
âSee you next week, Alexander!â Eliza waved as he stopped at the door to wish her goodbye. âDonât forget to practice.â
âWhen donât I practice?â Alexander wrapped a quick arm around her in a hug and stuck his tongue out of the corner of his mouth, making Eliza laugh. âIâll see you next week.â
Eliza watched until Alexander was halfway down the hallway and then shut the door to her room quietly, turning back to her chair. She kept strumming on her guitar. Eliza usually stayed in this room for hours, just to see if anyone showed up to register for lessons.
Eliza had begun to sing when she got distracted by loud shouting in the street below her. She gasped and got up, setting her instrument down and rushing to the large windows. She looked down into the road and saw a girl, about Elizaâs age, yelling furiously at the man next to her. Eliza couldnât make out many details, but they were loud enough that Eliza could hear from a story up.
âMaria, I told you not to make a scene!â the man yelled, grabbing the girl, Maria, by the arm. She yanked her arm out of his grip.
âIâm not making a scene! Youâre the one whoâs forcing me into PDA. I told you enough, James!â Maria yelled back. Even from up there, Eliza could see James ball his fists. Thatâs when Eliza threw open her door and sprinted down the hallway and down the stairs. She could still hear the shouting when she pushed through the door and into the cold January air.
James was in an even more threatening position than before. His fist was closer to Mariaâs face, and she was backing away from him rapidly. He wouldnât let her get away.
âLeave her alone!â Eliza grabbed Jamesâs arm and tried to yank him away from the other girl. James whipped on her, snarling ferociously.
âOh, and what are you gonna do about it, dollface?â James snarked. Eliza was stricken with fear, backing a few steps away. She glanced at Maria out of the corner of her eye, trying to tell the girl to get away while she could.
âG-get away from me. Just l-leave her alone.â Eliza stammered bravely. âLeave her alone.â
âWho even are you?â James stepped closer to Eliza. âWhy do you-â
âJames.â Maria grabbed his wrist, pulling him away from Eliza. âStop it. Sheâs not in this. This is between you and me.â
âFine,â James growled, glaring at Eliza. He pressed a hard, ugly kiss to Mariaâs lips. âI want you home at eight.â And then he stalked away. Eliza could imagine the black smoke pouring out of his ears in anger. Eliza turned to Maria, who, now up close, Eliza could see was very pretty.
Her eyes were shiny and soft, even with the skin under them darker than the rest of it. Her lips were big and dark freckles covered her nose and cheeks. She sighed in relief once James was gone. She locked eyes with Eliza.
âYou okay?â Maria asked, smiling breathlessly.
âYeah. You?â Eliza tucked one hand into the pocket of her jeans. âHe looked like he was about to punch you.â
âHe wouldnât. Not in public at least.â Maria took a deep breath. Elizaâs throat clenched. Not in public? Â âIâm okay.â
âYou sure?â Eliza furrowed her eyebrows. Maria pulled her lips into a smile, trying to reassure Eliza.
âIâll be okay.â Maria said.
âIs he your soulmate?â Eliza asked tentatively. Maria shook her head, scratching her shin with one foot.
âDefinitely not. We dated for a while, but the color never showed up but he wonât let me go.â Maria looked down. Eliza chastised herself for making her uncomfortable. She was quite the people-pleaser, and hated making someone any less than happy.
âOh.. got it.â Eliza looked down too, messing with her hair nervously.
âIâll be fine, I promise.â Maria laid a hand on Elizaâs shoulder as a gesture of comfort, but as soon as she did, they both gasped loudly. Eliza quickly pulled away from Mariaâs touch, her jaw dropping to the ground.
The world was color. Eliza was in shock. Her shirt⊠that was blue. Maria covered her mouth with her hands, staring at Eliza. Â
Eliza couldnât remember what the name of the color was that Mariaâs eyes were, but it was beautiful.
Suddenly, Eliza was swamped with a nauseating feeling. Â She stepped away from Maria, holding one hand to her stomach. Her breathing was shallow.
âY-youâre a girl,â Eliza stammered. How was her soulmate a girl? Â She was straight. Soulmates could be friends, right? Eliza couldnât have a female soulmate. Â She wasnât gay. Her head whirled.
âAnd youâre hella cute in color,â Maria breathed out, lowering her hands to her sides.
âO-oh my god,â Eliza pulled at her ponytail, dragging it over her shoulder nervously.
âIs everything okay?â Maria reached forward to grab Elizaâs hand, but she backed away.
âIâm so sorry to be rude, I just⊠I didnât imagine my soulmate would be a girl.â Eliza cringed, plainly hearing how rude that was. âIâm⊠Iâm straight, so⊠I donât know how this is gonna work.â
âOh.â Mariaâs mood immediately dropped and she looked down. âYeah. I get it. Itâs cool.â
âIâm so sorry,â Eliza frantically tried to patch up her mistake. âI, uh⊠Iâll see you later, I guess.â
Maria nodded and Eliza rushed back into the building, running up the stairs and into her room, breathing heavily. She slammed the door shut and pressed her back against it. She pulled the hair tie out and ran her hands anxiously through her hair. Eliza glanced at herself in the wall mirror. Her face was flushed, and her hands were clammy. Eliza took a deep breath and sat back down in her chair, taking her guitar. She tried to piece together a song, but her fingers were trembling too much to play. Elizaâs breath caught in her throat when there was a knock at the door.
âMs. Schuyler?â The voice on the other side said. Eliza took a few deep breaths.
âCome in,â She put on a big smile. The door opened, and her next student walked in. He was James Madison. He had only been taking lessons from Eliza for a few weeks, and kept it a tight secret, but Eliza didnât mind. Jamesâs friends didnât really like Eliza, so the fact that she was teaching him had to stay quiet. It was alright, though. James was a good listener, and he had a calming air about him.
âHey,â Eliza said in relief, smiling for real. âHowâve you been? Have you been practicing?â
âHonestly, not much.â James gave her a guilty smile and sat down.
âNo shame.â Eliza grinned, pushing the fact that she could see color to the back of her mind as well as she could. âYou ready to start?â
âAlright. Warm ups. Repeat after me.â Eliza smiled and cleared her throat. âIâm going down to the bottom of the sea.â
Eliza burst through the front door of her house, still blown away by all the color. Her heart pounded against her chest. âAngelica! Peggy!â
âYes?â Angelica spun around in her swivel chair to look at Eliza and Peggy poked her head into the room. Eliza stopped for a moment, taking in the color palettes that made up her sisters. It took her a moment to remember what she wanted to say.
âI can see color.â Eliza said bluntly. Angelicaâs jaw dropped, and Peggy bunny-hopped into the room.
âYou met your soulmate?â Peggy shrieked giddily. Angelica beamed. She had found her soulmate years ago, but Eliza and Peggy had never met him.
âUnfortunately, yes.â Eliza sighed. She looked down at her boots, which she now realized had light blue laces and the stars on the heels were silver.
âUnfortunately? Did something happen?â Angelica frowned and cracked her knuckles.
âMy soulmateâs a girl.â Eliza took off her coat and sank into the couch. She untied her shoes and threw them across the room, tucking her legs onto the cushion. âAnd last time I checked, I was straight.â
âAh, thereâs the dry sarcasm,â Angelica moved and sat down next to her sister. She took Elizaâs hand and started massaging it. âJust talk to her. Work through it, Lizzy. Youâll either fall in love or have a new best friend for life.â
âI donât want to fall in love.â Eliza protested weakly.
âDonât sweat it.â Peggy flipped onto the couch. âYou and this girl will figure it out and you two will have happy ever after whether youâre makinâ babies on the way or not.â
âPeggy!â Angelica scolded. Eliza buried her face in her hands and Peggy shrugged. Angelica took Elizaâs hand and started massaging it again. âDonât listen to her. Sheâs just silly. Now, tell us what she looks like.â
Eliza quickly described Maria, from her curly hair down to her long legs. Eliza kept rambling on and on to her sisters, trying to piece together what she had learned and what she could see.
âI wish I could see color,â Peggy sighed dejectedly.
âYou will one day, Pegster.â Eliza kissed her little sisterâs head.
âI know.â Peggy whined. âBut I wanna see it now. You and Angie can see color and apparently itâs so amazing, but Iâm last, like I always am.â
âOi.â Angelica swatted Peggyâs shoulder gently. âDonât talk like that. Youâll see color and fall in love eventually just like the rest of the world. Donât stress it. Itâll be worth it.â
âWhatever you say, Angie.â Peggy rolled her eyes. Angelica laughed, moving from one of Elizaâs hands to the other.
âSo what am I gonna doâŠ?â Eliza asked nervously. âI canât just⊠suddenly become gay and hook up with her the second I see her again.â
âI was never suggesting that you do that,â Angelica replied calmly. The eldest sister always had a way of handling her siblingâs problems better than her own. âStay friends with her. And if you never feel romantic attraction to her - then stay friends. There are a few soulmate pairs where they just stayed friends and it worked out fine.â
âYou sure, Angie?â Eliza fiddled with her small, peridot necklace.
âYes, Lizzy.â Angelica sighed exasperatedly, setting Elizaâs hand down on her lap. âItâll be fine.â
âAlright.â Eliza laid her head on Angelicaâs shoulder. âIâll see if I can find her tomorrow. Get her number and see if we can talk.â
âYou met your soulmate and you didnât get her number?â Peggy slapped Elizaâs shoulder lightly. âWhat kind of romantic are you?â
âA helpless one.â Eliza muttered and Peggy giggled.
âListen to Angelica, Lizzy.â Peggy ran her hands through Elizaâs hair. âYou and this Maria chick will do fine.â
âI believe you.â Eliza smiled. âNow, are you gonna let me get up or just trap me here forever?â
âPromise not to be rude to Maria, and Iâll let you go.â Angelica said sternly.
âI promise.â Eliza said exasperatedly, pulling away from her sisterâs grasp. She waved at them as she walked up the stairs to her bedroom. She collapsed onto her bed and hugged her pillow to her chest, sighing. She stared at all the colors in her room, still trying to remember the name of the one that matched Mariaâs eyes.
