i am so serious when i say heartstopper is the sweetest and most accurate representation of gen z era teenagers i have ever seen in a tv show. like actually. heartstopper casted real teens to play teens, TALK like teens, had no sex or nudity, touches on heavy topics without being overly graphic or intense while still acknowledging the severity of said heavy topics.. doesn't force humor or unrealistic scenarios for the sake of entertainment or comedy... wow. just wow. and the most important thing for me personally: it's not overwhelming to watch. something that's always rang true in my experience of watching teen-focused tv shows is everything is so intense and dramatic that it can be legitimately stressful or triggering to watch certain scenes. and while i know sometimes that can be really powerful to see such raw events portrayed on screen well, it's just really nice how heartstopper is different. it isn't difficult to keep up with the characters and understand what's going on, i really appreciate that.

plus the ost is absolutely beautiful and the little 2D animations mixed in with the real life people is such a cute detail that i am so obsessed with. i am just truly so happy this show exists man, it completely deserves all the hype its received and i think it's just such an important show for this generation to have. in an era where teens have to deal with so much on the daily, and portrayal of teens in media is always somehow exploitative, inaccurate, wrong, misinformed... or just... really depressing and harsh??? to see teens being happy, and actually getting through their hardships and trauma, and having good things happen to them, feels so reassuring. heartstopper just Gets Things Right, and i seriously Cannot express enough how beyond words happy that makes me :)

TLDR: heartstopper is worth the watch

As much as I would just like to talk about the MET Gala tonight, if you haven't heard by now, it has been leaked that the Supreme Court has decided to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision protecting the right to get an abortion in the United States. Make no mistake about it: this decision is the direct result of not just the last presidency, of Republicans doing everything in their power to sow violence against women and minorities, but took decades of groundwork that is the direct result of the patriarchy and white Christian Nationalism. This decision will overwhelmingly hurt women, women of color, POC, LGBTQ+ people, Indigenous women, the impoverished, and countless others. It will hurt us. It will kill us.

I don't know what to do tonight besides be angry, but I want to try to be productive here. What I can recommend is this:

Vote for Democrats in your primary and midterm elections this year. There is no other option. Republicans are literally trying to kill us. They are trying to send us back. We will not let them. Vote blue up and down the ballot this year and every year so we might have a chance at codifying abortion rights and other important issues pertaining to labor, climate, voting rights, etc. I am not asking kindly, and I am not going to make it complicated: vote blue, vote blue, vote blue. Do your research on the Democratic candidates for your primaries, but when November comes, VOTE BLUE. EVERY TIME. FOR EVERY OFFICE.

Bug the hell out of your representatives, no matter what their party. Annoy the living crap out of them and let them know that you are pissed about this and expect to see legislation. That the court needs to be expanded. That Thomas needs to be impeached for his and his wife's involvement in the insurrection. Demand to know what they will do about this. At this point, it's worth a shot.

Please, if you have the means to do so, consider donating to Planned Parenthood and their action fund, the ACLU, the National Abortion Federation, and NARAL, and any grassroots pro-choice fund you can find. Here is an article from The Cut with a list of abortion funds you can donate to right now state by state. Please feel free to add others to this post so others can see them and help out if they can.

This is scary and sad and infuriating. We saw it coming for years but it still feels like a shock. But we cannot let up. We cannot quit. That is exactly what they want, for us to roll over and give up. I get feeling helpless - I feel it right now, too - but there are a few things we can do. But I also get if right now we just need to feel scared and upset. I'm just hoping to turn this righteous anger into something productive.

Save a fanfic writer, leave comments on old fics

There is this a peculiar set of reasons and biases when it comes to NOT commenting on AO3.

They are all false, but here they are:

Do not comment on old fics

Do not comment on each chapter of a multichapter

Do not comment if the author left the fandom

Do not comment if the author doesn’t respond to comments

It can be summoned up as DO NOT ACT LIKE YOU ENJOYED THE WORK AND YOU LIKE THE AUTHOR.

It comes from the idea, that if you leave a comment on my old work, or leave too many comments, I will think you are strange, clingy, and gross.

Readers are imagining it as commenting on an old Facebook photo — only your granny and creepy strangers do that.

That is not the case with AO3.

Writers put their works there for long-term storage, and we expect, wish, and hope that you will like our works and tell us about it.

This all very interesting, not, but why should I care?

This has awful consequences. Fanfic authors feel constant pressure to create more and crippling fear of being forgotten, useless, and being literally kicked away from fandom.

I’m online friends with a few great fandom authors, who wrote storied with thousands of kudos, but ALL of them at some point expressed this fear. Very talented people told me, “I’m not sure if I should have ‘writer’ in my bio. I didn’t post anything new in the last half of a year.”

Some young or entitled readers might say, “Hm, well, they are right. They should create MORE to be relevant. Isn’t that a good thing to push authors to write more?”

For better or worse, life doesn’t work like that. We are talking about real people, who go to real schools, have real jobs, families, and all the other important things outside the fandom. Some of them might push to create more from that fear, but most would only get more frustrated and depressed about the whole fanfic writing.

So, please, if you like the work comment on it.

Even if it’s old, even if it’s a multichapter, even if the author doesn’t have time and energy to interact. Especially in all those cases.

Encourage your authors, and show them your support.

I don’t usually add anything to other people’s posts but I’d like to give a MASSIVE shout-out to @akajb84 and @wondrousdianas for commenting on pretty much everything I’ve written in the past few years, and also to @svgurl410 for making her way through my stuff lately. It means the absolute world to me and it is because of them that I’m still sharing my stuff, and it is because of other people like them that numerous other authors in numerous other fandoms continue to create and share their works.

So please, please, please don’t underestimate the magical power of taking a few minutes to type a couple of sentences into that comment box on AO3 (they don’t even need to be coherent, I swear we, writers, like incoherent excitement :)) and please support the authors whose works you like through commenting!

I haven’t been on tumblr for quite as long as a lot of people but over several years I’ve noticed this interesting gradual sorta,, shift in the general culture? that it went from this mostly depressed, nihilistic outlook where people would regularly joke about hating themselves and being hopeless and depressed, to a wave of vehemence of “STOP hating everything actually the world is Good and you deserve love!!!” type posts, to now, where those aggressive ‘PSAs’ have faded away and instead I regularly see people romanticizing simple things like stars and hot tea and rainy mornings, and waxing poetic about their friends, and just trying to put love out there. and I don’t know exactly what that means (someone who knows more than me could probably say something smart about generational expression and trauma or popular perception of mental health and whatnot), but I do know that it makes my heart very full to see people learn to love the world and themselves by extension, and a whole userbase adopting healthier coping mechanisms, and therefore teaching the younger users to do so as well. I might just be following different people, but I really do think we’ve grown. everyone has grown. five years ago it wasn’t unusual for the next post on my dash to be a scathing commentary on why nothing matters or an anon ripping into someone they barely knew or someone complaining about how pathetic their interests are. now I have mutuals who get excited and spam reblog art of cows and friends I see tagging each other in pictures of frogs and strangers writing paragraphs about how much I matter. it makes me happy. idk. just an observation I wanted to make. I think people are good and everyone’s just trying their best at the end of the day
