I run in the morning two times a week. Sometimes the sun hasn’t even risen yet, depending on what season. But I always run alone, and usually with headphones in. I’ve been reminded in the last month how lucky I am that for as long as I’ve been running, I haven’t been physically assaulted. Lucky. ——— In late August Mollie Tibbetts was followed by a man and after standing up for herself, trying to protect herself, she was murdered. This past week Wendy Martinez was on a run, stopped at a light waiting for it to turn when she was fatally stabbed in the neck and head multiple times. On a Tuesday. Around 8pm. In a neighborhood very close to mine. Apparently the murder was influenced by the use of K-2, or synthetic marijuana. ——— Even on my run today, I encountered a drunk man who started talking to me despite the headphones I had in. As a woman I am always weighing being polite in order to avoid agitation against being ‘rude’ and ignoring or speaking up for myself. The threat of violence or sexual violence is real, so I don’t want to hear it when people ask why women don’t ‘stand up for themselves’ in said moments. I’m not going to stop running alone. Or running in the streets of my city. And today my miles are for Wendy and Mollie.
