A New Era
A New Era
On April 26th of this year ESPN the proclaimed “worldwide leader in sports” did something the typical sports fan never saw coming. On ESPN for two hours the broadcasting company aired an Event called Heroes of the Dorm. Now I know what you are thinking, “Heroes of the Dorm, what is that?” One guess could be that it is a sports competition between different dorms in intramural sports or it could a competition between dorms in fundraising for charities. While both would be entertaining and impactful Heroes of the Dorm was neither of those. It was in fact a live competitive gaming competition between several colleges. Colleges participated in an online tournament featuring Heroes of the Storm a MOBA or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena , they competed for $25,000 in scholarships for each player on the winning team.
I know what you are thinking, “Playing video games is not a sport!” Last time I check most consider Poker a sport so how is this any different? If you still do not think it is then I could go in depth about the training that it takes to make it to the highest competitive level, but that is a discussion for later. For now let’s talk about how cool this is!
First things first, time to explain what a MOBA is and why it is super important to the realm of E-Sports or Electronic Sports. MOBA’s are a team based game that pits five players against five more from the other team. In MOBA’s you have to destroy your opponent's base by going through them and the cpu. The typical MOBA games can last anywhere between 45-60 minutes depending on the level of competition that you are at. MOBA’s are insanely popular and boast several different game that fit in the genre. Dota 2 and League of Legends are the two most popular games in the genre even though they are numerous different ones to play. League of Legends or LoL is the largest of the two with over 67,000,000 unique players playing per month!! Accompanying that was the 2013 World Championship of LoL which was held in the Staples Center in front of over 35,000 fans! Dota 2 a sequel to the first MOBA game Dota or Defense of the Ancients does not command as many unique users as LoL, because LoL is considered the easier of the two, it does host the largest tournament of the two. In 2014 it hosted a tournament called the International since it pulled in the top players from around the world to play for a share of $10 million. This is the largest prize pool ever for a gaming tournament and it even tops the prize pool for the Masters golf championship and The World Series of Poker prize pool. The International 5, the tournament for Dota in 2015 has already eclipsed the $10 million prize pool, it is nearing $12 million and we still have two months to go before it kicks off.
Its evident that MOBA’s have a large player base and enough money behind it to make it more than relevant, but what about spectators? Enter Twitch.tv. Twitch is a website that enables users to stream live game of almost any digital game that player broadcasts to the public. For example if I played a game online or single player I could set it up so that my live game is broadcasted on Twitch via my account that I had set up on the website. “That’s cool what else?” Well Twitch averages 60 million viewers per month and the site gobbles up more primetime internet traffic in the U.S. than any other website except Netflix and YouTube. The crazy part about that is that Lol and Dota 2 combines to make up 38% of that viewership, that is just over 20 million viewers per month.
“What does all of this have to do with ESPN?” With that many eyes, players, and money invested in just these two games it would behoove ESPN to jump into the fray of MOBA’s. Now Heroes of the Dorm was not ESPN’s first attempt to dive into the realm of E-Sports. In 2014 ESPN aired the International 4 Valve’s $10 million Dota 2 tournament on ESPN 3 its internet streaming service. This was a step in what I think is the right direction, due to the ever growing market of E-Sports. If ESPN can secure the exclusive rights to air events like the International 5 or the LoL World Championship such as they did with Heroes of the Dorm it would force a near suspected 15 million viewers. Those are ratings that rivals the likes of the NBA Finals and tops the MLB World Series.
So whether you hop on the bandwagon of E-Sports or not it is coming and it is not stopping. ESPN is in the process of ramping up their efforts in the world of E-Sports by publishing and E-Sports version of their monthly magazine. Which brings me to my final point, if it is on ESPN it is a sport right?

A Year Later*
If you have asked me a year ago from today where would I see my life, I would answer pursing my dreams. Then April 1st happened. Around 9:30 that morning I felt sick. Worse than I felt at any point in my life before. Now fast forward 30 or so hours and I come to find out I have had a stroke. What, me stroke? How? Why? The first few days was pretty much filled with confusion and assuming this would go away soon. Two weeks after it happened I was faced with a harsh reality that it happened. I cried....a lot. So many times in the beginning I wanted to give up, but God saved me for a reason. I am still searching for that answer today. I just knew I was going to have to work hard to get back to my old self, my old life. Little did I know my old life was gone and it never was going to come back. I was on a new path now. This new path scared me. I feel like I am not in control. I am kinda just on it and where ever it takes that is the place God wanted me to go. I was able to share my story with other Stroke survivors recently and I had never felt so great in my life than at that moment. Is this why God saved me? To share my story with others like me? To be an inspiration to others? The old me would have been pissed. Where is my personal gain in all of this? Good thing that me is gone. He was a douche anyways am I right?
Now I am working hard trying to wrap up one chapter of my life and move into the next. Its tough, but the bright side August is almost here. Then I'll have a MA? Seriously? Talk to Jarred in 2010 about getting a Masters and he would have laughed at you. So funny how life works. I took my Tumblr photo outside of the Toyota Center in 2010 thinking man it would be cool to work here. 5 years later I can say yeah it's pretty cool to work here. I for one cannot wait to see what the next 5 years hold.
I recently had an interview for a side job. He asked me what my greatest strength was? I told him I am a hard worker. "Everyone says that, how are you a hard worker?" I paused after he asked. I looked at him and told him about my journey over the past year. His mouth gaped open and the look of astonishment came over him. Needless to say he saw how I was a hard worker. The great urban philosopher Kanye West said " For me, giving up is way harder than trying." This is what I embody. Trying to keep pushing forward is hard, but quitting on the uphill climb is a lot harder.
The stroke on April 1st doesn't define me. The people who I have came in contact with since then do. The overwhelming support that was given to me and that I passed along mean the world. I have met people who's lives will never be the same after their injuries, but they looked to me for strength. Now I see that I am not just doing this for me. I am doing this for them. For everyone who needs a little bit of hope. For everyone who needs that extra push. We can all do it. If you ask me now a year later where would I see me life? I would answer the same thing. Pursing my dreams.
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.-- Jeremaih 29:11

The One Who Knocks by Jonathan Eka Wijaya in Surabaya, Indonesia
College Football Predictions!!!
Native Americans hunted bison in packs because no one man could stop a beast that weight over 2,000 pounds and could run up to speeds of 35mph. Natives would hurl spears or rocks at them to take them down. Others would herd them in groups, chase them off of cliffs and collect their rewards at the bottom of it. Taking on an animal of that stature alone could be overwhelming to strongest of men, but just as David defeated Goliath in the realm of the animal kingdom known as college football anything can happen.
There are an abundance of analogies that can be made from the bison or Native Americans. The bison could be seen the seemingly unstoppable Oregon offense, Johnny Football on and off the field talent, the bruising Stanford defense, Urban Myer’s near perfect game plans at Ohio State, or the most obvious the Alabama Crimson Tide. While the Native Americans could be seen as anyone facing the opposition, but just as one could make comparisons, college football is a beast in its own right when it comes down to unpredictability. Who would have thought that Alabama would actually lose a game? That the numbers 1 and 2 teams would lose in the same weekend and face each other in a bowl game? Or the biggest one being a seemingly unknown redshirt freshman winning the Heisman?
So much seems set in stone like Alabama pulling off the 3-peat (don’t charge me Pat Riley), Johnny Manziel or Braxton Miller winning the Heisman, Louisville winning the AAC, USC will have another disappointing season, or Notre Dame failing to repeat the same success it had last season. Well I say let’s hold off all reservations till the end of the season because just as Gusto said in Ratatouille “Anyone can cook!” I believe anyone can win! Now on to my predications!
ACC:
Winner: Clemson (11-1)
Clemson has the most talent on offense than any other team in the conference. They even seemed to get the “monkey off of their back” with a big late game win over LSU in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Tajh Boyd looks garner Heisman attention in the first week with a game against Georgia and if he happens to fall out of the race early he can surely pick himself back up with an impressive performance at South Carolina, then the ACC championship game. Ultimately the season will rest on how many stops the defense can come up with. They ranked 64th in total defense last season allowing 395.6 yards per game with 156 of those yards coming against the run. If this defense can find a way to slow down the opposing run game Clemson could set themselves up with nice shot at the National Championship. Florida State will be the biggest challenge to Clemson, but that all depends on how redshirt freshman Jameis Winston plays.
AAC:
Winner: Louisville (12-0)
The Cardinals are overwhelming favorites to win the American Athletic Conference coming into the season. That’s a lot of pressure on any team….well this team doesn’t play a ranked opponent all season. Last year they started the season 9-0 before losing 2 straight games to Syracuse and UConn. There are two games on their schedule that could prove to undo a potentially undefeated season, at USF and at Cincinnati. Yes, Louisville should win both games, but as always in college football anything can happen. UL’s biggest strength is Heisman candidate Teddy Bridgewater, if he can consistently perform well against inferior talent the season should cake walk.
Big 10:
Winner: Ohio State (12-0)
The Ohio State University is near a national consensus to win the Big 10 Championship in what would be consecutive years, but thanks to the Golden Pants incident the championship went to Wisconsin. New year, same OSU, Miller back, Hyde back, Shazier back. From the outside this team is stacked but can Urban Navagte them to another undrafted season and a possible national championship?
Big 12:
Winner: Oklahoma State (10-2)
Wait! Wait! Wait! Hear me out on this one! The Big 12 top to bottom is probably the deepest conference in the country. You could make a case for 5 teams to win the championship. Their schedule sets up perfect to win the conference championship. They have TCU, K-State, Baylor, and Oklahoma all at home. Their toughest road game? At Texas. They can afford at least one loss to still have a chance at the championship. To quote Bill Connelly of SBNation the Cowboys are a “plug and play team”. Which means Mike Gundy has created a system that can flourish no matter who plays in it, which I believe to be true.
Pac-12:
Winner: Stanford (11-1)
Oregon and Stanford play each other Thursday November 7th. Ahhh crazy Thursday night games on ESPN…Which means anything can happen!! Up is down, down is up, and fish is potato. Stanford looks to be in the hunt for the national title which I feel they will be even after a win over Oregon on that crazy Thursday night. The Cardinal have a highly favorable schedule in which they play all of the ranked opponents at home. USC seems to be their toughest test, but the game I think they lose. I have a feeling Notre Dame will pull the upset in their season finally. Call me insane or crazy as I am sure you have after my last pick, but when I am right I will be smiling!
SEC:
Winner: Alabama (12-0)
Yes I do believe there will be 3 undefeated teams, I mean why not? It is the last year of the BCS so it would only be fitting. Alabama may actually have the most complete offense in terms of blocking, passing, and running. AJ Mccarron looks to shed the game manager title even though he led the nation in passing efficiency last season. I think the real hero of this team will be running back TJ Yeldon (more on him later). Alabama’s biggest threat will be a trip to Aggieland on September 14th, but a loss to them last year did not keep them from the big game.
Heisman:
Winner: TJ Yeldon
He impressed everyone in last year’s National Championship game where he ran for 108 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown. This year he will not have split carries with Eddie Lacy so the entire backfield is his. He is also running behind an offensive line that could produce multiple NFL draft picks. While AJ Mccarron will garner most of the early season attention, Yeldon will come on late as the closer for the Crimson Tide. Finishing a close second to him will be Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller followed by Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, and Jadaveon Clowney.
BCS Bowls:
Rose: Stanford vs. Texas
Fiesta: Oklahoma State vs. Boise State
Sugar: Louisville vs. Texas A&M
Orange: Clemson vs. Notre Dame
BCS National Championship: Alabama vs. Ohio State
Winner: Alabama
It is almost too easy to pick them to win their third straight National Championship, but a game against Ohio State is anything but that. Nick Saban meets his coaching equal Urban Myer in a battle of heavyweights. I have a feeling this game could rival the Texas-USC battle in 2005. I am giving the deciding edge to Alabama’s tough physical defense.
A big thank you to anyone who has read this thus far!! Enjoy your football season, because you have earned it!!
