Wrapping Up The Semester Reflection

Well congratulations guys we made it through yet another semester of college! Finally we can take a breath and relax. It was a long way of work, research and of course writing and reading, but hey! Here we are writing our last Tumblr post. Here goes…

At the beginning of the semester for RWS 1302, I felt as if I wasn’t going to capable of keeping up and adjusting to the fact that it was a hybrid class. The idea of having our homework posted on Tumblr seemed like a good idea since we were given the liberty to express our thoughts through Gifs. However, I had to learn and accommodate Tumblr’s structure and features. Although I have social media, I have never used it for academic purposes. Each weeks reading response seemed to be convenient for me because of the method we’d use to complete them. The easy access to Tumblr was a plus for this class, because some days I’d find myself to have a tight schedule that would prevent me from formally sitting behind my laptop and completing the assignment. The advantage of being able to download the app to my phone gave me the opportunity to complete my homework on the go or at times submit it during my break from work.  

      The posts that i felt were my “top” work were from Week 12, Week 7, and Week 2. 

In week 2, I felt this was one of my top works because of what I learned from the readings. I expressed my understandings in a very detailed and comprehensive manner. 

-Week 7, helped me understand the many components involved in summarizing and synthesizing. I felt the GIF I used for this response fit the post correctly. in order to have understood the reading or further readings, I looked back on Tarzan trying to find the main points. 

-Week 12, was my final top work from the tumblr posts because of the GIFS used to explain the ideas from that weeks reading. https://jasmineginsights97.tumblr.com/post/159495782443/week-12-reading-response.

I found that using Tumblr for the class was beneficial although a bit confusing during the first few weeks. Not relying so heavily on Blackboard with the exception to submitting the links, was something I found yet again effective. Not to mention , the level of formality present was reduced which allowed an easy going communication amongst my peers.  Nonetheless, this came to change my perception on rhetoric and writing by enforcing the importance of acknowledging your audience as well as structure. Having to decide what pictures or Gifs I would use for each weeks’ posts created some fun when completing the homework assignments. From my first post In week one up until the last post, I came to notice how my posts got more into detail and the pictures/ Gifs seemed to make more sense to what I was stating. 

The knowledge I learned through mixed media helped me relate my posts and enhance the meaning I came to acquire from each reading. I learned that through the use of modalities, one can express their thoughts and feelings through images. At times images, music, and or videos can add more meaning to what one is trying to express. Another benefit about mixed media integrated onto our posts was that using Gifs for instance, allowed the need to minimize textual explanation if wanted. Modalities carry a deep meaning hereby; the lack of text is acceptable to explained a certain emotion or thought about a topic. Using this method enhanced my perception on rhetoric by helping me see the power mixed media contains. This helped me see that t get you message across, text isn’t always necessary and as the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words”.

WEEK 13: Reading Response

       This weeks reading from the article, “ Developing Multimodal Academic Literacies Among College Freshmen”( Gloria E. Jacobs) dealt with exemplifying the ideas behind incorporating multimodals in an academic setting.In doing so, an exeriment was conducted in which Jacobs seeked to prove how multimodals and traditional academic literacies can enforce the learning experience for college freshman. Jacobs results enforced her prior stance by indicating of the students observed seemed to have aquired a greater comprehension when it came to breaking down their topic. With this in mind, jacobs went onto concluding that the use of multimodals along with traditional form of literacies comes to add onto the students way of retaining as well as developing skills to better understand research,arguements,synthesis, as well as summaries. Through the use of multimodals, Jacobs states that doing so, “ [avoids] plagiarism [and] empty sentences” which may result form students lack of understanding.However, this method comes to serve as a guide to help students find ways to interpret their findings in their own modes of communication. 

The information presented in this weeks article can be applied to my major in the way that at times trainees coming into the criminal justice system aren’t trained solemly on textual information while in the academy. As a matter of fact, videos regarding previous incidents and movement tactics are shown to those aspiring to be in law enforcement. Written forms may come to indicate the basics to self defense in a prison setting while in an offender vs officer situation, nonehtless, in order for them to properly learn and apply those skills, they must not only practice hands on but also see exactly how to perform such tasks, which is where multimodial literacies come to play an important part. Therefore, the information provided in the article helps me understand how reinforcements such as multimodals can strenghten ones understanding without the need to feel as if “ writing [ or reading] empty sentences”(Jacobs) due to the lack of understanding.

 Furthermore, this helps me with the AVA project, because  I can come to understand the topic my group and I are introducing through the use of a documentary/ PSA video. I feel haing the opportuniy to use multimodals for this project enhances the knowledge we’ve aquired while conducting our research without feeling completly overwhelmed and bombarded with facts and information we cannot transfer onto our own interpretation of it. 

    Lastly, the first GIF indicates how I felt after reading the article and acknowledging how the information and experiment Jacobs conducted was so similar to what our RWS1302 course has prompted us to do. Secondly, the following gif comes to once again acknowledge how reinfrcements such as multimodals can expand skills and proper tactics. Thirdly, the last gif depicts how a college freshmen(me) may feel when conducting just the basic traditional literacies that at times feel overwhelming. However, this project promts a freedom to choose how we transfer the information in our own understanding which makes this a bit more exciting.

Argument types

Chapter ten of Writing in Transit goes over the many different types of argument and the many more types of ways each argument can be carried out. Basically the way people argue is by reaching their audiences senses, even smell and taste because chefs persuade their customers to continue going to their restaurant. Written, visual, and verbal arguments all have same goal: to persuade their audience to take action of something or create awareness to an issue. However, each modality has its specific method of doing so. Written arguments must have more evidence to convey their message and obviously text heavy. Visual arguments need more graphical images and media than text because the media itself is what is doing the persuading. Verbal arguments are a tad more difficult than the previous two, however they depend most on defending the person’s position. These forms of arguments each have different structures depending on the discipline using it. 

The reading connects to my major because I will be working with all of these modalities. Visual arguments for me is a huge thing because as a biologist I Will be completing many academic posters to show research or to give my position about some issue with the biodiversity of earth or something along those lines. I am actually currently working on a poster for a “poster session,” it is called the COURI symposium. I will attend this along with three classmates and present the information we have acquired in our research lab over the last couple of weeks. 

I would also be writing a lot of arguments based on research, and more likely than not will eventually verbally argue for some issue withing the biology field. “yay”

The reading helps with the major assignment because it allows for me to get a more general idea on what to include on the documentary. Since this is a visual argument, I believe there should be more media than text. Of course it has to be multi-modal per usual, however more videos and images will be used and a couple of descriptive sentences or something related. It will not exactly mimic any documentary you would see on television but it will be a combination of it and a PSA most likely.

Kimberly, I like how you mentioned that EVERY arguement has a purpose. And yes, whatever the purpose may be, it must be capable of appealing to the intended audience. I also liked how you tied the reading to your major and I think its pretty cool you've already started something like that which will be showcased👏 congrats and I wish you luck!

Week 12- reading response

There is no doubt that formats and modalities are a crucial part when shaping arguments. As writers develop their arguments and structure them, they must also attend to maters of design. It help determine how they will present their information whether it be through an exam paper, letter, articles or an email.  There are ample modalities which primarily fuse writting, visuals, and verbal modes of communication, which offer a large array of possible formats for arguments. It may also depend on your discipline and or context your working with. Take for example, when writing an argument in the form of a letter , one must often distill their ideas in to a brief format. The way you use your format and modalities will determine how effective your presentation will be.

Yancy’s article supplements the content from the chapter greatly by expressing the models of composition. She breaks each key expression to allow us to thoroughly comprehend how she is  tying her previous and future information. For, example she talks about circulation of composition, canon of rhetoric and deicity of technology.  Much like chapter 10, Yancy outlines and exemplifies the different types each section has and how it impacts our argument.

According to Yancy, literacy and rhetoric are often treated like discrete entities when in fact they are interrelated.  The rhetoric can intersect and through that interaction they contribute to new exigencies for inventions, arrangements, representation, and identity. “ or they change what is possible.” They compose and delivery which a critical role.

I definitely find changes in my perception of literacy. It’s not just you basic ability to just read and write, its far much more than that. There are ample ways that literacy is tied through everything. There a lot that goes into writing. We have to choose what best medium and delivery is effective for communication , then we have to  create and share those different communication pieces into a media and audience. Both these reading show to prove that literacy is broad in every aspect.

Yancy and chapter 10 impacted my knowledge of multiliteracies/literacy by providing several examples and going into depth about each. We are all used to understanding the simple meaning with literacy but these readings gave us a full picture that is much more than that. Yancy talked about the transformation of literacy because technology changes and the circulation of composition which I was completely oblivious about. Chapter 10 gave me a full insight about modalities and formats.

I totally agree with you on the fact that literacy is waaay more than just the ability to read and write! There’s formats for everything we do and so many ways we can approach one assignment which can be both hectic and exciting ! Week 12 Reading Response

    Crafting effective arguments through the use of visual representations as well as approaching / constructing different types of arguments is important to writers envision their arguements as well as to what impact they come to create. The choice of arguement is crucial to writers because depending on their methos such as  verbal arguments, academic presentations, elevator speeches, PSA, films and videos just to name a few, their arguement could take different stances. For example, the incorporation of modalities will add onto their arguemnt in a way that’ll aid their audience onto invisioning them. Lastly, the importane of design in an arguement is vital to the impact the writer is aiming to create since ones claim will come to  serve as an aid to either enforce or reduce the message you are trying to bring forth to your audience.In addition, the selectiveness of ones modalities can come to raise debate on a one sided issue which then again comes back to last weeks chapter regarding arguements. 

 Yancys article adressed how literacy and rheoric are modes that go hand in hand in a way that within every type of literacy, theres a form of rhetoric that follows along with it. In addition to Chapter 10, the use of rethoric aids the creation of an arguement by adding perspective onto the claims regardless of the discipline.With Yancys article and chapter 10, the importance of arguements, literacy and rethoric as a crafting method come to enhance how one may apprach an arguemt in the near future. With this in mind, literature comes to be seen as subject that takes upon numerous tasks in every situation one takes part in. For example, literature is not simply siting down and reading, literature carries an abundance of responsibilities and tasks that may not be looked upon unless one takes the time to anaylze, but they are still present.

  Furthermore, this came to add onto my perception on literacy because it just goes onto reinforcing how literature contains more than just a book or stategies. Literacy consists of anything that has to do with language, crafting language, crafting arguements, how and why things should and can be approached in order to create a specific effect and or message. This just comes to amaze me how it may seem as a different section to something else but in fact it is all part of one inmense subject that is misconcepted as “ oh just reading”. Lastly, Yancys article and chapter 10 enhance my knowledge on multiliteracy and literacies by explaining how literacy comes in many forms and modes that in the end are all part of one.

WEEK 11- Reading Response

    Chapters 8 and 9 in these weeks reading emphasized on what an argument is, what it consists of and exactly how one can come about effectively constructing one in a particular writing discipline. Chapter 8 specified on “Framing Arguements” which went onto stating how arguments don’t necessarily consist of a winning outcome where one must be right and have the audience agree. As a matter of fact,an arguement must be supported by research and not just solemnly on opinion because as noted in the chapter, how and why will people listen to just an opinion without any evidence to prove the statements?. Similarily, chapter 9 indicates how to crafts these arguements according to the writing discipline. For instance, depending on what effect you want to create to your audience and what fits the arguement, different approaches may be taken regarding the organization in order to fulfill your arguement. 

  Creating arguements applies to my major in the area that in order to be able to introduce something of concern, evidence must be presented before hand. For example, in order to accuse someone such as an officer and or offender of something, the one articulating the arguement must first have evidence that proves that claim. Within the criminal justice system, evidence is a must before someone gets repramanded for such arguements mades towards them. 

   With this in mind, I came about understanding more in depth what a proper arguement is. I previously saw arguements as claims that are biased on ones opinion without the introduction of the otherside. However, within these two chapters, it was stated exactly how in order to craft an effective arguement of any sort, research must be provided to back the claims while not disregarding or making the other position any less credible. In addition, this came to provide a foundation as to how my group and I can approach a stance in our arguement without the need of fallicies as we state the issue at hand for the AVA assignment. 

My first GIF demonstrates how not all arguements will have a clear one sided agreement, as a matter of fact they may come to spark further arguements. The second image demonstrates how the lack of evidence in an  argument may seems as if the statements made are simply lies since there’s no research to enforce the statements being said. Lastly, the third image depicts how opinion based arguemnts will not suffice as an effective stance, there must be more to the arguement.

Advanced Visual Arguement Topic Proposal

    Throughout the semester, my main focus has been to address issues posed within criminal justice,such as: incarceration, sentencing changes , and the mental cognition affected by institutionalization. Similarily,in my Advanced Visual Argument, i’d like to remain focused around those ideas with a slight difference. My topic would involve restorative programs( alternatives to incarceration) and how this may benefit the community as well as those juvenilles who are sentenced and taken to prison at an early stage in their life.This topic is of concern because each year juvenilles  and adults are being placed into an institution and or aquire a crimal record for crimes other than murder, rape or kidnapping. Along with having background of criminal behavior , comes long term issues such as being signaled out by failing to meet societies standards , difficulty reintergrating, employment harships, as well as recidivism. A possible solution to these issues would involve working with the probelms from within the interior to the exterior persona . If programs  such as mediation , community service and or theraphy could be used as a method of fixing criminal behavior, crime rates could come to a decrease and prevent offenders from commiting future crimes.  

   With this in mind, my topic comes to target people within the criminal justice field such as law enforcement officials, counselors, and the general public itself  who seeks to prevent prevailing crime. Through the means of a documentary film and or poster, advocating for this issue seems to be the “ best fit” method to do so. Being that media advocating is a way of getting ones message across and that the majority of the population is jumping on the media wagon, these methods would seem to appeal to the audience even more so than simply a written text. 

The first mage serves as an irony of how victims and offenders may relate, however, through restorative justice programs, their differences may come to a bearable stage of acceptance. The second image implies that programs can provide a turn in direction as to how their life can change completly by proving a second chance.

Week 8 Reading Response

    Chapter 11- Choosing and Intergrating evidence dealt with themes regarding the appropriate use of including evidence within a writing structure as well as determining which was approporiate and relevant. Throughout this chapter, the author presented how evidence can be see and evaluated through numerous means. Evidence can come in the form of data, scholarly articles, charts and so on. Most importantly, integrating evidence onto a writing discourse had to include variety in order to keep the readers engaged, otherwise the topic may become uninteresting to those reading it. With that in mind, evidence must be thoroughly analyzed and one must be mindful of what evidence is being used, hereby, noting that one must not misinterpret what is being examined. Furthermore, evidence comes in different forms whther it’d be an anecdote, quotation, paraphrase, visual and or summay. 

   Intergretating and choosing what evidence serves a relevent purpose is indeed something that my major relies upon. Within the criminal justice branch, evidence is present in almost any apparent situation. Evidence is needed to prosecute an offender or deem him innocence, evidence outlines whether someone is held accountable under the law or perhaps not, which is why it serves great significance. For example, within a probable reason to conduct a search, officers may have the need to request a search warrant. With that in mind, they must be selective as to what eactly it is they are looking out for and take into account that the warrant will specify what their findings must include. Nonetheless, here is when choosing evidence becomes crucial, they must choose what it is they are examining as well as what and how they are going to use that for a relevant purpose. 

  In effect, this weeks reading helped me grasp a better understanding as to howit is I can effectively intergrate evidence within my writing assignment such as the upcoming Literature revirew, without coming across the mistake of dismissing vital information from my sources. As I came to conclude the reading, I established the idea that evidence must be closely looked upon and at times selective as to what it is you want to incorporate without dismissing the important points addressed in the source you came across. Similarily, regarding the Literature Review assignment will be composed of evidence from sources we’ve gathered in order to answer questions we’ve posed bout a certain topic. While doing this, we must take into consideration what evidence we are using and how we introduce it on our assignment without making it seem “choopy” or unorganized, hereby, using the MEAL plan mentioned in the reading. This strategy helped me keep in mind the key points I must touch upon as I write my Literature Review, that is , if I want to efficiently complete this assignment to my best capability, which is nonetheless what I intend to do. However, the reading left me with one pending doubt about the assignment- How will I nit pick what evidence is necessary without dismissing the other evidence provided by my sources? and How can my primamry source involve strategic evidence without reducing the credibility of it? 

   My selection of GIFs includes the representation of how I conclude my understanding of the weeks reading. The first image depicts a man stating” We’re nit picking now”, hereby saying how I feel evidence for an assignment must be. Evidence must be picked out as in what will serve relevance to your assignment. For example you’re no going to pick just any source for evidence, you must selectively pick. Secondly, the following GIF demonstrates how evidence must be closely examined and intergrated onto a specific task, whether it’d be in a career or scholarly assignment. Week 7 Reading Response

This week’s reading on chapters 5 and 6 ( Summarizing and synthesis) dealt with information that aided me into understanding just how to summarize effectively as well as explaining what synthesis consisted of. In chapter 5, the reading explained the different types of summaries as well as the lenght they may be required to be depending on the discipline. On the other hand, chapter 6 on synthesis also geared its way onto touching upon the subject of summaries since, in order to “Mash up” other contents, readings, or ideas as mentioned in the reading, one must first be capable of identifying the purpose and occasion on what is being read. Witht that in mind, synthesis and summary go hand in hand since in order to combine and inergrate ideas, a brief summary must be aquired.

  In addition to the reading, I aquired more knowledge on just how to properly summarize my sources for the annotated bibliography that is coming up in our literature review. Nonetheless, I will find myself having to synthesize my sources as I conduct my review in order to combine similar or distinct idead that apply to my research questions. 

I found that these two concepts tied into my major because, in order to write incident reports, one must know what is important and what isn’t, meaning, one must identify the details to leave out that perhaps aren’t significant. In doing so, the reports are necessarily like a 10 page essay report, as a matter a fact they are limited as to what should be written hereby, knowing how to summarize effectively is vital. 

My  choice of the GIF depicts how summarizing requires dissecting the most important information while keeping in mind that not everything in the text has to be included, only the most vital points.

Week 6 Reading Response

   As any student looking to achieve higher levels of knowledge, reading is a vital concept that cannot be withheld or posponed in order to aquire that insight. Being that reading serves a crucial role in any path one chooses to take part in it becomes something innevitable, something you must do whether you enjoy it or not. With this in mind, often times you may find ways in which doing this task can be simplified or at least not so dreadful. For instance, in my case the process I take in reading content for classes is acknowledging what I must read, the time I have to read it along with the time I can dedicate t each content and section it in parts. By doing this I avoid the dreadful 30+ pages I am required to read in more than one course. Similarily, as I do this I make myself little side notes as I’m reading as well as questions I may have regarding those sections. I find this tactic quite useful because I am not exceedingly overwhealmed although I may have other required readings, and in fact I can always go back and use those notes and questions as refreshers instead of reading the whole chapter once again unless I feel the need to. In effect,using this method encourages me to read content I may not necessarily be interested in since I don’t encounter much dread unless I pospone it and then find myself stuck at a dead end with multiple readings. 

 In regards to Chapter 4: Reading, a way in which I find myself rhetorically reading content for my RWS1302 course is through the use of in depth reading. As mentioned in the chapter, this straegy allows the reader to annotate while interpreting and analyzing the content being read. Nonetheless, these strateges are tactics I tend to use across any reading I do. The use of doing this allows me to feel as if im directly talking and asking questiones about the reading material as chapter 4 goes onto stating.

The content provided by this weeks reading and the information presented through the video CRAAP promted me to think more than just the obvious about reading and resource effectiveness when it comes to the Literature review assignment. For instance, I was accustomed to simply taking advantage of scholarly articles from credible online databases such as Google scholar and JSTOR without taking into the consideration other means of sources that provided equal or greater  credibitily to conduct my research. With this in mind, the reading informed me of different approaches I may take to conduct my reasearch while still mainatining focus on the objectivity of it. Through examples and scenarios, I came to the understanding of how to come about this process as well as determining how and why my sources may be used. Through the video CRAAP, I came to find how a source can be easily dismissed and turn your research paper into a faulty not so credible paper if it does not follow certain specifics that’ll make them valid and reliable. The specifics mentioned in the video were defined as: Currency, Relevance, Auhority, Accuracy ,and Purpose which came to give me more of an idea on how to conduct my research for the Lit review assignment.

W5 Reading Response and Topic Proposal

     The main theme of the reading is Posing Meaningful Questions which means learning how to put in text meaningful questions. The text includes sections where the characteristics, and strategies for writing this questions are explained. The content from the reading connects to my ENLA major because primarily it is about writing, and on a second stance I am person who likes to write about deep issues where learning to pose meaningful questions would be helpful. I have a better understanding of posing meaningful questions because I have read that one should maintain a significance, be specific, and most of them fall into a disciplined area. 

The reading response of this week focuses on the Lit Review, I can assume that for the Lit Review we will be required to generate meaningful questions. The reading prompts me to asky myself questions such as ¨Are you writing a piece intended for scholarly readers only, or is it geared towards a broader public?¨or ¨ Will you be writing for an online or print publication?¨ this is to be able to identify  the medium of publication, and platform where the work will be presented. We have to consider this because when writing the questions the audience, and medium of publication affects how they are more effectively written.  I chose the question mark gif in a dark background because it represents the meaningful questions. For the Lit Review topic proposal I have chosen Strategies For Writing Children´s Books. The second gif is a Dr. Seuss quote that I chose to put becasue it relates to the topic proposal I wrote.

Fabiola, developing questions is going to be an essential component for your major. Hopefully, this assignment will serve as example for future reference when you start writing and continue to go into depth in your ENLA major.  It is true that we have to structure our questions to the  type of audience if we want to be effective while presenting this. Your topic proposal seem like a fun topic to research on. I was given the opportunity to take courses throughout high school that made understand the development on an elementary curriculum, in which I was assigned  to create a children book from scratch. . There a lot that goes into creating these small books , which will be beneficial to learn. I look forward to hear more about your topic. Good Luck !

I liked how you connected the weeks readings to our upcoming assignment! Similar to you, I ask myself the same questions,but more so as in what it is that the literarture review actually consists of. I also question what audience will it be for besides those who share the same interests... Lastly, i find it important as well to know because as you menioned, the medium, platform , and message must be understood by our audience... By the way I feel your topic will encourage you to ask those meaningful questions ! good luck

Des questions significatives

Chapter 3 of Writing in Transit discusses how questions are posed within disciplines. The chapter goes over the type of questions may be asked such as interpretive, quantitative, or fundamental questions about your discipline. These questions are useful in helping you better understand your topic, and become a credible source within your field (e.g. Physicists pose, research, and answer questions about the universe, making them credible individuals in the information they provide.)

This reading connects to my discipline because although I have strong feelings about habitat destruction, I do not know everything about it.  For this reason it is important for me to ask questions on the topic, in order to understand and expand my knowledge of it. 

Since our major assignment is the Lit Review, reading about posing research questions is significant considering we will have to do so ourselves. It was helpful to learn that there are many different types of questions one can ask about their topic. I don’t know about you guys but I find it a bit difficult to come up with questions about something, let alone doing so in order to gain a more vigorous understanding of something I barely understand. But, the reading helped me think and gave me a bit more confidence about coming up with questions. 

Finally, my topic proposal for the Lit Review is Coral Reef Destruction. I previously wrote about deforestation, and in a sense, coral reefs are the sea’s forests.

Kimberly, I completely agree how creating research questions is useful for us to better understand our topic, which will eventually allows us to  become a credible source within our field. They definitely structure how were going to present our research paper. Additionally, it may help us thoroughly understand certain main points within our topic, so we can expand our knowledge. Your topic proposal for the lit review is very interesting. That issue is often undervalued and its beneficial to be informed and  know how to prevent it from being destroyed in the foreseeable future.. Kimberly! I like how you mentioned that it could be difficult to come up with questions because, although it may be like oh okay i’ll ask this or this or that it could be quite difficult. It’s true we don’t know everything about our topic which makes it in a sense kind of fuzzy to ask about something we dont even completly know but i think this assignment will help us with that because as you mentioned, it’ll help us expand our knowledge then we can actually know what it is we are talking about for future references. I believe you’ve got a great topic at hand because many might not regard how not only natural but human destruction is deteriorating these “water forests”.

Week 5 Reading Response & Lit Review Topic Proposal

This week’s reading on Chapter 3: Posing meaningful questions addressed how constructing questions is more than just a random act. For instance, the chapter states how to develop meaningful questions, you must first consider that those questions have some sort of significance to you, what matters to you, and why other should find it important. You may resort to previous questions from other disciplines to stimulate new questions that regard to your intended discipline. Lastly, the chapter mentioned four categories of questions: Journalists “Big 6″ questions which involve the who; what; where; when; why; and how, Interpretative, fundamental disciplinary and quantified. 

      The information provided by this week’s reading helped me obtain a better understanding on how questions can be both implicitly or explicitly addresses within a paper. Meaning, the questions you wish to ask do not literally have to be in a question form, which is something I hadn’t contemplated before. Acquiring this knowledge helps me create questions within my own discipline while knowing I can imply questions I may be concerned about. Similarly, the chapter in its entirety connects to my major being Criminal Justice, in the way that within this major, often you’re left in doubt hereby creating an abundant amount of questions. Maybe a newly imposed policy isn’t quite clear furthermore inclining you to make those meaningful questions that could benefit you and those who may have likeminded concerns. 

    For the upcoming assignment- Lit Review- this reading enforced a concept I thought wasn’t so complicated. I had the idea that creating questions was something simple, however, for this assignment the questions I impose must be more detailed in the form that I may be capable of elaborating without feeling I’m stuck at a dead end. 

     However, I came to question just how do you know when the question is good enough and how is it you can implicitly incorporate a question without the need to literally structure it to be one.

                                     LIT REVIEW TOPIC PROPOSAL

How prison overcrowding may affect the sentencing of offenders in an urbanized area that is prone to increasing crime. 

Using this as my topic for the lit review, I feel I can create an unbiased perspective because, there are two sides to this. Those who feel sentences are too harsh on what they may see as lesser crimes while there’s those who believe certain serious crimes aren’t being threatened properly hereby introducing the idea that this issue could be due to increasing crime and overcrowding. 

Nonetheless, I feel I need more information of what exactly this assignment will require. 

 I chose the first gif to depict how to me posing meaningful questions will require focus and no distractions that could deviate from your goal. I addition, the second gif depicts my reaction upon reading this week’s chapter because I came to find out a question must be composed of more than just yes and no answer to be efficient in the upcoming assignment. Lastly, the third gif demonstrates sentencing which ties into my topic proposal.

Une Analyse

Chapter 7 of “Writing in Transit” explains how analysis is used and explained differently among many disciplines and different types of analytic methods used by each. The main purpose of analysis is to better understand a given piece of data, to go deeper into detail than “the naked eye” point of view. These analyses vary between analysts; one person’s perspective of data may be different from another’s.

This image is a perfect representation of perspectives. I personally think the book’s example of many disciplines analyzing the same article is perfect to understand how analysis may differ.

Being that I want to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, this chapter ties in with my career because I will be analyzing data every day! Ranging from an animal’s behavior, to the tests I will be conducting to find out why the poor creature is suffering, analysis will be a big part of my career. 

The reading helps me understand the current assignment for class in the sense of, we’re analyzing genres – hello! We may be using visual analysis and textual analysis for sure! This chapter explains very well what is to be expected from us when we analyze our genres. Be specific in the content of your selected genres in order to explain your analysis of each.

Finally, I chose this video because it was the first thing that popped into my head when I read “analysis.” Peanut(the puppet), is making fun of a business analyst. He believes a business analyst just looks around the building for two seconds and is done analyzing it, when really the analyst goes much deeper into detail in his job, which explains how someone not analyzing a certain topic will not understand the deeper meaning of it.

Kimberly, I love your use of mixed media in this post. I analyzed the first picture for a long time lol. Having different perspectives on a certain article or information presented is crucial  for analyzing data. It may gives us a better understanding and a more thorough interpretation, so we can correctly compare information. I thought analysis can only be applied to literature but I now see how it can connect to our future professions. Your example of Veterinary medicine , made it clear to understand how it may connect.   . This reading also helped me understand our current assignment.

 Your response to the reading is right on the dot! I like how you mentioned that analysis is more than what we may see through “ a naked eye” , which indeed is true. Analysis covers more than that, and as you mentioned what one person sees may be different that what another may see Just as your first GIF  depicted. Lastly, you’re absolutely right ! Analysis is quite important in your career of interest ! you have to closely examine those little critters to figure out just what is wrong with them and just how you can provide he right help.

Week 3 Reading Response

The main topic in this weeks reading in “Writing in Transit’ is analysis. The book describes analysis as breaking down larger concepts, texts, images, events and artifacts into smaller pieces to get a greater understanding of the topic. Analysis has a huge part when it come to academic writing because with out analysis we as students would not be able to understand data, create a discussion or learn more in our particular field. Without even thinking we use analysis everyday. There are different types of data we analysis: visual, aural, tactile, textual, and quantitative. The most interesting one and the one I analyse the most has to be textual because I listen to music everyday. Without even thinking I break down lyrics and try to figure out what they actually mean.

A lot of my connection to my major are going to be to personal training because that is what i am interested at the moment and it is a lot easier for me to write when I’m interested in a topic. So in personal training there are many things they analysis. For example when they create a new workout plan for a new customer they have to take into account the persons goal, activity level and how many times a week they can workout. Also when macro coaching a person you  have  know how much they weigh, how tall they are and if they want to lose or gain weight. As you are coaching them you would have to have them weigh themselves to see if the macros they are on are getting them to their goals or if you have to make adjustments to the numbers you previous set out for them. So for personal training its more visual and quantitative data that you are analyzing. 

The fact that we are doing a genre analysis made this reading helpful because it gave me a better understanding of what exactly an analysis is. But it won’t just help me with the genre analysis, it will help me with future assignments for other classes. I really liked the way “Writing in Transit” used examples in different fields to give a better understanding to different audiences and show what disciplines fall in each of the categories.

In this post I used two GIFS. In the first GIF it explains how my mind is thinking about everything I analyse in a day instead of doing it without thinking. It also reminds me of myself after I read these long chapters. The second GIF has to do with the personal training portion of this blog and makes me think of somebody asking their personal trainer if they are eating right.

I like how you tied in the concept of analysis to music and decoding what those lyrics actually mean through close examination which in fact touches up on the whole idea of analysis. Also, how you explained your major being personal training and having to analyze people in a way that’ll help you help them effectively is a great way to relate it to your interests ! However, why do you believe this won’t help you with the genre analysis?

Reading Response Week 3

  Lastly,   This weeks reading from Writing in Transit pertained to the overlooked subject of : Analysis. Throughout the reading, it was strictly focused on the criteria that makes up an analysis, meaning, what makes something an effective analysis as well as the types of analysis. For example, the reading explained how throughout the careful detection of an analysis one must focus on the bigger picture. In other words, do not let your audience become confused in the message you’re trying to get across. As mentioned in the reading, often times the writer will create some confusion by trying to analyze a particular piece of a text,an image and or data but somehow get off track and disregard  the purpose for that data in a general perspective.With this in mind analysis consists of how, what and the conclusions of it.  

 As I read this weeks chapter, I found that this concept relates to my major more so than I had thought. Analysis is a broad subject that nonetheless isn’t always a piece of cake. With criminal justice as my major, analysis forms a great part  within any field in a law enforcement. For instance,  as a correctional officer one must analyze their inmates behavior as in, trying to “decode” and or  to see the bigger picture of their actions, changes or their behavior not only to maintain order within the facility but also, to maintain the facilities security, their own  and most importantly - yours. However, as mentioned in the reading, analyzing consists of looking closely and breaking down larger concepts. Nonetheless, using the example of a correctional officer, they must do just that, closely examine the ones under their supervision and their surroundings. In addition, reports of incidents no matter the size must be closely looked over by those who are in charge. In doing so, they can understand why and or how something can impose a problem. If not analyzed, that “small” incident can become something greater that may be much more difficult to control which is why, I found the concept of analysis to be something so crucial within my field of study. 

Lastly, upon the completion of this reading, I understood that analysis isn’t just your thoughts but also the findings within that concept. To analyze one must try to explain to the audience what you already understand and know about whatever it may  be that was looked over because, your audience has no clue what you’re trying to say, which is why you must see it as if you’re explaining to someone who has no knowledge in absolute about your topic. You may know what your analyzing but your audience may not .  In addition, that message and understanding must be able to be transferred onto them with a clear and concise idea of what you analyzed without further confusion. As for my upcoming assignment- Genre analysis- this chapter came in quite helpful , for it went into depth on how to analyze effectively as well as what key points to keep in the back of my mind as I analyzed my genres. These key points include: maintaining  objective, being open minded and flexible as well as that the purpose of the analysis might not always be clean cut but rather, might require a little more digging and require me to step out of the box.  

My selection of gifs goes as follows: the first emoji depicts how you must analyze closely and patiently, the second gif acknowledges how analysis is so crucial within any career in the law enforcement field; and lastly the third gif symbolizes how although YOU may know what your talking about within your analysis, YOUR AUDIENCE may not .

Reading Response

Some main points made in the article “Emerging Personal Media Genres” include the discussion of: how genres benefit a society, how a society can be more complex as the variety of genres grow, and how genres are ever evolving and growing through culture and technology. 

Considering that my major is multimedia journalism, I will be utilizing genres all the time to convey information to an audience. Wether it be through visuals, or text, or pictures, genres are used in our everyday lives. “Genres span the whole range of recognizable forms of communication.” 

After reading the article, I have a stronger understanding of how I can utilize genres to make my message stronger. Like in this tumblr post, some genres used was a picture of a woman taking a self portrait, which is a modern genre used in social media. I believe that using genres will help me with my discourse topic and as well as interacting with others.
