jace was right. “call nine-one-one right now.” out of his pockets, he withdrew a fistful of crumpled napkins. “stick these in your ears. you have to go find gabe. i got this.” he kissed their temple. he whispered in their ear. “eu te amo.” with that he was gone, carving a way through the crowd, doing his best not to hurt any innocents. he found the microphone again, trodding over someone’s limp form. he looked down. it was the dj. his throat bleed profusely. tae had to stand in the puddle of his blood to reach the controls. he screeched into the microphone. the whole room winced from the sound. he couldn’t see shay. he found jace, his face grave. he began to sing. his voice warbled with emotion. he tried to get it together. it wouldn’t work if he didn’t feel it. truthfully, he was rusty. he hadn’t used his siren magic in decades, and he’d never tried to enchant so many people at once. slowly, the crowd’s movement became sluggish. everyone turned to face him. he could see their eyes glazing over as his magic took hold. he instructed all the vampires to come to the front of the room to gaze upon him in all his siren loveliness. the rest, he instructed to stay back. tae could perform for hours at a time. if he stayed focused, they’d be able to keep the vampires enthralled until help arrived.
They smiled at him, and their eyes flashed gold. “We got this,” they told him right before he took off for the booth again. Jace turned and wadded up one of the napkins, stuffing it into one ear. With their free hand, they pulled out their phone and hurried to the bathroom to make their call. They fought their way through and met Gabe there, quickly filling him in on what was about to happen.
“Great,” he said, wiping sweat and blood from his brow with his forearm. He looked exhausted. “And the police aren’t answering?”
Jace, who still had their cell pressed to their ear, shook their head worriedly. “They’re probably overrun with distress calls.” Gabe’s attention went to the hall, his eyes a little distant. Tae had started to sing, but they were too far away to be totally affected. Jace put their other makeshift earplug in. “Hey, asshole,” they banged the crowbar against the wall and Gabe snapped out of it. “Eyes up! Have you seen Shay?”
Gabe shook his head, eyes widening, “She’s not with you?”
She was in the crowd. She had been hiding under one of the tables near the dancefloor, only now she was glassy eyed and pressed to the far wall with all the other innocents, helplessly watching the vampires lumber toward Tae.
