Independence Day 2: Resurgence is the long awaited sequel to the 1996 classic, Independence Day. A fun disaster movie which I consider to be very enjoyable. This movie has the return of the original characters (bar Will Smith) and a few new ones too and the aliens want revenge. So we have to stop them again. So the returning characters are the best parts of this movie, Bill Pullman (who is my favourite bit of the original) is my favourite part of this. I love Pullman in nearly everything he's been in. Jeff Goldblum doesn't seem like he's even trying, he was pretty bad. The new comers are ALL terrible. Liam Hemsworth was poor. Maika Monroe has taken a HUGE step down since It Follows and The Guest, she was also poor. The CGI was quite impressive, the destruction looked cool I guess. The characters, besides the returns, are weak and completely under developed. The first 30 minutes is dull, boring time that was spent introducing characters that you will never care about. Half way through the film, these kids are introduced and they're so out of place! There's too much going on in this film to keep hold of. We have to keep track of about 6/7 different narratives at once, it's all too much. While all the destruction and action is happening, it looks appealing but I didn't feel the full excitement because I just didn't care. And if I were to sum up Independence Day 2 in 4 words it would be "no character, no structure". It's a poor reboot of the original movie, Bill Pullman was the only good part, the rest was pretty much awful. Magnificent poster for @86dfilms new movie, Lattie! About a struggling laborer who is diagnosed with a terminal illness and finds himself being pulled in different directions by his family, unknown assailants, and an inept police officer who believes he was a witness to a violent crime. The Secret Life of Pets is about Max, an ordinary dog who ends up getting lost in New York with another dog who has just entered his life. They end up being chased by an underground revolution of animals, while also Max's friends are trying to find him. The trailer for this movie was perfect, the one which was basically a montage of all these animals, it was hilarious! The main character, Max, is a big boring. The other characters are far more interesting, especially Kevin Hart's character, snowball (in the photo) he was hilarious! I think Hart should do more things like this, because he was quality as Snowball. I don't think the story is quite good for children, I think they'd be able to follow it, but there is a lot going on. There's 3 different narratives in this movie, which I think is a lot for a kids film. Also, many of the characters are extremely under developed. All of Max's friends (besides Gidget who is amazing) are pretty shallow, they're like the minion's from despicable me, in that they're the best part of the film, but they have nothing to them really. They provide the comedy. And they provide the comedy well. I was laughing so much, the pug and the sausage dog were hilarious. Also the soundtrack is really good. I loved hearing Bill Withers and Queen all in one film! I did slate it a lot more than I should, but the secret life of pets is really enjoyable. Kids will enjoy the humour, and I think adults will too. So I'm going to say it was pretty solid, I enjoyed it so I'm giving it a B! #bluraycollector #cinephilecommunity #secretlifeofpets

The Conjuring 2 is James Wan's second instalment in the Conjuring franchise, this time involving the famous Enfield haunting. Basically the same thing is happening, a family in need ask for the help of the Warren's. This film is, in my opinion, the scariest movie I've ever seen in the cinema. I was paranoid walking home, I was scared to go in my home without the lights being turned on first, and most importantly I was blown away at how good this movie was! ALL performances were on point, Ed and Lorain Warren both being portrayed brilliantly once again, but the child actress in this film was perfect! She was amazing. The first hour of this film is just pure nail-biting tension. Everything is set up so well, in a scary way. There were jump scares, but all of them felt earned because of the use of magnificent cinematography! The tracking shots are stunning and the imagery is terrifying. There's this one shot, my favourite in the film, which holds Ed Warren's face for about 3 or 4 minutes and (out of focus) in the background is some really scary stuff. My problem is, like the first, it's incredibly predictable. It has the exact same structure of the first movie, so I sort of knew where it was going. But the scares were genuinely scary, I was jumping all over the place. And I will never, EVER look at Nuns in the same way. Conjuring 2 was god damn scary, the only reason I think it's better than the first is because it was more scary. It did its job better than the first. The Conjuring is based on the true story of Ed and Lorain Warren, basically old-school ghostbusters. When a desperate family suspect that they are being haunted by an entity, the Warren's are called into action to save them! SPOILERS WILL BE IN THIS REVIEW. I think this is probably one of the scariest movies of this century so far. The opening scene has no relevance to the rest of the film, but is so good setting up the characters of the Warren's. They are really relatable characters and I think they're performed really well too, as well as the rest of the performances! The entire family in need of help are all fantastic actors! The story is extremely cliche and there's nothing in this movie you haven't seen before. However it's executed in a way that most modern horror is not. With brilliant cinematography and lighting, the conjuring is one of the most intense horror films of our time. The exorcism at the end of the movie is nothing shy of epic, with brilliant make up design on the mother in the family, she looks scary as hell during that exorcism! The film has its fair share of jump scares, I usually hate them, however the director, James Wan, earns his jump scares by using the first half of the film to build pure tension like the infamous hide and clap sequences! Unfortunately the film is extremely predictable and it lets the film down for me. But the conjuring is quality, can't wait to see the second one tomorrow! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of The Shadows is the next movie in the turtles franchise, where Shredder has returned and he seeks pieces of a device that can open a black hole to another dimension and the turtles must stop him. I wasn't a huge fan of the first film, it had its moments. To be perfectly honest, I feel exactly the same way about this movie too. Now the turtles are really good, they have chemistry which i think will be fun for kids to watch. It has humour which children will really love, and even I chuckled a few times during this film. I also really liked this whole thing with turtles and how they aren't really accepted in society, obviously they're huge walking turtles who are ninjas. So they do bring that up, and it was pretty cool. On top of this the moments where stuff is going down are really enjoyable, it's really cool to watch and there was an epic scene when the turtles were floating down the Amazon river. Unfortunately absolutely everything other than this, is diabolical. The writing is cringeworthy sometimes, the musical score kind of sucked in my opinion, the side characters were truly awful too. Especially Casey Jones who needed way more screen time. There's another villain besides shredder who is also terrible, as well as the huge warthog and rhino characters. Everything else in this movie seems underdeveloped, it rushed into the story too quickly in the first act and gave us little time to appreciate a lot of the characters. TMNT 2 was just a 'meh' movie in my opinion, it was incredibly rushed in the first act, side characters are all under developed and the writing is pretty bad in some scenes. The Nice Guys is Shane Black's latest movie, a neo-noir crime comedy with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. Gosling is a really bad private detective, Crowe is a guy who you'd give money to beat people up. They come together to work a case. Nothing more will be spoiled. This is hands down the best film I've seen all year. Ryan Gosling gives his best performance since Drive and Russell Crowe gives his best since probably A Beautiful Mind (2001). From start to finish I was completely entertained, my eyes were glued to the screen. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe have the best chemistry I've seen all year. These 2 were making me wet myself with laughter, every scene I was crying in tears of happiness. There are tonnes of lines which I could quote for years! The story is actually a really interesting look into, not only 70's America, but also the pornography industry too! The relationship these characters have with Gosling's daughter is also incredible! She is not a typical little girl who swears, she's actually of use in the movie and the main characters wouldn't have got anywhere without her. I think she's magnificent. The film looks great, portraying the 70's really well thanks to amazing set design as well as costume design. The soundtrack was awesome too, with great 70's classics including one of my favourite songs, A Horse With No Name by America. Guys this film is absolutely hilarious! I was laughing from start to finish. It had great performances. Great music. Great set and costume design. Florence Foster Jenkins is the true story about, probably, the worst singer ever. Meryl Streep plays Florence, she's an aristocrat, so she's absolutely minted with money. One day, she decides to go into classical singing because music is what formed her life basically. But things are quite surprising because she literally is awful at singing. Streep is marvellous as per usual, Hugh Grant as her husband is also great. But the absolute show stealer here is Simon Helberg. He is just magnificent, every scene he's in had me laughing so hard! A combination of Streep's awful singing and Helberg's hilarious facial expressions had my gut wrenching with laughter. The chemistry between all 3 characters is really what carries the movie, watching them interact with each other is just perfect in every way. It's been long since I've been in a cinema and heard a crowd laugh so loud. Unfortunately, other than this, the film is pretty dry. Hugh Grant has a relationship with another character which is really under developed and not of any interest. And once the film reaches a certain point, after a huge concert, I kind of just wanted it to wrap up. It was a bit too long. But like I said, when these 3 characters are interacting, the film couldn't be any more funnier. It's filled with great performances, hilarious moments and it made a very enjoyable watch. A Hologram For The King is about Tom Hanks, he's works in I.T and flies over to Saudi Arabia so he can present his businesses new computer system to the King. He's sort of lost his way because of recent problems and he meets people in Saudi Arabia who help him become himself again. I really enjoyed this movie from start to finish, the very opening is funny yet when you look back at it at the end of the film, there's a lot more to it. And that's what I loved about this movie, there was a lot more to it than there was on the surface. Tom Hanks was incredible, he's just so versatile. You watch Forrest Gump then this directly after, you won't be able to see the same Tom Hanks. His driver, who takes him to work every morning, is hilarious, adding a fantastic comical element to the movie and also adds a really cool soundtrack too. Not only this, but it is probably the most beautifully shot movie I've seen all year. It looks stunning. There are wide, landscape shots of the Arabian desert which made my jaw drop because of the sheer beauty. The direction is fantastic too, like I said, we get a beautifully shot film as well as a really interesting look into their culture. Hanks meets some interesting people along the way, like Hannah, who isn't really needed that much. She kind of felt forced into the movie, as well as this romance Hanks has. The film was a bit too long because of a consequence of needless things. A Hologram For The King is a very good movie, it's a lot deeper than it seems, it's funny, beautiful as well as interesting too. X men days of future past is probably one of my favourite Xmen movies! Because Bryan Singer (who did X1 and X2) had to sacrifice his first 2 Xmen movies, so that the 3rd was never made. That is courage. Because X men the last stand did suck arse and Singer took away his 2 awesome movies in order to have Last stand gone by making Days of future past. (Pretty hard to explain) So we're in the future and the mutants are all being wiped out and the only way to save them all is to send Wolverine back in time to stop the sentinels from being created! The sentinels are the big machines that are killing the mutants, so if they never get made, the mutants never get wiped out. First of all the combination of both casts from the original Xmen movies and First class is awesome! There is a moment where Patrick Stewart and James Mcavoy are face to face and it is mesmerising! By far the best moment in the movie. I was sat in the cinema completely speechless at this moment. Also, I am the only person who prefers Fassbender and Mcavoy as Prof X and Magneto, to Mckellen and Stewart! Honestly, Fassbender owned the role of magneto and gave one of the best performances of the year! The climax is so intense aswell because the future of the mutants is at hand and the stakes are just so high that they can not fail at that moment in time! Also the very idea of this film is awesome. This story and film is Bryan Singer saying "Nope! This is my franchise!" Now I think X2 is the best Xmen movie, but it'll never have the same tone and feel as this entry. My only problem with this movie is that X 1 and 2 had to be destroyed in order for X3 to go too. And it sort of put a blip in the entire franchise. Guys days of future past is hard to explain without using major spoilers so I won't spoil anything for those who haven't seen it. But if you haven't seen this I recommend this film, as it is awesome! The cast rules, the story is so epic and has a really touching message and the climax is tense as shit. But this film did affect the whole franchise and I didn't like that. The Angry Birds movie is about Red, a very very angry bird. He's a bit of a misfit in his town and nobody really likes him, but then, he doesn't like anyone either. However things change when the pigs come, Red teams up with his anger management group to take them down! This film was a huge surprise to me. First of all, I had no idea the cast was this awesome. Peter Dinklage, Sean Penn, Jason Sudeikis and Josh Gad! All the voice acting was on point, Sean Penn doesn't say a word in this film, but he's the best character by far. Jason Sudiekis as Red is really great at his sarcasm, Josh Gad born to voice act, he was great as Olaf in Frozen and he was awesome as the yellow one in this. Even Peter Dinklage was great in his surprise role. I also commend the marketing in this film, sounds weird because the trailer was awful, but it gave nothing away at all. All the jokes in this film landed on me, I laughed so much. The best jokes weren't given away in the trailer, which is something Zootropolis did earlier this year. Unfortunately the first act is really weak when it comes to characters. I didn't like any of them. I think Red is supposed to be relatable in this first act, but he's just an arsehole in my opinion. The last act completely makes up for it though because it is absolutely epic. The birds are being slingshotted into the pig city and all the destruction is glorious. Bill Hader as the King pig is really good, but the character is just terrible. The Angry Birds movie is probably the biggest surprise I've had all year, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I anticipated. Our Kind Of Traitor is from the same author who wrote Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy. It stars Ewen McGregor, Stellan Skarsgård (can't spell it), Damien Lewis and Naomi Harris. When McGregor and Harris are in Morocco, they bump into Skarsgård, a Russian mafia boss who wants to escape that lifestyle. Harris and McGregor are stuck between the Russian mafia and the British MI6 whom they struggle to trust. I really enjoyed this movie, I thought it was really gripping. From the opening of the movie I thought it was really uniquely shot. The look of the film is not gritty but actually quite sickly. Some people find this really cool, unfortunately I thought it just looked horrible. Also Ewen McGregor and Naomi Harris weren't that good. I know they can both act. Trainspotting is one of his best performance, he was outstanding in that. Harris was also great in Skyfall. I feel they under played this. Once I got past these 2 problems, I found that this film was really interesting. Skarsgård gives his best performance since The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Damien Lewis is outstanding as he is in most things. The story is magnificent too, I wouldn't be surprised that it's the authors of one the greatest books of all time. The last act had me glued to the screen, it made me care for the Russian traitor and his family who he cares for so much. The film knew what it wanted to be too. When it was tense, the film was gripping. When it was sad, I felt really depressed. And when it was funny, I laughed. I like a film that gives a range of emotions. Our Kind Of Traitor was a really good movie once you get past its problems, which do seem to improve as the film goes on, and is a really enjoyable drama about what we value. Sing Street is from the same director of Begin Again, about Connor. He's got a rough lifestyle, he's just moved school and it's terrible. He meets a girl who lives across the road and makes a band with his mates to impress her. I was tapping my foot from start to finish, this is easily the best soundtrack I've heard all year. It's absolutely magnificent, music from the heart of the 80's, Duran Duran, Huey Lewis, Phil Collins, can't beat it! And then the original dogs that are written for this movie are absolutely incredible too! The actors in the band are really good, they all give magnificent performances. Especially Connor's brother, he steals the show. I loved watching Connor and his brother bond, his brother basically teaches him about music and it's so fun to watch. The romance in the movie is also really good, the girl is amazing at acting. My only problem with the film is that about 3 of the band members are severely under developed and they don't get enough screen time. However I was also surprised at how funny this movie is, I was laughing a lot at this film. It's also a fantastic commentary on life in 1985 Dublin, Ireland. Watching his families struggles is really quite bleak and adds multiple layers of emotion. Although it was very feel good, it also has those really sad moments which hit home. Sing Street is one of the best films I've seen all year. The main characters are amazing, the performances are amazing, the songs are amazing and more giving Sing Street an A. #bluraycollector #cinephilecommunity #singstreet

X-Men First Class is basically the actual origins of how Professor X and Magneto meet, as well as the other characters. But Kevin Bacon is thrown in the mix and he's threatening to destroy the world. This is one of my favourites in the franchise, forgetting the other characters and starting with a fresh cast was a strong risk but Matthew Vaughn pulled it off and made one of the best entries in the franchise. First of all I, personally, believe that James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are the best pair ever! These 2 work so well together and I think they have some of the best chemistry in the entire series. I think the direction is just as good as Bryan Singer's and far better than Brett Ratner's. The action sequences are outstandingly shot by Vaughn, he just knows what he's doing with action movies, Kick Ass and Kingsman back it up. The characters are developed so well, mystique, played by Jennifer Lawrence, is amazing too. I love all the characters in this movie, Rose Byrne is awesome as Moira MacTaggert, she's a badass female character. Seeing all the superheroes try and develop their powers is so cool too, the epic scene where Magneto is trying to turn the huge satellite is perfection. And even the end where you see some certain characters turn on each other is just awesome. Some moments do feel forced, like how Professor X ends up in a wheelchair, and the Wolverine cameo too. But other than that, I love First Class. It's an awesome movie, awesome performances, awesome direction, awesome action sequences and it's got a really cool villain too! X-Men: Wolverine Origins is the, well it is what it says on the tin, the origins of Wolverine. Him and his brother played by Liev Shrieber go through time and eventually become split apart. Unfortunately after a really tragic loss, both mutant brothers fight each other and so we have the story of Wolverine got his metal claws. I hate this movie so much. It's so bad. The only reason this film doesn't have an F grade is because I think the performances are really good. Hugh Jackman, like I've said in the other reviews, owns it as wolverine. I even like Liev Shriber as his brother. But they take all the interesting things about these characters and somehow make them boring as hell. The first like 30/40 minutes of this are some of the most dull and uninteresting film making I've seen. I honestly hate the boring romance between Wolverine and his girlfriend. The chemistry between Wolverine and his brother (forgot the character name sorry) is poor. The depiction of Deadpool is notoriously terrible. They got the merc with a mouth and took his god damn mouth away! One of the greatest characters in all of comic history was ruined. The film is a tragic attempt on telling a story that was given to us in X-Men 2! Even the opening scene which is meant to be gripping and intense, is ruined because of awful child actors. Admittedly, the last action sequence is epic with the bad version of Deadpool. However the tension of the scene is lost because of, like I said earlier, poor characters and story. And don't even get me started on Will.I.am as the cowboy hat guy. Just an awful casting choice right there. Wolverine Origins is the worst X-Men movie there is, it's extremely boring and unfortunately lets the whole franchise down. Civil War is about the aftermath of the avengers movies and also the Captain America movies and the destruction they brought to the world. Because of this the government feel they should be contained and it divides the avengers. There's more to it but I won't spoil it. So all the actors and actresses return to fulfil there roles, and they're all (once again) fantastic! Seeing all these ego's in one movie creates an intense, funny and dramatic action film which will be a future classic. I was Team Iron Man from the start because I preferred the characters on his side, but the arguments given for both sides are really convincing! The film is really well directed too, the action sequences are perfect. The hand to hand combat felt like something from a Jason Bourne movie! And that huge sequence with all the characters fighting is easily the best superhero showdown I have ever seen. It is just perfect. Like I said earlier, all these ego's make it hilarious and intense at the same time. I also have to acknowledge Tom Holland as Spider-Man who is the best character in the film and the best portrayal of Spider-Man yet. He's just that perfect blend of both Peter Parker and Spider-Man which Toby McGuire and Andrew Garfield didn't give us. The first half is so interesting too, we get the awesome political side to the story, then the second half is an all out action fest. My only problem is that film had an actual villain who was just terrible in my opinion. The villain just took me out of the civil war. Other than this Civil War is epic! The performances and characters are awesome, the direction is awesome, the musical score is awesome, and Spider-Man just stole the show!
