patrick dempsey as jack kennedy in âjfk: reckless youthâ
âjfk persuaded his family and friends to act in a âpseudo james bond movieâ that was filmed by robert knudsen, a white house photographer. according to knudsen, jackie persuaded secret service agents to drive to the front of the house, jump out, and run toward the house looking frantic after kennedy came off the yacht and walked up the pier and shots appeared to ring out. the president clutched his chest, fell flat, and red liquid spilled from his mouth (probably tomato juice) as the others stepped over his prone body. kennedy did not realize, however, that two reporters were tailing the presidential party in a speedboat. they witnessed at least part of the high jinks and reported them the following day.â

lem: august 15 â venice: we also got our pictures formally taken with the pigeons altho we had a hard time making them have any part of kennedy or the food he offered them.
lemâs caption: âkennedy & the only pigeon he could attractâ.
âhe had a rather narrow face and his ears stuck out a little bit and his hair wouldnât stay put, but all that added, i suppose, to an elfin quality in his appearance. but he was very active, very lively elf, full of energy when he wasnât ill and full of charm and imagination. and surprises - for he thought his own thoughts, did things his own way, and somehow just didnât fit any pattern. now and then, fairly often in fact, that distressed me, since i thought i knew what was best. but at the same time that i was taken aback, i was enchanted and amused. he was a funny little boy, and he said things in such an original, vivid way ...â

âone evening, i remember it still to this dayâl thought iâd stop by his office to discuss a few things with him, and during the middle of the day, there was always a point to where he would take about thirty minutes to just catch his breath. so lâd gone down and sat in mrs. lincolnâs office, hoping iâd catch him before it was too late, but then the phone rang and the white house operator said, âpresident kennedy wants to speak with general clifton, please call his office. mrs. lincoln handed me the phone and i said, âyessir?â he started going on about nothing in particular, and i didnât quite understand what he needed from me, so l put the phone down and walked into his office, knowing he was by himself. it was the funniest sight; he was laying on his back on the floor, his feet propped up on the edge of his desk, the phone to his ear, saying, âhello? hello?â and i must have given him quite the shock. he said, âclifton, how did you get here so fast? iâm on the phone with you. i laughed and i said, âi was just outside. i didnât know what you were talking about, jack: and he smiled, sticking his hand out-which was a gesture that he wanted one of his foil-wrapped cigars i would always keep on me at all times for him-so l lit him the cigar, and he put one hand behind his head and said, well, i was just, i just wanted to know what you were up to. come, sit down, howâs the family? want some coffee?â

jack and lemâs trip to europe memorialized by lem in his scrapbook
âhe was in terrible pain. he couldnât get through the days without thinking of kathleen at the most inappropriate times. heâd be sitting at a congressional hearing and heâd find his mind drifting back uncontrollably to all the things he and kathleen had done together and all the friends they had had in common.... after kathleenâs death, jack had terrible problems falling asleep at night. just as he started to close his eyes, he would be awakened by the image of kathleen sitting up with him late at night talking about their parties and dates. he would try to close his eyes again, but he couldnât shake the image. it was better, he said, when he had a girl in bed with him, for then he could fantasize that the girl was kathleenâs friend and that when morning came the three of them would go for breakfast together.â

the house that jack built
In 1936, Joseph Kennedy Sr. sent his sons Jack and Joe to the 40,000 acre J-6 Ranch in Benson, Arizona. Jack, who was 19, had just returned from a long hospital stay because doctors thought he may have leukemia. His father thought the warm weather in Arizona could benefit his health. He and his brother worked with a crew building adobe offices (seen above). The ranch owner, Jack Spieden, called it "The House that Jack Built".
