This week is just making sure everything is in our sketchbook and making sure we have all the necessary information in the right place. I have a lot to print out and some stuff to catch up on, so I have a lot to do to sort out my sketchbook for the final hand in on the 30th May.

We are back from Easter last week, and having de-stressed myself, I quickly made the paper pattern necessary to start making my final piece, which I have started today. All my construction notes will be in my sketchbook as I am putting them all together for easier reading.

For the last two weeks I've struggled with turning my toile into a paper pattern that worked for me. I've been complicating things a lot and I've been getting really stressed out over it. I think over Easter I need to take some time to just de-stress myself and catch up a bit on my sketchbook if possible.

I had my toile fitting last Tuesday, which went really well. I was quite nervous about it but I got through it really well with the support of the other people in my group (more about the fitting in my sketch book). For this week, I need to concentrate on getting the changes made to my toile finalised, then turn the toile into a paper pattern I can work on.

Monday half day I made up my kilt toile today, starting at 10am and finishing up as college closed at 9pm. It felt like a very long day and I realise that I definitely need to make sure I have enough time to make to make the final piece to the best of my ability.

My pattern book has arrived, so whilst I can't get into college today, I can work out the maths for it and read the pattern itself.
17/03/17 - Friday Whilst I’m still waiting for my pattern book to arrive (which should be tomorrow), I decided to try and make a patch, as I’ve never made one before and Fiona wanted me to try make one. I decided to use a pattern of an eye because she specifically said that she liked that design in my moodboard.
14/03/2017 - Tuesday I’m still waiting on the pattern book (hopefully arriving this week) so today I caught up on some more sketchbook work today. Kelly-Ann was in today, so I asked her opinion on the red samples. She also agreed that number 3 looked best. I spoke to Fiona and she wants me to buy sample number 3 as the red fabric, so tomorrow I’m going to buy the black material and the red material for the kilt. I also spoke to her about how she wanted the kilt to fasten, as she thought a buckle might be a bit dangerous on stage. She wants a smooth leather looking strap, so I'm thinking about a few poppers or hooks and eyes. I ordered 9 samples of leather as well, so we can talk about and decide how she wants the apron to look. They should be arriving Thursday-Friday this week, and I can talk to her next week about it. Marie discussed making some paper patches for my fitting, so that we can see scale and design ideas over it. Fiona said that she'd like me to have a go at making patches, but also mentioned that it was a "later process", so that I don't lose focus on the kilt.

My fabric samples arrived two days ago, so this morning I’ve compared them to my fabric sample for the base of the kilt, and got the opinions of my group on which they think looks best. The samples are (in order on the first picture):
1) Polo Curtain - Red - £7.50/m 2) Suede - Mulberry - £6.99/m 3) Carnaby - Rouge - £12.99/m 4) Panama - Rosso - £8.99/m 5) Opulence - Brick - £14.99/m 6) Cotswold - Crimson - £12.99/m 7) Pall Mall - Scarlet - £9.99/m
I asked for my groups opinions on which they thought looked best. Their opinions are following: - Elise: likes 6 and 7, however 5 is her favourite - Ellie: likes 3, thinks this is the best option because it’s got shine, but not too much of it
I also asked Hayley, the design assistant for Clockwork Orange, and she agrees with Ellie; number 3 would be the best choice. Hayley also mentioned that I should compile a list of questions I have for Fiona, rather than asking them as I think of them, so I will look through my sketchbook and think of some questions to ask her when I see her.

So I've completely read the supplement guide on how to make a traditional box pleated kilt, and unfortunately it refers to the book 'The Art of Kiltmaking' [written by Barbara Tewksbury and Elsie Stuehmeyer, first published 2001] for a lot of the instructions (where they are the same for both knife pleated and box pleated kilts). Having looked online, I've managed to find a copy of the book for around £30 (which is cheap considering the next lowest price I found was £100+), and have purchased it, although I don't have an estimated arrival date for it. Because of this, I won't be able to have a proper toile made up for next Tuesday, which is when Marie wanted me to go and fit the actor. I shall email her and let her know, hopefully this is okay as I can't do anything to change it. In the meantime, I'm going to look at red fabric samples to go inside the kilt, and find other items that I will need, such as hair canvas and cotton lining. I will also email Fiona and ask her what sort of closing she wants the kilt to have. The traditional closing is straps and buckles, however it is not clear on her design as to how she wanted it to close.
06/03/17 Today was the Monday half day again, so my group got together for a few minutes to just talk about how we were doing, before getting on with what we needed to do. We all seem to know what we need to be doing, so I think we're all doing great at the moment. I now have my actors measurements, so I started looking for patterns for how to make kilts. I found a few for knife pleated kilts, but I want to make a box pleated one. I tried to look in the library for any patterns but it was to no avail. I then looked online, and the picture above is the best one I've found. It not only gives you a brief history on box pleated kilts, but also shows you how to make a traditional box pleated kilt, with diagrams. (A link to the PDF version of this supplement. 04/03/17 I worked up some samples to show how the box pleating would work. The first picture is just black fabric pleated, to give an idea on how the colour would work. The second picture is of a piece of cord that I had in a scrap box. I pleated this piece to see how well the fabric holds its pleats, as well as how it would look. Both samples are in my sketchbook for further reference.

Today was a half day, and whilst other groups of people were going through the assignment brief with Marie, I decided to stick in my moodboard research that I had gathered after getting my design.
I put together: - a double page for kilts - a double page for patches - a double page for chains - a single page for boots - a single page for t-shirts
I looked at pieces that would be sourced because it helps me gather a better understanding of the character and what sort of personality he has/ the personality we are trying to portray.

Yesterday I had my talk through about the assignment brief, and then got together with the Droog group for the first time. We had a look at each other’s designs, and discussed ideas with Fiona and the design assistant. When looking at my kilt, I had found pictures of kilts that had coloured inserts in the pleats, and brought that forward as an idea to bring a pop of colour to the costume. Fiona and the Droog group thought it was a good idea, and I shall try to make samples over the weekend to show them again on Monday/Tuesday. Later in the day we as a group decided that we’d discuss the colour red together, as red is in all our costumes. Fiona had said she wanted the red to be different hues, hence why we are going to look at red together (to ensure we get the same type of red). The rest of the group also proposed the idea of having the coloured pleats only on one side of the kilt, as their designs all had asymmetric colouring on it. I brought the idea to Fiona and she liked the idea. I will add this to the samples to try make over the weekend so we can see how it works.
I am working on A Clockwork Orange, and have been given the design for the character Dim, who is one of Alex’s Droogs. This design (drawn by Fiona Chivers) has the following components (I have also said whether I’ll be making the piece, or whether it would be sourced): -Kilt (making) -Bomber Jacket (sourcing, but embroidering on top) -T shirt (sourcing) -Hat/Balaclava (sourcing/may not be included) -Boots (sourcing) The big make I have is the kilt, which will be made of a heavy black material.
