Jeff’s hand on my shoulder snapped me out of my thoughts. My gaze left the wall and found him, his grin offering both comfort and unease.

“Yeah?” I said, trying to pretend I hadn’t spent half of his hand-job staring at the wall.

“That was fucking awesome,” he breathed, forehead stained with sweat as he pressed his clammy lips to my temple.

I smiled and scrunched up my nose to hide the discomfort.

I loved Jeff but that didn’t mean I had to love whatever this bullshit was.

I already knew what Shauna would say if she was here. “Of course he called an intimate moment ‘fucking awesome.’”

The mere thought made me laugh. Jeff raised an eyebrow and his smile faltered, I waved it off.

December 28th, 1996.

Dear diary,

That’s dumb. “Dear diary” like I’m some fucking lovesick teenage girl who’s pouring her heart out with a glitter pen. In other words, Jackie. She’s been unresponsive for about three weeks, I think. The other girls talk about her like she’s dead. She’s not dead, she’s Jackie. They just don’t seem to understand that she’s going to wake up. It’ll probably just take some time, but once I get her make-up perfect and her hair in a side-braid, the way she likes, she’ll wake up. I know it.
