BTW the Cutter's Practical Guide has (more than?) 10 parts, and seems to cover more areas than I possibly could have thought up. Their patterns also apparently a bit... strange to follow along with, but I'll have to report back on that. (I imagine it's a lack of familiarity with some popular/dominant sewing knowledge at the time, which I also lack but will hopefully be able to find if necessary.)

I really like that Tatterdemalion thinks he's better than everyone else; it's a feature, not a bug. And I really like that he's absolute dogshit at playing this down, and dogshit at pretending to be less pretentious than he is. One of my favourites is the line he says when you choose to go after The Book of Proper Speech in the Stacks:

"Never put much stock in talking properly," says Tatterdemalion with a shrug.

(I can't post a picture, because I'm pretty sure it's part of the groups of text that got changed to excise Tatterdemalion's name after, well, you know. And, not to mention that it's the Duchess who goes with you, typically.)

Like it's such an out-of-place thing for him to say, given the way he very obviously speaks from the very beginning. He does swear, sure, and he tries to talk in a more relaxed manner, but it's just very apparent that he's lying through his teeth.

And speaking of, I love that he's dogshit at lying! He's halfway decent when he can dance around a lie, but he's not a good actor, and a straight-forward lie comes about as easily as... well, I would say a rock falling upwards, but then there's Risen Burgundy to account for. He's not even that great at hiding things: not his feelings, not his eyes (you see them at least 3 times before the big reveal, if you take all possible opportunities to), not his past — he's honestly more than a bit lucky that his mission and past are things that you just... wouldn't really have any reason to suspect, for the most part.

I can't even tell if he thinks he's good at it or not — I think he finds it distasteful, if I'm honest. Comes with being born into a panopticon, I suppose.

Partly this whole thing does make the text of Morningstar hit just so well for me. I don't happen to know the text options that show up if you don't pursue all romantic options with him, but in the one where you do, he may as well be saying he loves you. He can't, especially not now, bring himself to say something like that — he's still trying to convince himself he can shuck it all off as easy as the day's dirty clothes, and that they'll be taking him back as he was (or, at minimum, that he can make himself okay with being devoured entirely).

He finds out about your position as the Director, finds out about what vital role you've played with the Creditor (though who's to say how much he has already found out from your Apocryphal histories), and it's almost like you've both been playing at being something less than you are. He becomes almost a bit shy! Still in his own way, of course, and no more avoidant than before — less, if anything.

You can still play, though — none of it's real, even as the two of you sit in an alternate version of your own home, and it gets harder to pretend he knows where the line between it all being a game and mattering far too much is drawn. Harder to pretend that he didn't cross that line ages ago, far, far before he's extended an invitation at Apocryphal Balmoral...
