Sam Winchester x Ex-hunter!Reader
Backstory idea ; Sam and you were friends, in fact you assumed you were more then for a short while in high school. But that was childish, literally you guys didn't do much beyond hand holding and one kiss behind the bleachers. However he went to college and you were looped into your mothers family business for a few long gruesome years until you felt like it drained who you are and were, so you did the mature thing and left. That was also something only Dean really knew, You and Dean wound up meeting on a mission and worked together for convenience and since you knew Sam he treated you like family. So naturally you and Dean kept contact, you only ever heard about Sam from Dean so it a mix of sibling banter and honest opinion.
!No spoilers, no specified monster, Dean is missing and Slow burn.!
A/N ; So this is a test post, I do want to post with more fandoms but This is also me kind of seeing how well the story comes out. Both in writing and with people viewing the post. I would kind of love making this story into a multiple part, hence why it ends the way it does, but tbh if it doesn't land then I am drafting the other parts for myself <3
It is 2:45pm on a friday.
Sam was stressed, he lost Dean in a mission and he couldn't do this alone. He needed a second person there to help him. Not cause Sam was weak but because the only plan him and Dean had involved one person being a distraction and the other to sneak up to make the final blow, though now that he was sat thinking he realize that was exactly why the monster took Dean in the first place.
Sam had only managed to get Dean's phone as he disappeared without it, unlucky Dean but Lucky for Sam as he had access to the last things Dean did before he vanished.
Same began checking through the call history, nodding as he saw a lot of back and forth with his phone number, grimacing every once in a while seeing Dean's voicemails being sent to their dad's phone. Then there was a number he didn't recognized, he decided to dial it without thinking twice on it. Maybe it was a lead, He thought to himself.
The phone rang a few times, Briing, Brring, briing, before a click.
"Heyy, Dean. How're things going with the hunts?" Your voice rang through, with the sounds of chopping.
Sam almost froze for the moment, what the fuck was Dean doing with your number??
"Dean..? Hello? You better not be messing with me-" You began to grumble out, not really sure if this was a serious or joking call.
"Uh, It's not Dean." Sam finally managed to speak, his voice almost gravely with uncertainty.
"Oh," Your voice cut through, Sam could only sigh as he begrudgingly ran a hand down his face.
"So- Uh, You know about Dean?" Sam murmured with a wave of shock finally washing off.
Your voice didn't come from the phone for a long moment, the pause speaking volumes.
"Alright, You don't need to answer then-" Sam sighed out with a groan, "Important thing is, I can't find Dean but I found his phone."
"Ah, So you thought I was a lead? Sorry, I haven't talked to Dean since last Wednesday about some case." You apologized over the line.
Sam hesitated as he had to shift around his idea and plan, "Fuck it, I gotta ask. Are you a Hunter?"
You went silent again, before this long and almost dramatic sigh left you. "I Was a hunter, quit a while back and bunkered down."
Sam was now the one who was silenced, the idea almost drove him mental but he held his tongue, he had more important matters to worry about.
"Can you come back onto the field?" Sam finally asked, knowing if anything those are the words you were most likely to dread hearing.
You let out a grumble and groan, the sound turned static through the phone as Sam sighed. Expecting a no.
"Where are you." You finally spoke up, causing him to almost jump upright by the question.
"What?" Sam muttered softly before shaking his head, "No, I mean. We're out in some small town- I'll send you the location." He stammered out as he damn near fumbled to open Deans phone to send you the location.
"Alright, I'll be there in a day at most." You stated almost immediately after the chat ping rang through the phone.
"It's a day drive from most cities nearby, how are you-" Sam began, but before he could question further you had hung up the phone. Maybe he overstepped by basically asking where you lived, he supposed that it was fair and all since you were a retired a Hunter, You probably didn't want Hunter's coming to your doorstep whenever they have trouble.. ... which is what Sam was doing.
He ran a hand through his hair, grumbling at himself for being so helpless in this situation. Pocketing Dean's phone for now.
He decided since you weren't going to show until the next day at the least then he could go out for a night drink, maybe Dean was onto something and not just on something every time he praised a beer after a stressful day.
Since he had the impala he had made his way to the vehicle, the door closing with his breath hitching at the silence that followed, "Okay.. just gotta make it through." He murmured under his breath.
Shifting the gear, pressing the peddle, everything he did war careful and calculated up until he came close to the pub nearby.
By the heavens above, what was he doing.
Instead of pulling over and into the parking lot, he kept driving and only slowed down to grab a music tape, Popping one of Dean's albums into the slot.
His hands wavered on the steering wheel as he hesitated, but he continued to just cruise.
It was maybe a half hour maximum of driving around the entire town, playing music as he let his eyes linger around.
Watching as some kids got dropped off the bus, going home and others going out together.
He had to hold his breath before sighing, just when he was going to focus on driving, a phone began buzzing. Sam jumped in the drivers seat, he was so confused as that was not any ringtone he knew-
"Shit, shit, shit." Sam muttered as he steered with one hand for a moment, Dean would kill him later, he used his now free hand to reach for Deans phone in his pockets.
"Hello," Sam greeted whilst answering, putting the phone between his cheek and shoulder, now putting both hands on the wheel until he found a place to pull into.
"Yeah, Hi," You murmured in a bit of confusion, "I packed and got my old stuff, I can make it there by mid afternoon tomorrow."
Sam murmured a bit before checking the time on his watch, "Okay, wow and it's only 3:57."
"What can I say? I work fast." You scoffed lightly in your words, though it came out more like a half chuckle.
"Alright, thanks. When you get here I can show you everything me and Dean have found so far." Sam mentioned as he finally found a parking lot to pull into, when he set the Impala into park he sighed or relief. finally holding the phone with a hand.
"Oh hey, I was meaning to ask if you have eyes on the monster?" Your question was one he knew was coming eventually.
"Well, that's the bad news, we haven't really got a location on it. We just have a pattern and an idea of what it is.." Sam murmured, an almost questioning tone as he didn't know how you would really respond.
To be honest it didn't seem like you knew how to respond to this either, Silence fell over the phone line beside a humming vehicle on your end.
"You're doing a bait thing aren't you.." You murmured finally, Sam sighed heavily.
"Yeeah, yeah. It's been our only plan so far, before we could even set up the plan Dean went missing." Sam admitted finally, his spare hand moving over the steering wheel before he held on.
"Alright, If I end up next then I am haunting you in the most annoying way possible." You huffed through the line, luckily he still heard the vehicle engine on your end so he assumed your were still on your way.
"That's uh, kind of fair." Sam admitted with a nod of his head, "I will have to deal with you I'm assuming?"
"Yeah, I'm going to switch out your spices with sand n' dirt." You muttered a bit to yourself, almost sounding proud.
"What the hell?" He exclaimed softly, "Like any packet or shaker I get?"
"Yeah, Probably nothing Malicious but I'd make sure your on your toes." You admitted like it was a fine line, he couldn't help but chuckle, that'd be something.
"Yeah if that's how things worked." Sam sighed out as he slowly let his hand drag along the steering wheel, glancing around the parking lot.
"I'll fucking make it work, just go with it." You retorted lightly over the phone and he chuckled once more, "I'm serious!-" You scoffed to his light laugh.
"My bad, my bad. I'll take you serious I swear." Sam scoffed lightly in his words, "So should I let you get back to driving?" He chimed in a sarcastic tone.
"Mm, Sure. Highway is getting dark in a few hours, I'll call you when I'm close." You hummed in reply, causing Sam to hold in his disappointment.
"Alright, I'll talk to you tomorrow then." Sam murmured with your quick goodbye chiming through the phone, causing him to let out a long sigh.
Of course he didn't go back to the Motel right away but he at least sent you the room number and Motel name so you could find it the next day, he instead spent most of the late afternoon looking for the Monster and hopping from one library to the next.
When he could barely see the road in front of him he had decided to finally get to bed, it was definitely sometime around midnight. Pulling the impala into the parking lot before he put it in park, turning the engine off as he took the key back. Rubbing his hand through his hair as he headed up to the Motel room.
Using the key to unlock the door, muttering some of the information he read back to himself.
He walked into the room with a half stumble as he almost forgot about the doorway lip, closing the door behind him with a huff. Taking a singular glance along the room as he set the Keys down, that was all he had the energy for as he fell onto the bed.
Eyes too heavy to keep open any longer as his stressing probably also helped drain his energy of the day.
