With headphones in her ears reading her favorite Haruki Murakami novel aloud, Koemi sluggishly began making her way home from another shoot. Modeling had seemed like such a breeze when she was younger, it was the only reason she had accepted the offer from the stranger that had approached her on the streets when she was a teen. Well, that and, he had called her beautiful. Now that she was equipped with the knowledge that it required a large amount of time devoted to just staying still, she wished she could go back in time and warn herself. Aside from that, it was a means to satisfy her ultimate goal of becoming a fashion designer, and she would do anything to see her dream come to fruition.
Koemi sighed, the heat was beginning to work her into a sweat as she continued dragging her body along. She began fanning herself with her right hand to cool off when she noticed the polish on her pinky nail had chipped. She stopped in her tracks and quickly reached into her pocket to grab her phone. She was just about ready to give her nail technician an earful when she witnessed a young man slam head first into the sideview mirror of the car beside her. There was a moment of silence before Koemi burst into a fit laughter. She wasn’t even going to bother and try to compose herself at the moment because tears had already began streaming down her face. In the process of wiping them away she accidentally pulled out one of her earphones just in time to hear the man call her a “fucking dumbass squirrel.”
The immediate change in attitude was almost uncanny, she had gone from zero to a hundred in mere seconds. “Who are you calling a dumbass squirrel, you street rat.” She replied in a eerie deadpan voice. Koemi was one of the nicest people you would ever have the pleasure of meeting, until you pissed her off. Her eyes darted towards the object still rolling across the street and she quickly chased after it, scooping it up in her arms. “You want this back?” She asked, dangling the skateboard over the edge of a nearby bridge. “You better apologize or I’m letting go!” She demanded, glaring at the man with a pouty face.
Was she laughing? She was laughing. She was fucking laughing at him. Jack's eyes narrowed into angry slits. There wasn't an ounce of concern present, but being one who didn't want anyone trying to coddle him for something that would mostly likely only bruise he was only expecting an apology. "You're not going to say 'sorry'? I think I'm entitled to hearing that from you," he mumbled as he pinched the tender bridge of his nose. It wasn't swollen yet, but he sure hoped it wouldn't look like he got into a fight with someone before the handful of interviews he had set up for the week. He'd borrow Amari to cover it up or something...
Jack's attention was focused on his nose, his hand, and the asphalt underneath his ass when Koemi spat back an insult. Taken back, Jack's eyes shot up, not as wide as the moon but wide enough to signal some sort of surprise. The expression lasted seconds before impatience and annoyance took over. "And who are you calling a street rat?" Okay, he compared her intelligence to that of a wild rodent but how could he be to blame when it was her who walked out into the street?
Koemi was thinking faster than Jack who was finally pushing to stand on his feet. He was mid-brushing the bits of gravel off his jeans when he realized what she was going for. His skateboard, which was scooped up into her hands and held it dangling over the side of the bridge. "What the fuck?! You don't threaten peoples' personal belongings!" Jack yelled from across the street. That was totally unfair to use his skateboard as a bartering tool to get an apology from him. But Jack was ever stubborn, throwing his arms out and slumping his posture half-defeated. "C'mon, I don't have money to buy a new one, lady!"
