“thank you, thank you. but i mean, now, back to the original problem — how am i gonna get the unicorn to begin with? i don’t know how max would feel, honestly. something tells me he’s not much of a poop guy. but that’s alright, if it’s rainbows, i can do it.”

“i feel like that’s the kind of thing that you can find on the black market, but all of that’s more so on the internet these days rather than in some dark alley in the city.” jackson explained. “max doesn’t seem like a poop guy. andy’s a poop guy. there can only be one.”

“excellent idea, wes. when you get the unicorn we’re gonna test this out. how does max feel about collecting samples of unicorn poop in your apartment?”

“uh — horse food? unicorns are like horses, right? they can eat that stuff? i don’t know. i’d figure it out, though. i’d smuggle it into my apartment and figure it out.”

         grace spared a glance over her shoulder as jackson settled into classic buella cushions and a double duvet, looking soft, and at home. for everything her house lacked in warmth, grace overcompensated in cottons, fabrics, and throw pillows; it was smothering the issue.  “ hey, ” she echoed back, striking a match on a pink dragon fruit candle. this was a therapy session, after all. her dressing gown was tied precariously around her waist, silk sliding over her legs as she settled across from him and tucked her feet in neatly. “ boy problems, then ? ” her smile was sympathetic, without the pity.

jackson breathed a sigh of relief and pleasure at the smell of the dragon fruit candle, one of grace’s signature scents. she changed them up every season so that she would never be too predictable. she always came back to dragon fruit, though. “not a problem for me, but for you maybe.” jack said, rolling over and looking up at the ceiling. “so, i already told you i broke up with finley, that’s old news.” jack set the scene. “but since then, things have... escalated.”

“I haven’t touched anything in 6 months, Jack. Almost seven.” He told him, feeling a sense of pride appear. Henry didn’t like to brag about his sobriety, but he was extremely happy with himself and how he resists the urge everyday successfully. He was only telling Jackson because he wanted him to know he was different now, better. However, it wouldn’t be fair to blame his behaviour solely on the substances; that was some of him too. Henry couldn’t suppress his laughter as Jackson suggested keeping it a secret from his friends. Only because this was Jackson. “Whatever you want, Jack. I support it.” He told him, squeezing the arm that was around Jackson tightly once he had said his piece, deciding against telling Jackson about the text he had sent Aristotle earlier.

a proud smile came to jackson’s lips when henry revealed how long he’d been sober. henry had had fits of cleaning up while they were together, the longest being for a month and a half before he fell off the wagon. “’m proud of you.” jackson murmured into henry’s skin, another kiss placed on his chest, directly above his heart. jack settled back into him then. “i’ll probably tell hennessey. she was one of the few people who knew we were together before. she gets me the most out of everyone, i think.” jackson explained. he wished more of his friends could be supportive, but he understood why they weren’t. besides, why waste the time of getting them upset if this wasn’t going to be anything more than a hook up? jackson really hoped that it would be.

“Oh, c’mon Jackson,” Henry chuckled as Jackson tried to defend him. “Don’t defend me, I know what a piece of shit I was.” Henry found that it was best to embrace his mistakes rather than ignore them, that way he can try his best not to repeat them. Tangling his fingers in Jackson’s hair as he kissed his neck, a small smile appeared on Henry’s lips, then as Jackson lay on his front, Henry ran his hand up and down Jackson’s back in a gentle motion. “Good.” He whispered softly in response to Jackson. They remained in silent for a few moments, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere they so rarely experienced. “I can’t wait to see how your friends are gonna react to this.” Henry finally spoke. He always had a feeling that he was one of all of Jackson’s friends’ least favourite people, but he didn’t blame them. Looking in retrospect, Henry was definitely not his favourite person either.

“i know it too,” jack started, looking up at henry from his position on his chest. “but i’m willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. that you’re better now.” he spoke. he knew that the bad times weren’t always because of henry himself, but rather because of the substances he was hooked on. he hadn’t asked for confirmation, but he could tell that henry wasn’t using. there was a certain light to his eyes that jackson hadn’t seen in a long, long time. at the mention of his friends, jackson visibly scrunched his nose up in distaste. “what if i just, casually, didn’t mention it?” jack smiled at henry, trying to convince him. “it’s not technically lying!” he said. “maybe grace or andrew. definitely not aristotle. we both know how that’s gonna go down if he catches wind of any of this.”

“I’m not just saying this because of… us, but you deserve a lot of good, Jack. A hell of a lot of good.” Henry told him, sitting up in his bed so he was now looking down on Jackson. “You keep getting yourself into these situations with shitty people; I don’t know how you do it.” He told him, hinting at himself in reference to ‘shitty people’. Henry was well aware he had been one of the bad people in Jackson’s life, he still wasn’t all that good, but he knew he was better than he was back then, maybe not good enough for Jackson yet, but Jackson seemed to think so. He was glad Jackson came round last night. “You’re better off without him anyway, like I told you the other day.” Henry smirked as he made a slight reference to their conversation the other day – the day he kissed Jackson.

the atmosphere of the room suddenly became very serious and jackson hoped that it wouldn’t become so much so that their blissful day in bed would be ruined. at the sound of the jackson deserved better movement leaving henry’s lips, jack brought the covers back up to his chest and he sighed softly. everyone always told him that he deserved better, but never how to get it. it wasn’t fair. “stop it.” jack spoke at the first implication that henry was one of the shitty people in his life. while a lot of things went down between the two, mostly bad, jackson never regretted his time with henry, and he wasn’t going to now. jackson scooted closer to henry, three shallow kisses placed in the crook of his neck before his arm lazily draped over henry’s torso. he wanted to tell henry that he didn’t have to feel sorry for everything that happened before, that they could start fresh, but jackson couldn’t find the words. “i think so too.” jack breathed, finding comfort in the sound of henry’s heart beat right beneath his ear.

drew sat down the wrapper of the cupcake she’d just eaten, licking the remnants of icing off of her finger as she looked at the person standing above her. “ ’d you want one ? ” she inquired carelessly.

jack bit his lip as he looked down at the cupcake in question, looking up at drew. “are they peanut butter?” he asked. they smelled like it. "i can’t, i’m allergic.”

“Got you all to myself for the whole day? Aren’t I lucky,” Henry mumbled, shifting closer to Jackson after he did the same. As Jackson placed a kiss against Henry’s chest, he couldn’t stop himself from lifting Jackson’s head with his hand and placing a soft kiss against his lips. Pulling away to hear Jackson speak, Henry rolled back onto his side, leaning on his arm for support again. “No problem,” He smirked, running his index finger in circles on Jackson’s chest. Henry knew that even if he wanted to turn Jackson away, he couldn’t. There was something about the guy that always had Henry compelled in some way. “I hope I don’t kill the mood but, what happened with that guy you were seeing then?” He asked, looking up at Jackson whose eyes seemed to be glued to the ceiling at the moment.

jackson’s cheeks turned a rosy shade of red when henry gushed about them spending the day together. “you are.” he smirked, his eyes trailing over the different molds in the ceiling as he listened to henry’s breathing. he felt completely and utterly peaceful there. then, suddenly, the peace was ripped away when henry inquired about finley. jack knew that it was a conversation that they were going to have to have, he’d just been hoping that it wouldn’t be so soon. “he had this thing with his best friend from before, and..” you kissed me. jackson couldn’t say that. “i just didn’t feel like i couldn’t live without him.” jackson shrugged his shoulders. that’s how you were supposed to feel when you were in love. that was how jackson felt about henry.

whenever jackson had a problem that he couldn’t bring to andrew, and in this case definitely not aristotle, grace was his go-to girl. this wasn’t necessarily a problem in jackson’s mind, however, he did need to get the events of the other night off of his chest. for that exact reason, he was paddling up the stairs in grace’s home to her bedroom, his eyes immediately alleviated by the beautiful colors on the walls. “hey,” jack smiled, kicking his shoes off at the door and cuddling into the left side of her bed, his common place there in her room.

Noticing Jackson examining his body, Henry followed his gaze and noticed he was looking at the hickies he had placed on his body, causing him to chuckle slightly at the thought of last night. For Henry, last night felt like a blur. Not like the blur he felt when he was always high or drunk when he was with Jackson, but a good blur. Time seemed to have gone fast and slow between the two. Henry actually had Jackson’s feelings on his mind last night, rather than just his own. “Good,” Henry laughed after hearing that Jackson slept well too. Seeing Jackson’s cheeks blushing caused Henry to smile. Not smirk – smile. It felt genuine being with Jackson this time round. Henry prayed he wouldn’t fuck it up, but he wasn’t sure if he could guarantee that. Jackson was such a good guy and didn’t deserve to be crushed again by Henry. “Got any plans for today?” He asked, using his free hand to lift Jackson’s, lacing their fingers together.

it was no secret that henry had been all of jackson’s firsts. his first relationship, his first time, his first love. but now, jackson felt like he was looking at henry for the first time all over again. and in a way, he was. this henry, the sober one, was completely new to jackson. “yeah.” jack breathed, a shy laugh escaping his lips a moment later. jackson rolled over for a split second to check the alarm clock on henry’s bedside table, seeing that it was just past nine, he took the opportunity to relax. “i’ve got work at four, but until then i’m all open.” he told henry. as he turned back around, he got a little closer. a smile came to his lips when henry laced their hands together and jack leaned down, placing a soft kiss to henry’s bare chest before sighing contently. “thanks for not turning me away last night.” jack spoke a bit more seriously, looking up at the ceiling. they both knew that it was a definite possibility.

Hearing Jack’s morning voice caused a smile to spread on Henry’s face, causing him to realise how much he had actually missed it. Turning on his side and placing his hand under his head, Henry’s attention was solely on Jackson. “Yeah, I did.” He told him, his words completely authentic. Henry didn’t understand how he was feeling. He was happy to be here with Jackson, he was glad that he had come round last night but at the same time he felt he should have sent him home, told him he wasn’t thinking straight, and he thought that he shouldn’t still have his number. Alas, here they were; lying in bed together during the early hours of the morning and Henry couldn’t think of anywhere else he’d rather be. “How about you?” He asked, smiling down at him.

the smile on henry’s face comforted jackson. it made him feel whole, knowing that he’d brought that smile to henry’s lips. he missed that feeling. he took the opportunity to look at henry then, all of him, and there were light bruises trailing all the way down to the bottom of his torso where the sheet covered him. it made him wonder what he looked like, and from just what he could see, henry did a number on him. he wouldn’t be able to be shirtless around anyone else for a long while, and somehow, he was okay with that. “really good.” jack smiled, the only thing redder than the hickies adorning his body were his cheeks. he’d definitely got the answer he’d been looking for last night when he came in, asking for a simple kiss. henry was still the only person that made him feel like he was flying and falling at the same time, a feeling he craved whenever he was away from him. even now, six inches apart, jackson was unsure if he should get closer. he felt at complete bliss with henry, but he’d never been more cautious in his life.
