Journal 4 -Â Intercultural Skills in the Business Context
In this session the teacher assigned to my team a study case to analyze a cultural conflict, our topic was about “GERMAN AND INDIAN VENTURE”
Depending on the dimensions proposed by the author Hofstede, I think these two cultures are difficult to compare, each one has different features:
The German society is a truly Individualist one. Small families with a focus on the parent-children relationship rather than aunts and uncles are most common. There is a strong belief in the ideal of self-actualization. Loyalty is based on personal preferences for people as well as a sense of duty and responsibility. This is defined by the contract between the employer and the employee. Communication is among the most direct in the world following the ideal to be “honest, even if it hurts” – and by this giving the counterpart a fair chance to learn from mistakes. And about the Indian culture, is a society with both collectivist and Individualist traits. The collectivist side means that there is a high preference for belonging to a larger social framework in which individuals are expected to act in accordance to the greater good of one’s defined in-group(s). In such situations, the actions of the individual are influenced by various concepts such as the opinion of one’s family, extended family, neighbors, work group and other such wider social networks that one has some affiliation toward. For a collectivist, to be rejected by one’s peers or to be thought lowly of by one’s extended and immediate in-groups, leaves him or her rudderless and with a sense of intense emptiness.Â
The employer/employee relationship is one of expectations based on expectations: Loyalty by the employee and almost familial protection by the Employer. Hiring and promotion decisions are often made based on relationships which are the key to everything in a Collectivist society.
My proposal solution is to develop an open mind from both parts (in this case from the German and Indian people); putting in practice this aptitude would help them to understand their cultural differences, avoid this kind of issues and of course, let the communication flow.
On the other hand, when it is strongly necessary to live together with a foreign culture, as it presented in this case, I consider crucial to develop the “curiosity” when you evolve this quality you are also evolving “an open mind”. The curiosity works as an impulse to know and learn about new things and inside this ambit it brings a lot of benefits.
Be curious through the “observation”, is really important in the professional field; as a Mexican I see that when we are “curious” we ask a lot, when we don’t understand we ask and when we already understand we ask again just to confirm and be sure but sometimes, in the professional field, when we are working together with a person from another culture, this feature could be offensive for them because they could interpret it as a lack of attention, apathy and also that you are not capable of doing your job, so I consider as a first approach the “curiosity through the observation” this could help you to understand their behavior, also to act according to their behavior and learn through this, could be an “ extra bonus”
