This poem was written by African-American poet Gwendolyn Brooks. It comes from "The Anniad", a mock epic poem that tells the story of a Black woman and how happiness is impossible for her; the only thing the young character has are dreams and wishfull illusions, which ultimately lead to disappointment. I am well aware of this context; still, I thought it fitted Will, and also Mike, a character living a disenchanted and frustrated life. What he could have lived in another life without Will.

I encourage everyone to go read the poem, it is so beautifully crafted!!!
