jack, lily and zoe west (picrew by alohasuhicore)
Zoe Kissane from the Jack West Jr Series by Matthew Reilly. At least how I envision her. I mean it was said that they didn’t look that much like normal soldiers but they still need some kind of combat webbing to carry around all their stuff… Man it’s difficult to draw them. I try Jack or Lily next.
been inactive 4 a while and I bet you thought I’d draw some popular fandom stuff but alas here we are again
Shipping Pooh and Stretch is my life rn ‘♥’
A few things about Seven Ancient Wonders and the Jack West Jr/Huntsman series as a whole which I am currently rereading… SPOILERS OBV
It needs more love. Like, where my Matthew Reilly fans at??? I’ve read all of his books (I’m pretty sure) including the Huntsman books with Three (something) Cities now in my possession waiting to be read as I reread the rest of the books so I can fully appreciate the new one…the Scarecrow series, Contest, The Great Zoo of China, Temple, The Tournament, Troll Mountain (this one was a while ago), and Hover Car Racer (are the mini books just the same story orrr???) so I am ready to have a rousing discussion on the badassery and detail and intricate universe of his novels
In 7AW: there are a few scenes that kill me and need to be addressed and those who’ve read it probs know exactly what ones imma discuss
The scene where Big Ears sacrifices himself for Lily will never NOT make me cry. I was at the swimming pool cafe waiting for my mum to finish changing and reading that scene and I had restrain myself from letting tears slip in public. It’s friggen heart wrenching. I don’t often use that term to describe stuff bc it’s weirdly formal but BOY MAH HEART WAS IN ALL THE PAIN. Especially the first time I read the story. I hated that scene. I was so upset and Big Ears speech????? Ugh killed me slowly. Not to mention Doris sacrificed herself as well and that’s just not cool.
BUT ALSO immediately after this scene???? The first time we see the f*cking BEST TEAM UP POTENTIAL THAT IS STRETCH AND POOH BEAR ACTING IN UNISON WITH THE SOLE MOTIVATION TO SAVE LILY. HOLY HELL THAT WAS GORGEOUS. I WAS LIKE HELL YEAH THESE ARE MAH BOIS AND THEY ARENT GONNA LET ANYTHING HAPPEN TO THEIR BEST GIRL. STRETCH IS A GOOD BOI STOP WITH THE SUSPICIOUSNESS
And then. Speaking of Stretch. Best boi Stretch. The goodest boi Stretch. Stretch whose loyalty has been questioned all throughout the book. Who was swept away in surprise when his commander appeared to take over the mission and cast him as the traitor of the team. Who had trained and ate and hung out with the team, maybe not for the whole ten years, but for three years, which is still a long time. Stretch who didnt respond to his commander when he congratulated him on his “hard work” or when Pooh Bear called him out for his “treachery”, but couldn’t bear to see Lily disappointed in him and when asked “why?” by her ONLY THEN tried to defend himself. STRETCH MADE HIS DECISION.
He could’ve made it out of the sand trap. Left Lily for dead. But no. He went back. He went back, lifted Lily out of the sand that had been about to take her under, climbed the lion statue, lifted her onto her shoulders and told her to stretch as far as she could above the sand. And ya know goodest boi Stretch made sure she was secure before he even considered himself. While the sand was friggen filling up and having to balance carefully so Lily in her ballerina toe pose wouldn’t fall, had to disassemble his rifle and stick the barrel up as far as he could to use as a snorkel. And then????? He just had to close his eyes and plug his nose as the sand literally swallowed him up.
They talk about a claustrophobic tunnel earlier in this same chapter. Stretch. Bestest boi Stretch. He had to stand completely submerged in that oppressive wall of sand and not panic out of his friggen mind. Because he had to survive. Not just for himself. But for Lily. Lily who was currently standing on his shoulders, gasping for breath at the very top of the cage.
He doesn’t know if the others had disabled the reset mechanism or the trap would reset at all. All he knows is he’s gotta give Lily a chance. And even if they do make it out and the trap drains of the sand??? Who knows which enemies are waiting for them (and they end up captured by the American team), so he’s gotta be there to protect her!
Stretch is best goodest boi.
There are more scenes and this isn’t even talking about the rest of the team!!! but I just read this part and had to share it. Need more JWJr and Matthew Reilly love!!!
sir if this is the case then please explain why jack west’s hair colour has changed like three times
Oi, you mob, Matthew Reilly fandom! How about we start a Fanwork Fridays + Weekends event?
Once a week, we all search for a fanwork we like, new or old it doesn’t matter, and we reblog or review or comment on it and post two sentences what we like about said work, even if one sentence is quoting a line. I kid you not, all this homophobic bullshit has been one person’s piss poor hellish attempt to get fandom visibly showing some love to our fanwork creators. Please guys, can you at least help a sister out and put some good vibes out there tomorrow or over the weekend because there aren’t enough. There’s so much damn negativity in the air today, could we at least get rid of it and show the love? Private messages are great, but they don’t openly show anyone we care about fandom and the people who are in it. I am on my knees begging you guys to show some love. There’s Meenjan, Mythaelogy, BlackHunter666, ByTheLightOfAThousandSuns, EbonyAndUnicorn, Ayasmert, BookofMac, Phiyazzi, GreatZooofReilly (sorry mate, I forgot your AO3 name), there’s SO MUCH fanwork out there, even on Livejournal and DeviantArt, and Dreamwidth! There’s so much beautiful fanart here on Tumblr alone with so few notes. Just TWO sentences is all I’m asking. I’ll be doing it too, I know Ayasmert’s onboard too, so can we bring the love and not turn into a Black Eyed Peas song? If any of my followers can reblog this, please do. Matthew Reilly fandom is a tiny fandom based around a bunch of crazy multicultural Indiana Jones style adventurers, and insane US Marines, who regularly save the world. We’ve got giant panthers, crazy polar bears, a Brown girl who can read an ancient language called Thoth — and without that girl, the world would stop turning. Matthew Reilly is an Australian author who’s been around for 20 years, his books are like reading action movies — I’m not kidding, one Marine sits in a supersonic jet trying to crack a code to stop a nuclear missile, another has her leg bitten off by a killer orca and proceeds to shoot said orca in the head — and they’re great fun. Matthew Reilly fandom, I know you’re out there, so please bring the love, erase the hate, and make Fox, Zoe, and Lily, proud!
“No one said anything about hugs!”
Easter weekend is dragging on and studying hasn’t been overly appealing. So have some very confused hugs.
Pls forgive the fact that I still can’t draw hands. The science of them continues to allude me.
STILL ON PATROL
I learned something new and horrifying today which is… that… no submarine is ever considered “lost” … there is apparently a tradition in the U.S. Navy that no submarine is ever lost. Those that go to sea and do not return are considered to be “still on patrol.”
?????
There is a monument about this along a canal near here its… the worst thing I have ever seen. it says “STILL ON PATROL” in huge letters and then goes on to specify exactly how many WWII submarine ghosts are STILL OUT THERE, ON PATROL (it is almost 2000 WWII submarine ghosts, ftr). Here is the text from it:
“U.S. Navy Submarines paid heavily for their success in WWII. A total of 374 officers and 3131 men are still on board these 52 U.S. submarines still on patrol.”
THANKS A LOT, U.S. NAVY, FOR HAVING THIS TOTALLY NORMAL AND NOT AT ALL HORRIFYING TRADITION, AND TELLING ALL OF US ABOUT IT. THANKS. THANK YOU
anyway now my mother and I cannot stop saying STILL ON PATROL to each other in ominous tones of voice
There’s definitely something ominous about that—the implication that, one day, they will return from patrol.
Actually, it’s rather sweet. I don’t know if this is common across the board, but my dad’s friend is a radio op for subs launched off the east coast, and he always is excited for Christmas, because they go through the list of SoP subs and hail them, wishing them a merry Christmas and telling them they’re remembered.
Imagine a country whose seamen never die, and whose submarines can’t be destroyed…because no ones sure if they exist or not.
No but imagine. It’s Christmas. A black, rotting corridor in a forgotten submarine. The sound of dripping water echoes coldly through the hull. You can’t see very far down the corridor but then, a man appears, he’s running, in a panic, but his footsteps make no noise. The spectral seaman dashes around the corner and slips through a rusty wall. He finds himself at the back of a crowd of his cadaverous crew-mates. They part to let him through. He feels the weight of their hollow gaze as he reaches the coms station. Even after all these years a sickly green light glistens in the dark. The captain’s skeleton lays a sharp hand on his shoulder and nods at him encouragingly, the light sliding over the bones of his skull. The ghost of the seaman steadies himself and slips his fingers into the dials of the radio, possessing it. It wails and screeches. A bombardment of static. And then silence. The deathly crew mates look at each other with worry, with sadness; could this be the year where there is no voice in the dark? No memory of home? The phantasm of the sailor pushes his hand deeper into the workings of the radio, the signal clears, and then a strong voice, distant with the static but warm and kind, echoes from the darkness; “Merry Christmas boys, we’re all thinking of you here at home, have a good one.” A sepulchral tear wafts it’s way down the seaman’s face. The bony captain embraces him. The crew grin through rotten jaws, laughing silently in their joy. They haven’t forgotten us. They haven’t forgotten.
I am completely on board with this. It’s not horrifying, it’s heartwarming.
Personal story time: whenever I go to Field Museum’s Egypt exhibit, I stop by the plaque at the entrance to the underground rooms. It has an English translation of a prayer to feed the dead, and a list of all the names they know of the mummies on display there. I always recite the prayer and read aloud the list of names. They wanted to live forever, to always have their souls fed and their names spoken. How would they feel about being behind glass, among strangers? Every little thing you can do to give respect for the dead is warranted.
I love the idea of lost subs still being on patrol. Though if you really want something ominous, let me say that the superstitious part of me wonders: why are they still on patrol? If they haven’t been found, do they not consider their mission completed? What is it out there that they are protecting us from?
@boromir-queries-sean
There’s been something in the water since we first learned to float on it. Not marine life, although there’s more of that than we’ll ever know. Not rocks and currents and sand bars and icebergs either, although they’ve all taken more than their share of human life.
But something deeper. Something Other. Something not natural.
Sailors have always been superstitious.
Not one of them described it right.
You don’t hear about it so much now that we don’t lose ships anymore, really, not like we did at the height of the sea trade when barely an inch of ocean floor didn’t bear some wreck or other. And better ships and GPS and weather satellites have all played their part in that.
But we have protection now that we didn’t before. They don’t interfere with war and battle, even on behalf of what used to be their country, or with rocks and weather and human stupidity. Those are concerns for the living.
But the Other Things, the Things that shouldn’t be there - They can’t get to us now without a fight. It’s a fight They haven’t won in a very long time.
As long as we remember them, as long as we call out to them - not very often, just once a year will do - they will keep protecting us from the Things that go bump in the deep.
More than fifty submarines, Still On Patrol.
I love everything about this, but it’s the last bit that made me say “okay now I’ll reblog it.”
our dude just submitted his draft for the next jack west jr book . tell us the title already u coward !
She’s just a real powerhouse. She made me embarrassed to take my shirt off and I go to the gym 5 days a week. - Walton Goggins (on Alicia Vikander)

Jack is tired // inspired by this
yoooooo so thought I’d weigh in on this MR fandom positivity thing some people in the tag were talking about. dunno if the discord chat has been organising anything more specific but I’m not in it so I’m just gonna do my own thing
I don’t read MR fanfic so instead, a shoutout for my fave other fanwork: this wonderful Scarecrow fanmix by @mythaelogy! I really love the song choices in it, and the vibe it gives off, and basically everything about it lol.
there are only 2 MR related playlists on 8tracks so just putting it out there that if anyone has been sitting on one, not sure if they want to finish it, I would love to listen to it and I bet there are others in the fandom who would too!
“PUT THE FUCKING HELMET AWAY”
Just a little something to accompany this great post by a great peep
