The Rupert Brooke Monument on Skyros

The most visible memorial to this is in Skyros Town itself. High up above the sea, in Brooke Square, stands the “statue of the immortal poet,” pictured here. Funding for this came from a Belgian philanthropist, and an International Committee organised its unveilling in 1931. It was intended to be an allegorical figure rather than a true likeness to Brooke. The original model is believed to have been a young man selected in Athens by its sculptor, Michael Tombros.

WB Yeats called Brooke “the handsomest young man in England.” He died of sepsis in Greece in 1915, aged 27.

On this day, 19 July 1958, a key early successful sit-in protest of the US civil rights movement began in Wichita, Kansas. A group of Black students began to sit silently at the whites-only counter of the Dockum's Drug Store in protest at segregation. The aim was to prevent sales and so inflict enough economic damage that segregation was dropped. They faced repeated harassment by police and white racists, and they brought clubs, knives and a gun to protect themselves, although did not end up needing to use them. After 23 days, the owner caved in and desegregated his entire chain. While the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) did not initially support the sit-in, after the success in Wichita it adopted the tactic and it led to desegregation of lunch counters in multiple states. In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:

Taylor Farms Earthbound Farms Little Salad Bar (Aldi) Marketside (Walmart) Kroger House Brand Target private label greens Costco salads and greens etc Trader Joe's chopped salad kits and fresh produce Fast food: McDonalds, Taco Bell, (Yum! Brands), Chipotle, Subway, Pizza Hut, KFC, Olive Garden, Top Golf, Red Lobster, Burger King, etc.

This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.

We need a fully funded and staffed FDA, and regulations with teeth - and that's exactly what we don't have under Trump. To make things worse, the CDC is no longer tracking these outbreaks. We're on our own.
