This piece paints an effervescent pastoral scene, completely ignorant of its surroundings when it was written. Is it escapism? Is it fantasy? Is it not still worthy of artistic merit?
This sort of piece is still "new" (well, relatively and qualitatively speaking) - it still has the markings of contemporary classical music: a de-emphasis of orthodox tonality, non-standard rhythmic metre, complex layers of appreciation from an audience's point of view, etc etc etc. But several people I know would refrain from calling this music "contemporary" or "new" - and never the dreaded label of modern, out of fear that this could stigmatize the music before it is even heard. This is just music. Good music, nice music. A subterfuge with the aim of acclimatizing virgin and prejudiced ears....
Then again, that's the point of music, isn't it? To be enjoyed, and if it is, it's good.
