While I was not just on placement, I have experience with literacy learning in my previous placements. One particular example that has stuck with me was when teaching literacy groups. At University they tell us to try and steer clear of grouping students into groups based on academic levels, but this class had done just that.
It might not work for every classroom, but this class were so comfortable with each other that everybody loved their groups and during literacy time, they were better behaved than they were at any other time of the week. This allowed the teacher to work with the students in small groups and trust that others were doing what they were meant to.
During this literacy time, there were 5 different groups, each group would be given an activity, whether that is working on their spelling words, completing a worksheet etc. The last group would be on the floor working with the teacher reading and exploring different books. One book that a group was reading that I enjoyed working with the students for was a book about fossils. The students were all amazed at the different facts in the book and we ended up taking double the time to go through the book because they were all learning so much. When students are interested in what they are reading, their ability to learn and comprehend the stories greatly improve.
