Questo Ăš stato il primo Natale che ho passato da solo. Non so perchĂ© io lo stia scrivendo, nĂ© tantomeno perchĂ© io lo stia scrivendo qua, e non magari su un foglio tra i molti che ho sulla scrivania. Ci sono piĂč di 9000 km di distanza tra me e quella che potrei chiamare casa mia e 9 ore di differenza tra me e la mia famiglia ed i miei amici. Prima di partire, credevo che sarebbe stato piĂč arduo rimanere in contatto con tutti, coi miei amici in Italia, coi miei compagni di classe in Scozia, con mia nonna, alla quale insegnai ad usare skype due giorni prima di lasciare lâItalia. Durante il periodo di esami qua in Canada, che inizia i primi di settembre e termina dieci giorni prima di Natale, temevo che avrei sofferto un poâ la solitudine. Temevo che mi sarei alzato la mattina di Natale e sarei stato investito da tutti i ricordi felici. Come quando mi alzavo presto presto la mattina, accendevo la lampada sul mio comodino con gli orsetti e la luce soffusa mi accompagnava nella lettura di poche pagine di Harry Potter o chissĂ che. Non prestavo molta attenzione a quelle pagine la mattina di Natale. Me ne stavo in silenzio, tarpando il mio respiro ed esortando il mio gatto a frenare le roboanti fusa. Attendevo. Attendevo il suono, o meglio, il segnale che avrebbe dato inizio al Natale. Uno sbadiglio, un fruscio delle coperte nella stanza dei miei, la sveglia impostata sul cellulare di mio padre o semplicemente mia mamma che chiama il mio nome. Le parole sulla pagina scorrono sotto i miei occhi ma non approdano alla mia attenzione, le pagine sfrigolano sotto le mie dita quasi fossero infastidite dallâessere ignorate. Il tempo passa ed il segnale non arriva. Lâattesa stavolta, al contrario di molte altre attese, non ha teleologia ma gode di unâintrinseca beltĂ . Un ribollente gioia, piĂč che una crescente ansia. Il segnale arriverĂ , ma se non arrivasse rimarrei in questo limbo gioioso per sempre. In quegli attimi, entrambe le possibilitĂ paiono radiose. La luce del sole inizia a filtrare dalle finestre e le voci dei vicini, lâabbaiare dei cani in giardino, riemergono per donare un tono domestico, quotidiano, allâattesa. Tutta quanta lâatmosfera magica rincasa in una dimensiona addomesticata, ordinaria. Ed Ăš proprio allo scoccare di questo ritorno che il segnale giunge dalla stanza accanto, dalla stanza dei mei genitori. Le coperte si scostano quasi da sole ed i miei piedi filano sul parquet infreddolito. Mio fratello affiora dalle lenzuola del suo letto, anche lui ha atteso per tutto questo tempo abbozzolato e silente. Entrambi capitomboliamo sul letto dei miei tra grida di gioia che ormai non credo di ricordare che suono abbiano. Preferisco fermarmi qua. Ci tengo a precisare che per quanto malinconico possa sembrar questo racconto, in realtĂ questo Natale Ăš stato un Natale decente, migliore di quanto avrei sperato un paio di settimane fa. La malinconia non riaffiora dal comparare la mia situazione attuale con quella della mia infanzia, piuttosto sgorga dalla consapevolezza che la gioia dei natali che furono appartiene alla memoria e non piĂč al mondo che ci si para davanti. Ma in fondo, va bene cosĂŹ.
Auguri a tutti quanti quelli che non mi seguono e non leggeranno queste righe, da me, dal Canada.

Transparent - may indicate over-hydration, can dilute essential salts, such as electrolytes, creating a problematic chemical imbalance in the blood (fine if not all the time). Â
Pale straw - colour - normal, healthy, well-hydrated.
Transparent yellow - Normal.
Dark yellow - mild dehydration.
Amber or honey - Possibly dehydrated
Light orange - Possibly dehydrated, may also be caused by liver or bile duct problems, consumed food dyes or the excretion of excess B vitamins from bloodstream.
Orange - Some medications, such as rifampin or phenazopyridine
Dark orange or brown - A possible symptom of jaundice, rhabdomyolysis or Gilbertâs syndrome . Also caused by severe dehydration.
Pink - eating beets, blueberries or rhubarb can do this. A pinkish hue might be a first indicator of blood
Red - Blood in the urine, haematuria , can be benign, idiopathic or a sign of a kidney stone, infection or tumour in the urinary tract, or many other pathologies - immediately consult a physician.
Green- Eating asparagus does this for some people, some medications and food too, but it can also signal a bacterial infection in the urinary tract.
Dark brown or black - Potential causes like copper or phenol poisoning or melanoma, which can result in blackish urine called melanuria.
White or milky - This may be caused by an overabundance of certain minerals, such as calcium or phosphate, a urinary tract infection or excessive proteins.
Note: cloudy urine in women can just be vaginal mucus

This video technique, mostly known in action and Syfy movies, has been applied for the first time to UW wildlife during the GOMBESSA IV Expedition. My team and I imagined and built « The Arch of Image », a semicircular rig of 32 synchronized GoPro cameras. The goal of a « bullet time shot » is to freeze the image and turn around the frozen scene. Many species of kelp change their blade shape depending on the current they experience. In fast-moving waters, the kelp grows flat blades, but when the water around them is slower, the same plant will grow ruffled edges on its blades. In a slow current, the ruffled versionâs extra drag causes it to flutter up and down with a large amplitude. That helps spread the blades out to catch more sunlight and increase photosynthesis, but it comes at the cost of higher drag, which could tear the plant from its holdfast.
In contrast, the flat-bladed kelp collapses into a more hydrodynamic shape. This clumps the flat blades together, making photosynthesis harder, but it streamlines the kelp, making it easier to resist getting ripped out by fast-moving tides. (Image credit: J. Oxytocin strengthens mothersâ neural responses to infant and adult faces
In a new study from the University of Tampere in Finland, nasally administered oxytocin spray strengthened brain responses to pictures of infant and adult faces in mothers of 1-year-old infants.
Oxytocin is a hormone and a neuropeptide that has an important role in inducing labor, lactation, and caregiving behaviors in mammals. The influence of oxytocin on the perception of faces, emotions, and other social information has been widely studied in recent years by administering oxytocin with a nasal spray. Studies have shown, for example, that intranasal oxytocin administration may increase emotion recognition and brain activity during face perception.
Oxytocin appears to have an important role in processing social information and maintaining social bonds. Â Considering that some researchers have even suggested that in the future oxytocin might be used to overcome problems in early parent-infant interaction, there have been surprisingly few studies that test the effects of intranasal oxytocin in mothers of young children.
The new study investigated whether oxytocin nasal spray has an effect on the neural responses to faces in mothers of 1-year-old infants. Given the role of oxytocin in early caregiving behaviors, the specific goal of the study was to explore whether the effects of oxytocin are more pronounced in response to infant faces. Brain responses were measured with electroencephalography (EEG) which provides information on the early stages of visual perception.
The participants were 52 Finnish mothers of 1-year-old infants. During two laboratory visits, the researchers used EEG to measure the mothersâ neural responses to infant and adult faces. Before each measurement, the mothers were administered either a placebo or an oxytocin nasal spray. A double-blind study design was used so that neither the mothers nor the researchers knew which spray was administered.
The analysis showed that oxytocin increased the so-called N170 component of the EEG signal in response to infant and adult faces. The N170 component reflects activation of brain areas sensitive to faces, indicating that faces activated these areas more strongly after being administered oxytocin. The results did not clearly show whether the effects of oxytocin were larger in response to infant faces than to adult faces.
âThe main contribution of this study was to expand experimental oxytocin research to the mothers of young children who have rarely been included in this type of studies,â says Academy Research Fellow Mikko Peltola from the University of Tampere.
âIn the future, it will be important to conduct research with larger samples in order to determine whether oxytocin specifically affects sensitivity to infant signals because that is one of the key aspects of parenting,â says Professor Kaija Puura from the University of Tampere and Tampere University Hospital.
The results were published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.
