The Severed Head of Medusa The head of this Gorgon is carved entirely in verdant malachite, a proto historic copper ore that omits poisonous wing dust during carving. Fourteen of the world's most venomous snakes- rendered in exquisite detail crown the Gorgon's petrified features. The African rock python, horned viper and coral snake are all represented. American painter Robert Rauschenberg was born on this day 92 years ago. Rauschenberg, who passed away in 2008, is often thought of as a Neo-Dadaist and a forerunner to the Pop Art movement. When working with untraditional materials, he referred to his painting assemblages as “combines.”
