Searching for work experience...

I am hoping to get some work experience in graphic design agency, so I have been researching companies in my local area... Here is the email that I have sent:

I am a third year Contemporary Art student studying at the University of Huddersfield.

Digital artwork has been the main focus of my degree and as I am approaching the end of my studies I would appreciate the opportunity to do work experience in your company. As a highly creative individual I would like to experience what working for a business like .......... involves.

I also thought it would be worth creating a map for this exhibition, so that guests who have not visited the university before will be able to look at this map and see that there are other rooms open, so no work will be accidently missed. This is what I have created so far, it may have to change if people change rooms.

I havent really used inDesign a lot before, but I have certainly developed my skills in this area from putting together the catalogue. Thankfully Lia started off the process, placing in the basics such as a few statements and photo's. I then took over placing in the rest as they slowly but surely came in. I decided the catalogue would look more contemporary is the images filled the page, rather than in small boxes, after trying this out I was conviced this was the way forward. I have just finished putting the catalogue together with the rest of the things that have come in and is ready to be proof checked and printed. I spent quite a lot of time on this but I felt it was well worth the time, as it looks very effective and advertises the artists on my course very well, as well as giving me experience that I need if I decide I do want to pursue a career in graphic design.

These are the Catalogue/poster covers that we created. I suggested it would be a good idea to create a abstract pattern from the logo itself, Lia and I went away and designed our own versions to be selected, the first 2 are Lia's and the 2nd are mine.

After printing them out, Lia's was selected by the group to be used for the catalogue/posters.

The first four images are the logo's I submitted to be used for the catalogue, leaving the group to shortlist their favourites. The next 3 are the logo's that got short listed, this first desgined by Lia Hayes, the second by Katie Stanton and third by me.

We eventually decided as a group that the 3rd one that I designed worked the best, so this is what we used.

What you cant wear, not aloud to wear buoyant, or retain heat, such as wet suites, or aid speed such as flippers, she created a piece where she wore everything your not aloud to wear.

People didn’t understand piece, thought it was an advertisement for the things she wore.

She said that she wanted to swim channel like that, which caused upset as people saw it as cheating, but she wanted to do it as an artist rather than a athlete.

Huddersfield Art Society Presentation - Hamer Award

I was invited to the Huddersfield Art Society's meeting at the weekend in order to do a short presentation about my work. I prepared a 10 slide presentation about the build up of work I had done to create the piece which was presented in the gallery as well as the piece itself and what work I had done after. Overall I think it went quite well as it introduced the society to a type of art that they may not have seen before, as they are more traditional forms of artists such as painters. They were a very pleasant audience, a pleasure to present to, giving me some feedback and asking questions. It was a very positive experience.

Professor Alex Coles Lecture

One of the universities new professors, he is an Art and Design Critic who focuses on Art design and architecture. He has published 6 books Embarked on series of books on trans-disciplinary studio.

Did a BA in fine arts, moved towards writing, as it is a form of practise in its own right, then looked at more Intellectual studies throughout 90’s completing a PHD. People who write about art have no impact on practitioners or business of art. Write in a way to interest practitioners to have impact, or relevance

Had to go back to school to learn how to communicate, started to write for papers such as the daily times. Lots of Artists that are writers, such as Duchamp

Design art 2005 looked at Jorge Pardo, artist making art, manipulating design and architecture in art context. Producing a contemporary formalism, Sold 15,000 copies. Design and art fairs in London started to emerge

Kept repeating the same idea for years, decided to get close to practitioners again, spent a few months at a time in artist studios, Berlin, LA etc,

By watching and talking to artist he produced a type of writing that was like a short story, talking about the atmosphere and process. What we see in galleries in fabricated, spending time in studios gave insight to most people wouldn’t have, as you get to see work in process rather than the experience of seeing the final piece in gallery

Jorge - Gallery exhibitions, site specific projects. He decided to build is own house in LA. Doesn’t have a history of art, but has a very important architecture history, architects creating glass buildings etc… Built the house with the money from the show and self-funding. Bussed people over to have a look at his house, it was criticised at the time, how could it be an artwork? Now it is accepted. In 2006 he got commissioned to create buildings, started produce buildings and the things to go in them including furniture and lighting. Did a building in Yukhan jungle, Mexico, using local designers and crafts people, built by hands and no cranes.

All built on a ruin of a hacienda. Type of work that you can appreciate, and admire, only comes alive when people are using the space, when seminars take place. When you take the dynamic out, the work is just decorative and flat. Relational aesthetics, work that is completed by the viewer, for example cooking for people. Dialogue that the work triggers.

MA's!!

It was recommended by Jill to look into doing an MA in marketing, I have had a look and found MA Advertising and Marketing at The University of Leeds. I believe it may be worth applying for as another option to decifer closer to the time. I have started the application process, but need to start writing a statement. I went to careers services for advice, I was pleased when they said that the careers person was available, so didn't need to book an appointment. They gave me a leaflet and advice of what I need to put into the statement...

-Why I want to do the course / why me?

-What inspired me to apply for the course

-Relevant experience -get experience if possible

-Career aim overall

-Talk about tutors at the university, making you want to apply

So I will now begin writing the statement but also ask around for possibilities to get a bit of experience... I think I may start at asking work, if they have any contacts...

After Lisa's lecture I decided to 'Google' mself to see how my online reputation looks to those wanting find out more about me. In terms of my own name, nothing came up, which I was glad about, as there are just some people out there that you don't want to give access to your images! When I googled my artist alterego name 'jadarcombie' (a mixture of my name and the brand Abercrombie) quite a lot came up. This shows I have a good online portfolio of my work.

Interviews!!

Over the last week I have had two job interviews for graduate schemes. The first was an interview in Bradford for a company who manages the packaging for large businesses such as Morisons, Asda, Sainsburrys etc... The job would entail me learning how to communicate and deal with these customers so I will eventually be able to manage my own project. The second was a phone interview with a rental car company, for a graduate management scheme. This would involve me learning to manage the business as well as meeting sales targets, and other duties so I will eventually be a trained manager. I have applied for one more job, which is marketing graduate scheme for the company I already work for, I am hopeful of hearing something back from these as marketing would be my ideal job but also because I am already passionate about the buisness.
