every single time i listen to goodbye my friend from the phm soundtrack there's a part of me that imagines how awful it would have been if it HAD been goodbye.

if there was no taumoeba leak, and rocky went back to erid safely on the blip-a, and grace made it back to earth, and they never saw each other again.

maybe grace would have been happy on earth. he wouldve been the only surviving hero of the hail mary. probably end up with a certain degree of celebrity, which he would have hated.

maybe he forgave stratt in the end; i feel like he did. but i also feel like it was easier to forgive her bc he never had to see her again. being on the same planet as the person who took away his choice might feel like sandpaper.

coming back to a world where everyone he knew is 26 years older than he is would have that fish out of water feeling. he'd never really fit anymore, not the way he did when he was a teacher.

i cannot imagine that grace wouldn't have a hole in him for the rest of his life if he had gone back to earth.

in the end, never going back to the planet he was born on, and getting to live out the rest of his life with the best friend he loves, is the best ending he could have had.

I desperately want to see book hiccup and movie hiccup in each other's stories. Because theyre so similar but they have such wildly different strengths and truly I think it would be amazing

Book Hiccup is a great hero because of his EMPATHY. No matter what, he is always kind. He learns the language of the dragons. He takes time to befriend the microdragons, and they save his ass. He stops to help dragons out of traps. He treats this tiny little runt of a dragon like an actual person, and the little thing literally takes a MISSILE to the FUCKING CHEST for him.

Movie Hiccup's greatest strength is his CURIOUSITY. He approaches thing scientifically. While he is incredibly empathetic in the same way that book hiccup is still incredibly curious, he is motivated by exploration and a desire to understand. It's what helps him tame Toothless, then teach the other dragon riders. Exploration is what helps him do and be.

Movie Hiccup would have discovered the prophecy and gathered all the items to become king in record time, simply because he wanted to know what it would entail. Book Hiccup would have talked the Red Death off the ledge and promised to protect the nest. They would both kick ass in one another's stories, which is why I think it's amazing that they are each in the stories that they are.

Because in the books, we learn that there will always be cruelty, nad the best thing you can do is be kind.

And in the movies, we learn that there will always be those who are ignorant, and the best thing you can do it strive to understand.

Also kinda funny that book!hiccup is the one who values kindness despite killing dragons WAAAYY more frequently than movie!hiccup

I think that's actually really important because book!hiccup strives to be kind despite the cruelties he has seen and has had to commit.

Similarly,

Movie hiccup has remained curious despite the danger that curiousity puts him in.

He learned about dragons out of curiousity, not thinking of how dangerous dragons can be when you get too close.

Book!Hiccup learned about dragons out of compassion in wanting to learn about others, not thinking of how that would alienate him from his tribe further.

Movie hiccup is more proactive, making plans before bad things happen,

Book hiccup is more reactive, putting off thinking of bad things until their on top of him, this is honestly out of blind optimism.

WHICH IS ALSO UNTERESTING CUZ OF THEIR DYNAMIC WITH TOOTHLESS

in the movie, because hiccup makes plans ahead of time, he doesn't mind getting into trouble as much, and then toothless has to get him out of it.

In the books, Hiccup doesn't want anything to do with dangerous stuff, he is more of an avoider if there isnt a reason for him to do smthn so most of the time, its toothless getting to trouble and hiccup having to get him out of it.
