Dragos was trying very very hard not to laugh. "Hy ken´t beleeve hy vos EFFER so fuckink stupid, ken hyu beleev-Stop laffink!" Rada did no such thing. She did grab the bar to keep from falling off her chair. "Hyu iz cruel und heartless" Mina told her. Rada grinned at her, unrepentant. "Hy thought hyu knew dot dollink." Dragos burst out laughing. "Doze poor recruits." "Poor recruits? Hokeh dotz eet, hyu owe me a drink! Et least vun." For some reason, both her former COs found this highly amusing.

How Mina became a medic and got offered the jägerbräu. Here be gore!

Minas 15th birthday had been much anticipated. It meant she could finally apprentice as a medical minion. She was not trusted with any actual medical work at first, but she could watch, and wipe blood, and carry water. She could learn. Within a year she was allowed to do most non-surgical procedures, and considered old enough to be taken on campaign.

Mina was 16 years old when she met death for the first time. He stalked through the field hospital, reflected in eyes glazed from pain or fever. He was carried about as sickness and rot in the wounds. Many of her patients welcomed death, but Mina came to regard him as her enemy. She learned their names and held their hands until they were gone, because it was something that needed to be done, and then she went outside and cried, because that, too, was needed.

At the age of 18, Mina passed the examination and became a fully trained Medical minion. By now she knew it was better not to ask her patients names. better not to give a piece of herself away every time she failed and someone slipped away from her.

Some four years later she was leading a rescue party when the alarm bells sounded an new attack. Mina gave the order to retrieve the wounded and retreat to the city, but she knew they would never make it in time.

We are going to die. Mina thought through the pounding of her own heart. They are going to attack, and we will be here, Outside the strongest fortress in Europa, and we are going to die. Somehow, she found this highly amusing in the bleak sort of way a woman facing execution might be amused by the hangman's choice of necktie. It wasn't until she noticed her patients bug-eyed stares that she realized she was smiling serenely, a thin layer of humor over the panic boiling underneath.

She had just finished finished sewing up the man before her (a bullet wound, he would live) When the shot blew his head off, past saving even by the best of sparks.

Something cracked, struck a spark, and ignited. The pounding of her heart got louder and louder until it filled her entire world, louder than the doombell itself. How dare they come in here and hurt Her patients? Who did they think they were? Someone grabbed her and suddenly everything was bright and shining and simple.

My patients, My town, My duty. How Dare you try to harm those who are Mine!

Mina swung the scalpel she was holding without thinking. Killing was easy, it turned out. She could hear herself laughing through a mouth full of blood.

And then there were only dead bodies, and soldiers in heterodyne colors. Mina barely had the time to make sure the rest of her patients were alive before someone led her away, perhaps under the impression that she would faint. She didn´t. She just sat there, holding the glass of water spiked with vodka someone had handed her, staring at the dead. She had killed some of those men. Men who could have been her patients. She put down the cup and barely had enough time to find a reasonably secluded place before she was sick for the first time years. I am supposed to save lives, not end them. If I hadn´t killed them, they would have killed my patients. And my duty is to them. My patients, my town, my people. When the Heterodyne offered her the jägerbräu, she accepted.

A little out-take of Mina´s childhood, possibly part 1 of how she became a jäger.

Mina had always been light on her feet. Growing up in the castle meant being able to outrun it´s "jokes" was an important survival skill, even if it generally was not inclined to permanently harm her. Dead people are so much less amusing.

So she learned to jump just ahead of the steamcats if she didn't want to be picked up like a kitten and flung from one to the other until they lost her. It was fun, but rather got in the way of getting anything done.

Mina did not remember the first time she met a jäger. She had been quite small and was being carried about in a sling by one of the maids. One of the guards had made faces at her to make her giggle. A few years later, he was chasing her out of laboratories, the one part of the castle she was not allowed in, which in her opinion was quite unfair. How was she to learn how to be a minion if she couldn't watch the professionals at work?

In the meantime, the chatelain taught her how to read, so she stole any book that looked medical or useful and spent long evenings perched on the chandeliers in mortal combat with words like physiology and diaphragm. She was quite put out when she grew larger and had to move to the beams. On the other hand, growing meant finally being allowed to help the minions, even if she was still not allowed in the labs themselves.

Especially not after The Incident.

Mina had just been trying to get a better look at the experimental subject, it was so still she really should not be blamed for thinking it was dead! And it wasn't her fault it had grabbed her and she had to break some of it's fingers! The master could fix them, right? He hadn't even been upset.

Somehow, Mistress Mironescu was not impressed, and did her best to keep Mina too busy to get into more trouble. This resulted in Mina being bored out of her skull, and really not to blame for breaking things, knocking things over, and generally being useless at household tasks. It was not at all a way to avoid being asked to do them.

Cosmina: Uh huh. Der hair gotz shticky on eet´s own, of cawze

Mikhail: Verrry meesteerious

Mirrors: Der hairballs haff notink to do vit anytink.

Mikhail: Noppe

Cosmina: Ov cawze not.

Mikhail: Eurggh. -brandishes a helpful scalpel-

Cosmina: -takes scalpel away- "Put dot down before hyu hurt hyurself"

Mikhail: -deflates- "awwwwwwww"

Mirrors: "HY DUZZN'T NEED ENY SHARP TINK NEAR ME ENNYWAY"

Mikhail: -grins and slowly inspects claws-

Mirrors: -pouts- Dun be mean.

Mikhail: -flicks claws- Other sol-yu-shuns: Letz get drunk.

Mirrors: -perks up- Now DAT hy ken DO.

Cosmina: -facepalms- Vell dot should do der trick iffen ennyting does

Mikhail: -grins in a helpful manner-

Mirrors: -clutching at his stomach but speaking with enormous dignity- Don't know vat hyu're talkink about.

Cosmina: -gives Mirrors a Look- Either hyu throw op dot hairball vhen hyu´re drunk or hy Vill cut hyu open end get eet

Mirrors: -innocent face- Vot hairball?

Cosmina: Der vun dots mekink hyu look like hyu swallowed a live veasel

Mechanicsburg was frozen, the Heterodyne was lost, and Cosmina was falling apart. The caves were loud and chaotic, but eventually Mina found someone to report to and deposit the boys with while she went in search of the field hospital. From then it was better. Stitch, clean, bandage. There was more than enough work to keep her busy and her thoughts occupied. At least until Sarge Radovana turned up and demanded to know her status.

"Hy´m fine." She was, so long as she could keep working, and her voice only shook a very little bit.

“…Right. Hyu go on und get on vit it, hy iz chust looking for efferyvun und den hy schtop by again.”

The wounded kept coming, glassy eyes and badly concealed pain. She helped who she could but for some (too many) all she could do was take the pain away while they waited to die. She stitched and cleaned, set bones and bandaged limbs, but now the faces blurred and shifted, became Mikhail, Cezar, Iancu...Sarge. Mina shook her head. Sarge was fine, she had seen her! They were all fine. But how do you know? Maybe you're just seeing what you want to. Maybe you're stitching corpses like some broken clank that's outlived its use. Maybe you're the last one living. Mina did not notice she was whining under her breath, a small hurt sound like an injured animal.

"Hyu hokeh?" She turned and there was Iancu, a gaping hole in his chest, eyes blank. He was long dead and SOMEONE had revived his corpse to mock her. She howled and lunged for it.

Someone jumped her, they rolled. Mina growled and tried to dislodge whoever it was that had such a familiar scent... Mina blinked and stared into a familiar anglerfisch scowl. "Sarge? Hyu´re dead. Efferyvun iz dead."

There were voices, "Vot iz vrong vit her?" "Goddemmit ve ken´t afford to lose anodder medic, git hyuself together Mina!" and she heard Sarge growl at someone.

"Stop starink end go do sumtink useful, all ov hyu!"

Mina was not sure just how they got there but the room contained nothing but some dusty shelves, herself, and Sarge, (Or maybe just a comforting hallucination) who planted herself near the door. "Hy know hyu´re ded, but hy´m glad hyu´re here ennyvey." Mina tried to smile, though it felt horribly crooked. "Vould be chust like hyu to haunt me." She smelled real enough, mostly of cigars, and felt solid enough when Mina leaned against her. But the images refused to be banished.

“Hyu iz seeink ghosts, now? Lemme know if hyu ken see Anton, und tell heem hy tink he’s a rank bastard vit hiz head op hiz ass, vill hyu?"

Mina laughed into her shoulder. It felt as if she might fall apart if she moved to quickly. "Hokeh."

She was not sure how long they stayed like that, her face buried against her mentors neck, clinging to the fact that she was warm and real and not trapped under who knows what had covered Mechanicsburg, but eventually Mina remembered she should be at work, not feeling sorry for herself.

"Hy hed better get beck."

That got her a snort. "Not to der vounded."

"Ve need all der medics ve haf."

Rada gave such a look of exasperation Mina abruptly felt 20 years old and fresh off the Bräu again. "Right, ve need medics. Hyu cannot be one ov them, hyu´re a mess. Go make sum dem beds or count supplies or sometink."

"Hmpf." Mina glared at her, even if she couldn´t put much heat into it yet, but got up anyway. "Get sumtink to eet, vill hyu?"

"Ja, ja, tek care ov hyuself before huy lecture me. Now get out ov here."

"Ja Momma."

Rada snorted and cuffed her. "Move, hyu brat."

"Hy´m movink!" Mina scrambled to her feet. She still felt shaky but that was just too bad, she needed to check on the boys and there was plenty of work that needed doing. Falling apart would just have to wait.

Two Of Them

"VOT DER HELL DEED HYU TINK HYU VERE DOINK? VERE HYU EFFEN TINKING? IZ DERE ENNYTHINK BOT AIR EEN DOT LEEDLE HED OV HYURS? VERE HYU TRYINK TO GET HYUSELF KEELED?"

Dragos would not have been surprised if the shout had made dust come off the rafters. It had only been a skirmish, just right for new jägers to cut their fangs on, but evidently one of Radas recruits had still managed to get themselves nearly killed. "Evenink Ra-" He turned to greet her but it was Mina who came towards him, carrying a recruit with a good deal of his leg missing.

Rada herself was holding up a wall outside and smoking. She grinned at him.

Mina proceeded to administer medical attention while lecturing her patient at a volume probably heard back in Castle Heterodyne.

"Oh god, dere´s two ov hyu now."

Merin dreams

Merin is mine.

Sometimes he dreams. Sometimes he dreams in sharp, cutting colours and bright-edged focus, seeing the roots of the world  and how they can be tugged and broken and changed to be better, more efficient, more useful, more powerful. In his dreams his mind dances and swirls with possibilities, so many possibilities, so- so much vagueness, nothing holding firm, ideas slipping away as he grabs for them, the details gone as soon as he looks too hard, this isn't right, he knows how this should go, he's a Spark- He is not a Spark. The recognition intrudes into the dreaming and brings with it the memory of pain, pain that turns up the brightness to searing and the focus to nails against his skull and transforms the dancing possibilities into screaming faces, begging, all at once, make me, make me, make me make me make memakememakemeMAKEME- -and then different pain, pain of the body and not the mind, pain far worse, if he knew he was dying before then he is certain of it now, but the colours are no longer burning and the focus is no longer stabbing and the ideas are fading, one by one, that's okay, maybe the best ones can stay, they'll distract him from the pain... ...They are not staying. They fade, more and more, faster, and the colours fade and the focus fades and the pain is worse it feels as though he is being turned inside out but he cannot gather strength to fight it, thoughts to question it, there is nothing to do except to ride it- He wakes up. He wakes up just as he did so many years ago, bolt upright, breath a rasp in his chest, soaked with sweat, disorientated and furious. He wants to kill something. He wants to kill something now. He flexes claws, baring sharp, triangular teeth... and pauses. This is not years ago. This is now. The primal rage of a newly created Jaeger no longer flows through his veins, and nor does the divine inspiration of a Spark; he is far too old, now, for either. And there is nothing here to kill. Well. There is a lump under the blankets beside him, soft snoring indicating a life that could, indeed, be snuffed out. But it would not be easy or wise to attempt, and he has no intention of doing so. He lies down again, resigned. The body next to him is warm and invitingly furred. He ignores it, or tries to. His thoughts are pacing familiar ground. It is not fair. This is not how it is meant to be. He has been cheated... he feels the bitterness lodge in his belly, and sighs. He is too tired for this, but knows what will happen if he sleeps again. Next to him, the snoring cuts off briefly in favour of a grunt, a half-yawn and a shift in position, before resuming. He makes a face; his tail, previously arranged decorously between them, is now trapped beneath a leg. It is not painful, or even really uncomfortable, but he is not in the mood to allow it to pass. He elbows his bedmate in the nearest body part that does not sport spikes. “Dragos.” “Mmf...” “Dragos.” “Mp.” “Dragomir.” It is very hard to tell, in the dark, whether Dragos has actually opened his eyes; but the snoring has ceased, at least. There is a short pause. “Hyu are on my tail.” The pause extends, and then there is a snort. “Shot op, Merin,” says Dragos, and the amount of sleepy affection in his voice never ceases to send a jolt of shivering surprise through Merin's gut. It is enough of an antidote to the bitterness already there that he does not even object when an arm unfolds, wraps about him and draws him to press against a solid, furry chest. When he slides back into sleep, he does not dream.
